battery tender wire question
« on: November 10, 2015, 01:44:32 PM »

To make a long story short I have no 12 volts on the tender pigtail. Does anyone know if there is a fuse for it. I can find it and I don't have a wiring diagram.

There is an inline fuse. it connects directly to the battery

All the tender harnesses I have seen have an inline fuse holder built in with a cover. I think they use a 3 amp fuse if I remember correctly. Should be relatively close to where it hooks to the battery.

I could not find one. The battery has only two wires a positive  and a negative I could not see a fuse. It seems to be built right in. 2014 limited.

It's best when asking these kinds of questions to mention up front what model and year bike you're talking about.

For 2014 Harley made the battery tender harness and connector part of the factory wiring harness, so there is no longer a separate connection to the battery posts and no longer an inline fuse (7.5 amp) like the dealer or customer installed versions for 2013 and prior models.

I am not 100% certain on this, but I believe the pigtail runs through the P&A circuit, and the fuse is located in the bikes fuse panel.

Should have asked the year......On the 14's its part of the wiring harness, not an add on. It is fused in the fuse block, 20 amp P&A Acc Fuse

Does the outlet you plugged the tender have power?
Is the power light on the tender on?
Check the leads from the tender with a voltage meter and see if you have power.
All answers are no, the outlet has no power. reset the breaker or replace the outlet.
If the first two answers are yes and the third is no, then buy a new battery tender.

I put a test light on the bike tender pig tail and no power.

Sorry guys that was defiantly stupid off me to not give the year. Thanx very much for the input. I will check that. I think I am having battery problems I came back from a ride and the bike was shut off with the lights on for about 2 minutes. I then tried to start it and it cranked a couple of times and that was it. So like a dummy I used a battery I had with another tender cable that was clipped to it and plugged it in to the bike tender cable. Well that just created lots of sparks because of the wrong polarity. I should have switch the clips on the battery. So I guess I burnt the fuse. I will check that fuse. ............ I should have known better.

Got rid of all 6 of my Battery Tenders after reading some horror stories about them I replaced them with the Noco Genius GT750  have had them about a year with no battery problems...   I was getting heat from the batteries when using the Tender and spoke with a indy repair shop and he advised me to get rid of them after reading some online articles  I changed to the Noco...

Never heard of that either nor had any heat generated when used on AGM batteries. I do know that if you are using wet cell batteries (those that you have to add water to/not sealed) they will be some heat generated in them. Found that out the hard way on my previous H-D... I purchased a wet cell Die-Hard battery and found it would boil over when hooked up to the battery tender.
