No more Syn3 in the tranny for me
« on: June 26, 2004, 04:35:11 PM »

This was talked about in another thread (http://flhrsei.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=CVO_SITE;action=display;num=1078682876), but I thought I'd start a new one since it's a bit off-topic for that one.

Couldn't get the image of all the metal particles stuck to my bike's transmission drain plug out of my mind, so after 400 miles, I drained the Syn3 last night and switched to M1 75w-90.  Again there were metal particles attached to the drain plug.  Not as bad as the last time when the fluid had 1,800 miles, but still more than I ever remembered seeing on my '02 Electra Glide that I ran M1 in.

As The Ofender said about the Bel Ray lube he switched too, the tranmission is quieter and does not seem to change characteristics (noise, shift quality, etc.) as the lube gets hot like the Syn3 did.  I will not be going back to the Syn3 in the transmission.

103tHunDer,

I use to use the AMSOIL, gear lube in all my trannys. Now use Red Line HD Shockproof in the the transmission and Red Line MTL in the Primary, check out Harley Tech Talk, many posts regarding the non use of HD Syn3 in tranny.

I also tried Syn3 in the tranny.  Shifting was not as smooth and to much metal on the drain plug.  Drained and re-filled with Heavy Shockproof.  The world is once again good.

I also experienced slightly harder shifting with Syn 3 on my 03 SERK when I switch from the HD Trans lube.  While in Sturgis last year at the Rapid City Convension Center, I happened to meet a couple of the Harley Davidson engineers oil display.  (They were asking questions about the highest engine oil temp we had been seeing.)  I put my 2 cents worth in to them that I wasn't happy with the Syn 3 in the tranny and they indicated to me that this was the first complaint that they had ever heard.   [smiley=confused5.gif]  Maybe they need to log onto this site. I wasn't aware that there was anything else to put in the tranny except RedLine Shockproof!!!!
Seriously, that's all I have used. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

FYI Folks, Service is completed and Oil samples from all 3 holes are at the lab as we speak.  I will post results for all when I get them back.

Now running Syn3 in Engine and Standard HD Trans and Prim Lubes.

Couldn't find the Redline Shock proof localy or that would have been the tranny fluid of choice.

Now I'm ready for Sturgis!!! [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]
