Converting 11 RGU Tour Pack to Detachable
« on: October 13, 2011, 11:11:48 AM »

First thing you got to do is replace the side fender covers, the stock ones
for the Ultra models won't work with any of the docking kits.

Once you do that the docking hardware mounts (4 point) to the bike easy.

I wanted to keep the Amp and not convert the entire system to aftermarket
but the problem is the detachable mount has no mounting provisions.

So I dropped the mount off to a friend with access to a good machine
shop.  marked the Mount where I'd like to have 2 studs up front
and made a plate from aluminum and marked it for studs.

The shop cut and pressed in low height hex studs 1/4 - 20 into the mount
and 2 into the aluminum plate.  They drilled two holes in the plate to
align with the rear tour pack mounting bolts.

You can see here where the studs show
and the plate in position before mounting.

Have you tried listening to the HK head unit through the speakers w/ the tour pak (and amp) off the bike?

I ask because I believe the HK sends an audio signal (front l/r) to the amp which then amplifies the signal and routes it to the front and rear speakers.  If the amp is disconnected, there is no speaker connection to the HK and there is no audio through the speakers.

In any case, very nice workmanship on making the amp detachable with the rack.

No sound without the Amp,

I just drop the amp in the saddle bag for now

I have the instructions for the HD amp you can buy
to put under the fairing, it shows the brackets
need to scan it and put here in PDF..

If I could get to see the mounts I could make one up
and move the amp into the fairing and just reverse the
cable, cut and tie wires into radio or get the harness
that comes with the amp kit.

Then you'd just pull tank, and remove the stock radio
harness and clean the thing up.

What a great project--fashion a bracket to reuse the OEM under tour pak amp.

If you do buy the harness included with the in-fairing amp kit HD now sells, it's likely you'll still need to make some wiring mods since the kit's harness uses the 6B audio connector and, while your bike has a 6B connector, it is much different (12 wire connector compared to 6 wire connector) than that used on non-CVO RG's.

Good luck with your project.

Probably just flip the stock harness and
customize it a bit

J&M Audio now has a kit to add their amp inside the front fairing.  Would this work as a replacement?  I see from their advertisement that you can add front lower fairing speakers as well.  Not sure what removing the tour pack speakers would do during times without them.  It would be a much more expensive option but if you're wanting to add the lower fairing speakers it might me another option.

I just finished replacing the amp with a biketronics amp and pulled all the factory wires. if you have ever done stereo wiring before and look at the wiring schematic its an easy and well worth the upgrade. I caution you to go a head and get some new speakers too cuz they aint gunna last with a good amp pushing them.

Where did you find room in the fairing for an amp? With our bikes there's the cb and xm module on top of the radio and the ipod module on the brake side tucked in between the glove box and inner fairing.

Ok glad to hear I wasn't the only one that noticed the lack of room under there hahaha. I used someone else's idea for a bracket. Don't remember if it was j&m or hogwired or one of the company's out there  but I just bent a flat piece of steel to match a cardboard template I made up. Then I mounted the amp to it. I wish I had measured a couple more times because I would have moved the amp over an inch or so as the headlight makes slight contact with the amp. No issues after a 1800 mile trip.
