Exactly the reason that I don't do the large group rides anymore........they're suicidal. [smiley=nervous.gif]

AMEN!  You're right JCZ, large group rides can be large trouble.

Another thought on this.  Rookies aren't the only ones who make mistakes!  I've seen experienced riders (including myself) do some very stupid things on bikes!

The last organized ride I went on was a H.O.G. Thanksgiving event in NC.  I don't know how many showed up but it was too many.

The Police escorted us along the approx. 30 mile route but they instructed (ordered, really) us to ride two abreast and stay close together in order to keep the pack as tight as possible--they were holding traffic at intersections for us.  This close order is not a good idea along two lane roads with ragged pavement along the fringe, repaired areas, and loose gravel in intersections.

Rookies or experienced, it was a stressful 30 miles.  Some folks were trying to catch up to others and made it three across at times as they worked their way up the pack.  I don't know what they were thinking.

It's good that so many want to participate but there needs to be some better way to send these people out.  Several smaller groups, maybe?

RedFXR2,
YA that's pretty foolish, # 1 what were they thinking on that surface, riding it is one thing, but 2 abreast without the whole lane to avoid holes and whatever, I would've bailed on that one pretty quick. Even if I know every rider was minimum of 10 yrs roadtime. No doubt most would have bailed anyways.
