Title: Carplay Without A Mic Workarounds (For Bikes With WHIMS)
Post by: load97 on May 30, 2019, 06:58:44 AM
Has anyone seen anything released that allows CVO'S & dressers to not have a Mic/Bluetooth  attached for Carplay to show up? This would be for bikes that have a WHIM factory installed. There is already a simple way to get it to work for bikes that don't have a WHIM installed.

I should add that I took my WHIM and disconnected it briefly & then fired up the bike to see what happened. Carplay wouldn't show up at all. So there must be something different with the harness that's installed that the WHIM uses; compared to a bike without a WHIM.

I am interested in this also.    This has driven me nuts since I bought the bike!

I messaged Soundz today (also had previous conversation). I mentioned to them that I unplugged the WHIM module and still couldn't get Carplay to pop up when my phone is plugged in. They said it should. I asked them if they actually did it on a CVO before and I am waiting to hear back. I might pop the fairing back off and unplug the WHIM harness as well and see what happens then.

What we need is to find a Harley Tech on this group that can shed some light on whether or not the factory flash for a new CVO is different in some way that the Digital Technician flash for adding WHIM to a non CVO '19 bike.

I am assuming you have already seen this thread and video?

I knew (probably most of the internet) before that video came out, that you do the checkbox for WHIM without it installed. Only seems to be working with non CVO's etc.

What I am wondering is this:  If a Non CVO has a flash for a 'Wired' headset with a mic and then if you flash for Wireless WHIM maybe the overlaying flashes for WHIM and Wired cause the effect that allows CarPlay to present?

New CVOs come standard with WHIM so they would never have been flashed for a Wired mic so perhaps that is why it does not seem to work the same for a CVO???

Let us know what you hear from Soundz!

I took the fairing off last night since I was doing a new windshield. Carplay definitely doesn't work with the WHIM unplugged. Also, the plug that plugs n to the WHIM is part of the (appears to be) main harness for the radio etc. When I pull up youtube videos of WHIM installs on non CVO Road Glides (2015 & Newer), they have different harnesses. I'm guessing since the CVO's come with the WHIM etc, there is no nee for extra harnesses or plugs.

So it doesn't look like it's simply a case of unplugging the WHIM harness from the bikes main harness. Probably need a 24 pin plug made with jumper wires etc.

Pic4 Res lines are where the harness goes. I believe I’m missing a line off the junction, but anyway gives whomever an idea of where the harness runs.

Will this work using Bluetooth or does it need to be plugged????

I think this might be what we are looking for.   Looks like there is an option to disable that would need to be set in the flash.

Made an appointment with my dealer to try this flash on the 15th.    Will keep you posted....

The dealership I go to just did this for a customer on a 19 Road Glide Special and it worked just like the video shows.

On another forum, a user with a CVO said it did work by disabling the microphone under the Carplay setting. So where it says Mic type, the drop down menu shows wired, wireless, or disabled. Pick disabled. I have to do my 1k service soon, so will ask them to try it and see what happens. To clarify, as there were other videos floating around. This is not the video where you check the box for WHIM enabled, even if you don't have a WHIM. As that was also working for non CVO bikes to get Carplay to show up.

Well my CarPlay saga has finally come to an end!  Was at the dealer today and had then flashed the CarPlay mic setting to disabled and PRESTO!    It finally works without turning on that annoying wireless headset!    Whenever I plug in the phone - CarPlay comes up! :orange: :mango: :bananarock: :apple: :cucumber: :pineapple:

That's awesome. Hope no updates do away with that setting. I have my 1k service to be done Wednesday, and will be having them do it.

They did the flash for me "No Charge!" which was nice.   The whole CarPlay interface seems much more stable now.    I had a lot of connection errors, drops and other weird bugs using the headset.  It might have been due to where it was stored or the sequence for connecting them or maybe even the headset battery...   I don't know.
But not any more!  It just comes up and works.    Finally happy with the CarPlay!

Got my bike back today. They misunderstood and originally had the CarPlay setting set to wired instead. Which didn’t work. While there I showed them the YouTube video which they then followed. All went well. Another bike was in for them to do it to, so I was there guinea pig LOL.

If you have it flashed so it disables the mic under Carplay, can you still use the headset for taking phone calls, intercom and cb? or does it disable for everything?

I do not know the answer to that.  I don't use the mic.  If a call comes in while I am riding I have a prestored text message I can send that says i'm on the bike and I will call you later.    If a text comes in you can have it read over the speakers.    I don't use a CB.   Sorry.

Just had the mike disabled on my 2019 FLHXSE. Apple Carplay now functions without the Sena devise. Perfect.

I think this may have been asked before, when setting the mic to disabled instead of wireless, does it still work for other items, and talking to siri is just disabled?

I cannot see the video as it is private. Can someone give me access to it? Thanks

It’s a two year old thread. Unfortunately, Apple forced HD to update Tech so that the disable option is no longer available. If one wants to pursue that path, they need to find a tech with an older version of Digital Tech as I understand it.

I just picked up a HD-branded 30K for those times I’m not needing comms, and throw it in the tour pack so I can use CarPlay. Bonus is that I can also plug it in to keep it charged.

When I need to use our 50S’, I can still see my phone in the TechGrabber mount and don’t really need CarPlay on the display. That being said, I had CarPlay inexplicably pop up twice while using the 50S, but all other attempts to try the various combinations of startup and connection have proven to be futile.

Do an Internet search and you’ll find lots of other posts and videos with current info… it is a deep rabbit hole time sink :)
