Also - anybody that recently got one, there is a new software upgrade on the XM website, download it then hook up a mini USB cable to the unit while in the home dock and it will upgrade - supposed to greatly improve the battery life when the unit is off - right now when you turn it off I don't think it really shuts down, keeps using power and won't last long off.

The clerk at Bestbuy was warning me not to download the update for it. He said it had something to do with taking a peice of software off the unit and I would have to buy that capability after I did the update. Not sure what he said but I remember he said not to fall for the BS about the update. You might want to look into it. I think I read something about it on the Circuit City website, user comments.

No, It is the wireless deal I spoke of. When you first start your Inno on the screen you will see a v1.xx on the bottom. Unless you got it early this year it is likely v1.10 only the very early ones were v1.05 and they sold out quick. The FCC said the power was too high and you transmit to other cars near you on the road - which stinks because I loved the wireless on the myfi, could tune in in the house from the unit in the garage. So anyhow, if you upgrade you lose that but only if you have v1.05 - the fixes in the upgrade are many.....

Here are the release notes:

If you are upgrading from Pioneer Inno with software version 1.05, the following changes are included in this XM software upgrade version v1.30:

(1) Due to regulatory issues, as a result of this upgrade,
the FM modulator feature will not be available when the
unit is used in the portable mode or when the unit is
used in the home dock. The FM modulator will now
operate only if the unit is placed in the optional car
dock. If this upgrade is not acceptable to you by
reason of the loss of the FM modulator outside of the
car dock, you may return your unit for a full refund
by contacting XM at 1-866-259-9771. (This offer is
available only to consumers who purchased a Pioneer
Inno XM Satellite Radio with software version 1.05.)

(2) The factory default frequency for the FM modulator was
changed to 97.9.

(3) An issue in which scheduled recordings would sometimes
not initiate unless the radio was powered up first in
the home dock has been addressed.

(4) Users will now be able to play MP3 and WMA files
without XM subscriber activation.

(5) The upgrade provides support for certain MP3 id3v2.3
extended headers that had previously resulted in
continuous 'scanning files' message.

(6) An issue in which the radio sometimes froze when a USB
cable was connected in the midst of powering down has
been addressed.

(7) An issue was corrected in which quickly selecting 2
un-used XM channel numbers in a row with the remote
control would cause the radio to change back and forth
between these 2 channels until a subsequent valid
channel selection was made.

(8) An issue in which artist names longer than 16 characters
resulted in incorrect tune-select pop-up text has been
addressed.

(9) An issue in which the radio would sometimes freeze on
the start-up screen after playing music from a playlist
followed by a hard restart has been addressed.

(10) The time required for the radio to power up automatically
when the USB cable is connected has been reduced.

(11) A screen advisory has been added during firmware
updates, telling the user to keep radio connected to
external power source until the firmware update is
complete.

(12) A screen advisory has been added during a change in the
memory partition, telling the user to keep the radio
connected to external power source until memory
repartition is complete.

(13) If unit is in USB mode and activated over the air,
“scanning files” will not occur. (Scanning files will
occur when USB is disconnected.)

(14) The scanning files dialog box was made larger to cover
the animation graphic.

(15) The “/” character is now always displayed correctly when the
display is running in the large, scrolling format.

(16) Battery life when the radio is off is extended considerably
when starting from a fully charged battery.

(17) Corrected a problem in which the digital clock on the radio
occasionally displayed the incorrect time.

Please select 'CONTINUE' to accept these changes and continue the upgrade, or 'CANCEL' to cancel. By selecting “CONTINUE”, you are agreeing to accept all the changes listed above. If you have any questions regarding this upgrade please contact XM at 1-866-259-9771.

....so there you go, the current standby or off battery life STINKS - like one day - so the fix is worth it.

Thanks for all of the great information...I purchased mine today and will install it in the car tomorrow.  Plan to order the bike mount this week and hope to have it installed prior to Maggie Valley.

Jock....after you've had an opportunity to experiment with it......will you give us a report on how well it works on the bike?

Thanks a bunch!

JC,

Will do...Works great in the car...as for portable, the reception must be enhanced.  I already know that I will need to purchase an antenna for best reception.  I will keep ya posted.

I did the download.  It fixed the battery problem. When using the car mount and external antenna the reception is flawless. I would be a little concerned that the connection between the inno and mount would be secure enough on a bike.
If you are going to use it on a bike figure on using the external antenna.

While flying, I wedged it in the window facing south and had great reception the entire flight.

Today I purchased the Antenna Headphones for the portable use...Very nice...no flaws here...

Now I am reviewing several options for the bike including one that has already been posted in this thread.  Another one is on http://www.cyclegadgets.com...I will keep you posted on my results...At this point I am thinking a car kit with the antenna on the mount from cycle gadgets... I also did the software upgrade and can say definate improvement in signal and major improvement in battery life. I have the handlebar mount for the car kit but this car kit is a joke as far as securely holding the unit - not even close. Will be experimenting this weekend.

The key will be finding a mount that is secure enough but will allow you to easily and without tools pop it out.  Let me know what you come up with.  Also what brand ear plug/antenna did you  purchase?  Are they as comfortable as the stock headphones?

Belkin...they can be purchased at Best Buy...$39 and some change...work well outdoors.  Reviewing options for the bike...I hear everyone regarding securing it on the bike...

Got a standard chrome gizmo holder plate off ebay for 10$ and got it in place but this car holder is a joke. The unit will never stay in place on its own. So I got some hair ties - basically cloth rubber bands, to go around the unit, the car cradle and the mount plate. No antenna rigged up yet, might try on the dash, but I may just use it like an Ipod alot anyhow via the FM modulator, It stores like 50hours of XM - and you can edit it so should the antenna cause problems, I'm good.

Updated install pic, I routed the antenna up into the fairing and came out on the dash, works great, no drop out unless very heavy foilage or riding along a side a building or cliff to the south west...
