Ain't it amazing?  The roads that most people call scary are the roads we can't wait to get on!!!

My favorite of the ones listed in the full article and pictures is th Beartooth highway.  I really liked it, but my BSR kept her eyes closed on the way up the north face with all the switchbacks.

There's the different mindset of those in cages and us in bikes.  I've done Highway One/Big Sur both ways in a car and on a bike.  Even the BSR loved it.   It's too beautiful to be frightening!  Also done Aspen to Leadville via Independence Pass and Highway 50 in blizzards.  What's so "scary?"

40 of us from the HOG did Ranch Road 170 two weeks ago.  Absolutely gorgeous, and not scary at all.

I've also done Big Sur and the Saddle Road in a cage.

If scary means you need a full tank of gas, and there are no Starbucks, I guess these are scary.

I've been on a lot of those roads myself. I enjoyed them more than feared them.

The Dragon is only scary when there is an 18 wheeler coming at you using both lanes and both sholders of the road.

It's really a nice ride, several of us on the site met up there last month to ride it :coolblue:

I have ridden Hwy1 and it is an amazing beautiful ride.  Ridden Saddle Rd which was fun.  Rode 50 in Nevada in 110+ heat and couldn't wait for it to end...

Going to the Dragon next week. Was supposed to do the Road to Hanna (sp) while in Hawaii but several in our group chickened out. Did it in a Vette in 88 and did it in a jeep a few months ago. I really wish I had went ahead and Rode the Bike. Looking forward to the Dragon. Just hope that there aren't too many Crazies out when we are there.

The dragon is best done on week days.  Too many crotch rockets on the week ends.  It's a good fun ride on a week day.

Been over Hwy 50 from Reno going back to Chicago from a Posse ride two years ago. Nice flat runs out their. Just need to stop for gas when you find it! their is one run tha is about 145 miles of nothing and when you are on a trike you need gas at 120 to 130, I always have one gallon in the trunk!

Being on a trike I was riding less a helmet and got pulled over. I told him to call it in and he will see that trikes do not have to have helments on in NV. All he said was "put it on"
I did, he was wrong hope he knows by now.

And the temp was 105 that day.

I should put these under "The World's Scariest Roads" but that would be a PITA, so here they go.

I pulled these photos from the internet on a website with a bunch of this sort of thing; here are a couple of photos that I saved. I’ll try and find and post the URL.

BadRoad_01: I don’t recall where this road is.

We came upon this stretch last summer and didn't know it was coming.  Pretty well made us pucker till we got through it.  Sharp drop offs on both sides of the road and no guard rails. Highway 12 in Utah just north of Escalante a little bit.  Then we rode on into Escalante in the dark hoping they'd have a room there-luckily they did.  We're going back to that area this summer and hopefully will get to ride it again.  Won't be so bad if we know it's coming, plus there's a really nice motel in Escalante-The Prospector, so I'd like to stay there again too.

The article is actually titled "America's Scariest Drives" which of course we all know are some of
"America's Greatest Rides"

I'm surprised they didn't mention The Road to The Sun in Montana - another great road!

My wife and I have ridden most of the roads listed except Hawaii and Alaska, but they're next on the list.  Her favourite is US 1 Big Sur and mine is Baretooth Pass... However my all time favourite is in the Fraser River Valley along #1 Highway in British Columbia from Spences Bridge down to Hope, amazing ride!

Here are a couple of photos at Big Sur...

Just got back from the Dragon tonight. Pretty Awesome ride. I have to say that it was pretty demanding but well worth the effort. Some very nice scenery and quite a lot of people enjoying the challenge. Came onto a few people who were a little more free spirited then I was. The ride was beautiful...I have to say that I am glad I went but I don't see a repeat trip just for the Dragon. There is a lot of other areas to go to and it is a peaceful quiet area that just really is enjoyable to visit. I f you have not been you ought to try it. Just be prepared for the unexpected.

That's kind of our feelings too.  Glad we did it but probably won't go back again unless we just happen to be with some people that really want to go, and even then we might just meet up with them somewhere later.

 :) :) :o :o

My chapter sponsors two rides a year that include the Dragon and one not mentioned here.

I have ridden AZ highway 191 twice in the past year.  It is referred to as "the Coronado Trail".  Also in the past it was highway 666 or Devil's Highway.  It is one of the least travelled rodes in the US.  Starts at Alpine, AZ and end at the Morenci Copper mine about 85 miles of 450 turns.

Most reviews considered it the curviest rode in America.  Several of us that have ridden the Dragon and the Coronado think the Coronado is by far a better ride.  Not as intense as the Dragon but much longer and has great views and elevation drops of over a mile.

The rode is great and the ride awesome.  We are going back in the fall to ride up the mountain instead of down the mountain.

It is a great ride (as is the Dragon).

I agree Muffman. I rode through Chicago last summer on the interstate from north to the south.  Scared the hell out of me . I got control of my destiny on the road to the sun and some of those beautyful roads in Co..

Grizzley-next time you are in my backyard (British Columbia) look up the Duffy Lake Road-Pemberton (outside Whistler) to Lillooet.  Heard it is rated in the top 10 for the sportbike guys.  They ride it 3X the speed limit, posted 80 kmh/50mph
Wait until summer so it is dry in the shaded areas and ride safe.
