I am looking for suggestions on the best sunglasses to use for blocking wind.  I ride a Street Glide so my face sees a good deal of wind - especially during freeway riding.  I have tried some different models but they all seem to start to "wobble" at one point or another.  I am sure that there must be something out there that I am missing.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!!

Oakley's Wind Jackets have been the best I have ever used. I have loved them since I got them but was reading a thread on this forum a couple of weeks ago and they said that by using a strap, it would cut down on "buffeting". It didn't make sense to me but I tried it yesterday and I'll be dam--d, it actually worked. Really love them now! I went with the Transitions lenses so I can wear them day or night. See below

I have enough sunglass's to set up a vendor's stand, Oakley's, Rayban, Wiley X and who knows what other brands, A couple years ago i bought a pair of Dewalt's saftey sunglass's from Lowe's, wrap a around, liked them so well went back and bought a pair of clear ones for night riding. They keep sunlight and wind out of my eyes, have had no problems with them at all. And i wear contacts.

Thank you all for your replies.  I have tried both wrap around glasses and glasses with foam inserts.  They work fine for riding around town but as soon as I get at or above 60 mph they start wobbling around in the wind and get a bit blurry.  The only thing I have not tried is a strap.  I was thinking that maybe I need a strap to hold them tight to my head so they don't move???

Agreed... Buffeting is the problem.  I am 5'11" and run a 7.5" H-D Wind Splitter.  I am hesitant to get a taller windshield because I am not a fan of the look.  That is why I am hoping to solve this with glasses.

Find some wrap around style glasses that fit your face/head and have them 'fitted' to you and you'll have no buffeting w/o a strap....you should be able to turn your head around while riding w/o the wind making the glasses loose on your face.  If they fit close enough to your face that no wind enters from the side, they'll stay put.  spyder

Sklywag is definitely onto something with the windshield question. I wear prescription glasses and have battled this for years. Bought some PanOptx (7 eye) glasses and that did the trick, mostly. Then ended up having my perscription along with transition lenses put in and thought I was in heaven. Then I heard about Freedom Shields windshield system from this site, no less, and installed an 8" dark smoke (I'm 6'2" I would recommend the 7" for your height, but check their website) and no more buffeting! Not even with my regular glasses at freeway speeds. Check them out.

Why don't passengers like the Klock Werks windshields?  I hate to keep going back to looks but the Klock Werks seems to look better to me than the Freedom Shield...

I think there are four good players to choose from:  Clearview; Freedom; Windvest; and Long Ride.  I have experience with Clearview w/recurve on my '06 SEUC (that was about the only one available back then) an it worked great.  I had a Windvest shield on my '06 SEVROD, and though a different product, the quality and function of the shield was excellent.  They all look a little different, and are cut slightly different.  Whichever one, the measuring part is the critical thing:  get you a ruler and masking tape it to the front of your current shield so that the measurements are facing you (most manufacturers measure from the top edge of the fairing, so let the ruler rest there when you tape it on)...sit on the bike in your "normal" riding position (slouching, sitting straight with good posture, etc.)  Then pick a point that is straight out from between your upper lip and nose where you can still see the ground about 50 feet in front of the bike.  That lets you see over the shield so it's not in your line of sight going down the road, but is high enough to throw the wind over your head.  Then pick whichever one most closely meets that measurement and that you like the looks of.  Just don't get a really dark tint...smoke is fine, but dark will not be good at night to see things immediately in front of the scoot.

That's my opinion/suggestion.  I think all of those vendors offer discounts to members here.

Why don't passengers like the Klock Werks windshields?  I hate to keep going back to looks but the Klock Werks seems to look better to me than the Freedom Shield...

What a couple friends have said is it seems like the side cuts direct air around the rider but right into the passenger.  Have a friend that switches back to freedom when his wife rides to correct it.

Always had wind buffeting on my old SG but I didn't know what it was  I just thought that what I felt was the result of riding a mc.  That changed when I got my new SG.  I didn't like the little stock shield that came with it so I ordered a 9" Freedom Shield.  After I put it on I realized that I was looking through it and not over it, but I was ok with this configuration and now I love it cause there is NO wind buffeting at all.   . I could ride 90 mph with a ballcap on and it would stay on my head, so YES wind buffeting is all about the height of your shield.

I use Spotter (Haze with Copper lens) perfect fit and best wrap around glasses I have had, on my Fatboy with no windshield no wind gets in my eyes and on my SG they sit snug, no more tears and wiping eyes.

I personally like the Von Zipper line that have the glass lenses.  They take getting use to the weight difference vs. the lightweight plastic, but the additional weight of the glass, along with a thicker style frame keeps them from rattling around on the head, and having the effect of wind buffeting.  

I do agree that the straps probably do the best job of holding a set of glasses in place, but I personally don't like those.  I also had a set of VZ's get accidentally broken, and they sent me a replacement set at no charge!

