GPS and Time Zone
« on: April 16, 2007, 04:04:29 PM »

Why I ask, if a GPS knows your current location and the time from the satellites, is it necessary to set a time zone and further, it would be nice for it to automatically adjust arrival times accordingly if you are in fact crossing timezones.

Garmin 2730 did not do this although I have yet to check for any firmware upgrade.

Bill,
I thought about that myself in the past.
The unit just isn't set up that way...
The only firmware I am aware of is the daylight savings time correction for Garmins unit, although it's not needed now.

I've wondered that many times.

Last week I called Garmin to find out when MapSource V9 is going to be available. I was told a couple of months.

I also asked the tech rep the very same question about the time zones. The rep checked with her manager and this is what she told me..... Someone else has a patent on that technology. While this sounds like a big load of BS, I can't see any reason why they wouldn't do it if they could, so I'll say I believe them.

Yeah, the coding of that would be much more difficult as it would have to reside on the GPS...cellphones just look at the [majority] of towers...however, it is not impossible since it does know where it is to within a 9' error...just a lot of coding for all the different possible locations.

Still, it would be nice...

It's not even as easy as just reading what time came down with the SAT signal either.  There will always be some conversion to some local time zone involved as the SAT sends Zulu.  So, yeah, we're stuck with time zones.

Garmin hasn't even released a patch for my old 2620.  When I took it to the east coast a few weeks back I just set it start in EDT and then moved it Atlantic time when I crossed over in to what was actually eastern time.  No bid deal...  :nixweiss:
