Redline Heavy Shockproof
« on: October 17, 2006, 08:09:06 AM »

Just chenged trans fluid to Redline Heavy Shockproof>>> Wow, shifts nice and smooth,.goes into gear eaiser I noticed that right away...any reason NOT ot use this product in my "05???? When I changed the fluid I noticed some cuttings on the magnetic plug. I would of thought that at 15,000 there shouldn't have been any or very little. I'm curious to see what it looks like next change. Thanks Greg

No reason not to change to Redline HD Shockproof in your 05 Tranny, also look at putting Redline MTL in your primary.

Been using it for years.

I use either Redline HD Shockprook or the Amzoil Severe Gear in my tranny.  MUCH better than the Syn3 junk...

I'm the same as Geezer with the Shockproof and MTL..  Just monitor the shavings as you stated.  A few would probably be normal.

WalMart Super Center in the motorcycle/auto section or direct from Zippers.  Zippers usually is about .50 cheaper.

Not sure about price comparisons but Summit Racing is a RedLine vendor and of course they're huge and available everywhere at www.summitracing.com .

Another online resource for the Redline Products is CDOC. Luckily for me they are local and was the only place I found that had the Redline products I needed. I too am using the Heavy Duty Shockproof (Tranny) and MTL (Primary).

My HD dealer installs Redline in the trannys.

How do I put a quote in the reply.  Very frustrated.

Another  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] vote.  Been using Shockproof HD in four of our Harleys so far with really excellent results. Dealer here also offers it as alt to Syn3.

Exactly which products/viscosity from Redline do you guys recommend for tranny and primary?
I can get it locally at Autozone and Advance autopoart.  The Redline site has a dealer locator.  Wonderful place the Internet, thanks Al Gore!

You will want to get the following Redline products.....

Tranny - Redline Heavy Duty Shockproof.

Primary - Redline MTL

There is only one viscosity of those products so as long as you specifically ask and receive those you will have the right ones.

Question about Redline Shockproof....I had used Amsoil Gear Oil in the tranny of my SEEG '05 and this year I put in the Shockproof.  The past 2 months, when the bike/tranny is cold, and making a shift, the shifter doesn't want to return.  With the clutch in, I have to bring it back with my foot.  Or I can watch it slowly return to center so I can pull the next gear.  When hot, the shifter works like it always has.  I don't notice any differences.
The old shockproof had about 6 months/5,000 miles on it.  So I put in fresh, no change.

Any ideas?   [smiley=confused5.gif]

Almost sounds like it's too thick at colder temps. What is the ambient temp when it does this?

I live in Florida and the temps at startup don't vary from the morning or afternoon.  Same symptoms.  Coldest about 75, Warmest 95.  Thought about that when I was changing the oil on a Saturday morning, flowed right out and same consistency as the new bottle.

What it feels like is this:  I don't think it is a return spring issue, since it is fine hot.  It's almost like the shifter dogs/forks are not coming back from the shift.  Or like something sliding on a shaft isn't slick enough, maybe clogged by too thick oil??

I doubt it is the oil.  I run Redline Heavy Shockproof at temps below freezing.  Check your external linkage.

I have run the Shockproof down to 35 degrees with no problem.  Tallyclassic-spray some PB Blaster penetrating oil around the shifter shaft (behind the heel/toe shifter) where it goes thru the front primary cover.  Several years ago there used to be a grease fitting there.

I can only answer from about 50 miles with Mobil 1 in all three - its what dad used.  Then went to Redline in the Tranny and Primary, and the bike is smoother and shifts easier.  Still Mobil 1 in the motor.

I run something similar in the rear end of my F-150...with a MagTech cover, have not had a rear end failure towing WAY past the rated capacity for some of my pulls (don't ask).

Overall I like Redline products- I've used the 20-60 engine oil and HD SKHprf trans oil on several bikes, and even their syn diesel oil in my Cummins with very good results.

When I replaced the 5psd trans on my 06 FLHX with a Baker DD6, at the time of install Baker recommended using Redline HD shockproof so I found some and put it in- I had previously been running BelRay for 11,000 miles with no complaints. So Baker now recommends Amsoil instead of Redline. I asked, but couldnt get them to tell me why.  At the end of the day, Redline, Amsoil, BelRay are all very good oils, I think it gets down to personal preference.

I didnt like they way the Redline it behaved in my FLHX Baker DD6 trans, it just never felt like it shifted all that well. However, it works fine in my Softail, so the jury is out on better or worse shifting.

After 4,000 miles on the new DD6 trans, I replaced the Redline in my FLHX and went back to BelRay. When I drained the trans, for the hell of it I filtered the redline through a paint strainer- just to see what was suspended in the oil. Here is the gunk that was suspended in the oil-