They may make you look like Roy Orbison (according to the little lady), but my eyes don't dry out, and they stay on the noggin.  They also have one of the best polarizations along with Maui Jim - puts the other makers to shame.

As Possum says, "everyone is different" but I will tell you that I have gone thru 4 different shields ending up with a 15 inch Cee Glide and still has some issues with buffeting until I put the strap on the Oakley's. Went for over 200 miles today (about half on the freeway at high speeds) and the problem is mostly gone... I have very sensitive eyes and can not go with just wrap around glasses without something between the glasses and my skin and though without the strap, my eyes are fine, still dealt with the buffeting.
Everyone is different!

I forgot to mention in my earlier post that I also use one of these baffles. So for me it's a dark smoke Freedom Shield (their darkest is still easy to see through even at night), Harley's fork baffle, and a pair of 7eye frames that fit your head.
I also use a 3 pocket Boss Bags windshield pouch setup. They are the best I have found and I believe a setup like this will not work with the Klockwerks windshield because of its shape.

I bought a pair of PanOptx (7 eye) glasses, the Charata (?) frames that have the foam inserts. They fit my face well and kept the wind out when I was wearing a 3/4 helmet. Now I have a modular helmet and don't use the inserts. But the glasses are the best I have tried, still use them on every ride.

I guess all things are subjective but here goes. As far as glasses go Liberty Sport makes the best glasses. Many different frame measurements so glasses actually fit your face. the foam is very hard like a gasket and is held in place with magnets. Photo senstive with vision correction. I've got oakleys, wiley, costa, and they are great glasses just dont work well on the bike.
As far as windscreens are concerned I have 6 or 7 and they all are good for something. Look good, slow speed high speed or something. but I have had my bagger shield on for over a year and love it. It is a 2 piece low piece is smoked and top piece is clear. let it low for bar hopping and putting around and put it up on the highway(no buffeting) or when its raining. It really looks great and works well.

Man, these are some nice glasses!  I had the PanOptx 7eye jobbies for the last 5 years.  The foam was deteriorating on them, so it was time for something new.  I wear Oakleys Radars everywhere but on the bike where I need wind protection for my contacts and have always prefered the clarity of vision from the Oakleys over the PanOptx.  I also found the huge foam padding of the PanOptx blocks peripheral vision quite a bit.

200 miles yesterday with the new Oakley Wind Jackets and my contacts still felt fine, I had my peripheral vision back and clarity was better and colors were truer, too.  Also, the gasket on the Oakleys is rubber, not foam, so it should last longer.  I wish I'd known about these awhile ago!

Several uears ago when I rode fast I was looking for a good set of sunglasses that would stay on when I turned around without a helmet or shield. I was told about a designer that worked for Oakley and went on his own to build Arnette, I bought a set that say ANET on the side. These are awesome, don't see them listed on the Sunglass Hut site, but they do sell the Arnette brand. Very nice sunglasses and at a resonable price. The ones I wear look similar to googles and have a frim wrap around ear piece. I was told also the lenses will take a beating, which they have proven to very well. I was also told the police department bike crew wear them for these reasons too. I have had them for over 10 years and have no scratches.

I learned of these from some of my tactical buddies in the Army.

The SG-1 from Wiley X (http://www.wileyx.com) are hands-down the BEST goggles I have ever used for long distance (greater than 1000 mile trips) riding, commuting, and tactical/shooting needs.

I am 6'5" tall and I have been street riding since 1972.  I use them on my '84 Softail, which doesn't have a windshield, my 100th Anniversary Road King with it's King-Size windshield, and now with my 110th Anniversary CVO with it's stock windshield. 

I don't wear vision correction glasses so I don't know what it is like to wear anything else for long periods of time, but I have worn my SG-1's for as long as 12 hours per day of riding in hot, cold, snow, and rain without any type of fatigue.  The only problem I ever had was when I first bought them, I kept the strap too tight and I dug them in to my face which made the contact points uncomfortable.  A quick adjustment of the strap now and then and I am golden.

I can turn my head to any angle, including looking behind me in both directions at 80+ mph on the Softail without so much as a nudge.
They take hard impacts (my experience with rocks, shrapnel, etc.).
You can change the lenses for changing needs (many choices).
They fit excellent once you find the right strap tension.

The only non-goggle eyewear I have found that block wind and debris surprisingly well is the Ray Ban Wayfarer.  Even the knock-offs and clones work, but I like a quality lens as light filtration is more important than style or other function.

Losta luck!  Best advice, take your time and don't rush into buying sunglasses or you will  find yourself having 3 or 4 pairs and still not satisfied    It's an individual thing, whats best for some don't work well for others simply becasue of shape.  Now, if your looking for transition lenses, I'm sure everyone has an experience with those and theirs probably some good feedback.  I have been disappointed with both Wiley and PanOptics, after a while they don't get very dark and provide good protection.  I'm still looking for the perfect pair!

Try Pan Optics they cost over $200 for transitional lens (clear / dark) and you can get them in perscriptioin lens too! I luv mine and they do come with a foam liner
