20 CVO Limited, Heated Grips Not Very Hot
« on: January 09, 2021, 08:28:18 PM »

I was using the heated grips on my bike today and I noticed they didn't get very warm at all, no matter whether I had them set at 2 or 6. The bike comes stock with the Kahuna heated grips. I haven't had to use them for months, but I could have sworn that they got so hot on anything above 3 that it wasn't necessary to go any higher. I know the stock heated grips on my previous 2014 and 2017 non CVO Ultra Limited's got to hot above 3 also.
Anyone else notice this on their 20 CVO Limited? Thanks

I have 2020 Limited and mine get just as hot as my previous bikes. I usually don't go above 1 as my hands start to sweat, may have gone to 2 once for a short time.

Need to take bike to dealer and have them fix under warranty.

I have Kahuna heated grips on my bike.  Can't use them over 2 unless below 35 out.

Usually use them between 1 and 2.

I agree. I also have a 2020 SG CVO and the grips are too hot above a 3 even with gloves on. Somethings not working correctly.

Thanks. So let me ask, about how long does it take while traveling at highway speeds does it take to get real hot?

Some of the individual heating elements have broken, but a few are still working.  Happened to a couple of mine.

Depends on the air temperature and how many heat elements are working.
One more thing: some styles of the heated grips never get very hot.  Don't remember exactly which styles, but from the posts above, Kahuna sounds like it's pretty good.

My 16 didnt get very hot, took it in and the the pins that plug in inside the grip itself were screwed up, they replaced and everything was fine.  My 20 has not had that issue so I would take it in and have the dealership look at.

Maybe because the air temp was about 58-63°, the grips won't heat up as much as say when its 40-50° air temp?

Pretty sure they only respond to the setting on their control, not to external temp.

Agree, added Kahunas to '19 RG Special, waaaay better that stock heated grips that came on my '11 and '16 SERGU's. had to have those up to 6 and lived in FL, have not had Kahunas past 3 and now live in NC mountains.

I have a 2019 cvo limited with the Kahuna heated grips not working properly. They will barely get warm unless I hit a harsh bump like a bridge expansion joint or a big crack in the road, then they will heat up for a very short time (like a minute or two) then fade off. I've taken it in many times, and to 3 different dealers. They feel the grips warming slightly and say that the grips are working, that's having them set at 6 and they are barely warm! The last dealer finally agreed the grips should get way hotter and replaced the left grip with the controller. I rode it and the grips were no better than before. That dealer told me "that's as good as it gets". I've had other bikes with heated grips and know how they should be working. I'm very disappointed! I may replace the throttle side grip myself to see if that could be the problem. Another option I'm considering is replacing with aftermarket grips. Let me know if you figure yours out please, as mine are pretty much useless!

Check with another bike that has the heated grips to see if they feel hotter than yours.
My 2019 cvo grips never get above 3
Your bike should feel the same.
Last resort call H-D customer service and tell them, they can reach out to your dealer and help.

There is clearly an issue with your heated grips.  Mine are plenty hot on 2.  Above 3 they would be way to hot.

Reach out to Harley Customer service if dealer does not want to fix.

Best idea yet! Pull bike next to one in lot or showroom and turn both on same number and let HD service manager decide if yours are as warm as floor models'.

One of the dealers had same bike on showroom floor. The grips on that bike got hot right away like normal. There is definitely an issue with mine. The dealers feel some warmth then say "they are working". Other limiteds and cvo limiteds I ride with and have owned all work normal with position 1 or 2 usually being plenty hot. My 19 cvo limited is not working correctly. It's really sad the dealers just blow it off with "they are heating" or "that's as good as it gets"

Walk in with an infra red thermometer, have them watch you and check one on the floor and compare it to yours.

Try calling H-D customer care
800-258-2464 or
414-343-4056

They have been pretty good at helping the dealers get problems solved.
If the bike is under warranty YOU should not have to do all the testing to resolve the issue.

My confidence in dealership to be able to diagnose a problem is now very low. It is under warranty, but at this point I would not care if I have to buy the parts and install them myself. It would be quicker, and I would not lose a day of pay by having to take a day off or take a vacation day to bring it in. I just want them to work as they should. I just tried calling the customer support, but they were closed. I'll try calling them again after a night shift, (I work 12hour+ shifts). I really don't want to waste another day at the dealer only to hear "they are working". Days off are precious. I live up north, so I won't be able to ride until April at earliest. Low temp of -15 Fahrenheit forecast for tonight (spring is a long way off!). I have been patient with this so far (20,000+ miles so far), but am really ready to resolve the problem.

Some dealers do not have “customer service” in their vocabulary.
It’s sad to spend $45,000 + on a motorcycle and have the dealer not fix a minor problem like yours. Harley will pay them for repairs, so, what’s the problem?
Maybe they don’t want repeat customers or referrals?
Of course there are always 2 sides to every story.
My local dealer would drive to my house, pick up the bike, fix it and bring it back.
They seem to value their customers more than some other dealers that I have had to deal with!
Call H-D and relate the issues you have, they have helped me in the past with some of my other bikes.
Good luck

I agree -  Buy a new BMW 430i and take it in for service and they treat you like royalty,  spend the same money on a Harley and you get nothing but hassle.
I pointed this out to my dealer's service manager not too long ago!

The lack of quality (or even effective) service is bad.  But you really don't need to finish the sentence beyond that above.  It's nuts what these things cost anymore.
