2009 Model Year Changes
« on: October 10, 2008, 04:35:50 PM »

After getting a tip from a friend that there was a 2009 Yellow SERG at BIGG's H-D in San Marcos, I rode up there this morning to check it out. Too bad for me, it was still being set up and the closest I got was a look through the window between the shop and the customer lounge. There were several standard model 09's parked by the front door, so I took a seat on a bench beside a new Street Glide. The most obvious change of course is the exhaust system. Beyond that, the new swingarm stands out as does the added stabilizer link on the top front of the motor. That actually looks a but ugly to me. Not sure what might make it look better, but the attachment point doesn't strike me as very well thought out asthetically. While looking at that, I was asking myself why it looked so different and realized the coil wasn't above the front cylinder any more, so I went looking for the coil and found it above the starter tucked away in the V of the rubber mount frame. Not sure if that made it harder to get at or easier, although it would seem you'd need to remove the battery to get to the coil. Other visually noticeable changes include the lack of a rear frame loop over the fender and I believe all 09 models are running 180 rear tires. The bottom line is that for most of us, our parts stash is totally useless for this new model year. Way too many changes for all but the most common of doo dads to fit the new line-up. Anyway, please jump in and add to this post for anything I didn't mention here in way of changes.

I think that you pretty well nailed it down. I went to purchase some Magnum Sterling Chromite II ignition cables for the SERG and I had to remind the parts rep. at the dealership that the coil was in a different location. Had I not said anything, he would have ordered from the 08' parts list for this item. He called the manufacturer and found out that the parts are not available yet...so, again I'll have to wait.

Year to year change gets to be a pain.

I bought a 2008 FLHX to make a custom bagger out of and you had to make sure that any parts you bought from a dealer had the part number for a 08.
If not they would just order it for you and say "it fits all the other ones, did the 08 change?".

Than if you go to the aftermarket it gets to be a real mess. I bought the Corbin bag set for it and most of it did not fit, and their side covers are not even close. I have ABS and it was 2.75 out from the frame rail. I called Corbin and told them the problem and they said "it fits all the FLHX's" I asked them if they have built a 08 yet. They said no, it would be fine. I told them about the ABS and they said "gee we will look at that when we get a bike with ABS"
I cut the stock covers and made them work.

Bought PM floor boards and they fit, but their rear peddel did not. They said it fit! took them 14 weeks to put the right one in production.

Now with the 2009 all the more has changed.

For the trike kits, we bought a 09 to take apart and see what it is going to take. The whole back end has changed. We need to make a complet back "plug in" for the kit to work.

The after market is going to take a long time to get up to speed on this one.

look hard at the rear wheel, all the rubber cush drive in now inside the hub! Go try to buy some ones wheels that will work with that.

The 2009 list is long and will take a long time to get up to speed

Yes, I think they have a strategy to own the market.

They know how much they lose each year to the after market and they want it. Most of their price points are right on the after market.

You buy a 2009 and now want to make it "yours" and who has the parts that fit? Them. And what will "your" bike look like? Just like his and his and his.

Their are some of the larger after market that will make parts to fit, they will buy a 2009 and do it right, but you will not see it for how long, it takes time.

The cost of change by the after market is high, that will be added to the cost of the part. And how many years will the after market keep doing it?

And than some day most of the after market will be gone, and who you going buy parts from...........Them.

And we will be right back to.......they all look the same!

I hope it never happens

while i see your side of this debate...... are you suggesting that the MOCO should keep running the same frame forever because its better for the aftermarket? i would suspect that the MOCO will keep the current 2009 frame basically unchaged for the near term, they dont want the expense f new tooling every year any more then then aftermarket does

When it comes to performance parts Dean, I think H-D makes some good stuff. The trouble is they don't make everything you need. Exhaust for instance. While you can build a kick-ass 113 or buy a Jim's 120 or 131 from H-D, you can't buy an exhaust system worth a chit. I just don't get it. There's no way those big Jim's motors meet EPA standards, so what gives with H-D not offering a "race use only " exhaust system. And the same goes for gear driven cams. I can't come up with a plausible reason why H-D doesn't make a Screamin Eagle gear drive cam kit. Hell they sell race motors for the XL dirt trackers and the drag ready V-Rod. I agree with your post that they want to own the market, but they also have these weird gaps in their product line-up. Maybe you understand it, cause I sure don't. If I were the CEO of H-D, I'd manufacture and sell whatever my customer base was looking to buy. H-D Inc has one if not the most loyal customer base in the world and while they do exploit it, they also don't in many areas. Look at the new custom seat program. Softails only, like Bagger owners, Dyna owners etc wouldn't want a custom seat. And the deal with not offering a back fitting Brembo brake caliper when Brembo makes calipers that fit 07 and older H-D's. Like I said, if you can explain it, I'm all ears.
