If your brave and can use a soldering iron you can easily add one to the rear of the radio. I have done it on a few radios. The wiring for the jack is accessable inside the radio. I used an 1/8" stereo extension cable, cut it about 2 feet from the female end and soldered it in on the board. Run the end out the back of the radio and your set. The best part is that both inputs will still work.

I consider myself brave. I would walk through the gates of hell with a five gallon bucket of water and try to put the fire out, but me with a soldering iron... Now that's some scary chit. [smiley=nervous.gif] [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

LOL, you guys!

Gary, just getting the radio out is a SOB.  The nuts on the side are pretty difficult to get to unless you have fingers like my 6 year-old.

Just need a long allen wrench with one of the wobbly ends on it.  Not even a special tool.  Craftsman, decent auto parts store, etc.  Radio can be a quickie in and out unless you've been insane enough to bury it with tons of extraneous bullchit.

Don,
Not to worry I got your back w/o you soldering the radio. Hell I'll even use your favorite beverage (as long as it is not flammable) to put you out. That way you can be refreshed and extinguished at the same time. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Oh chit, another reason not to fool w/the radio. :-? Oh well I'm not using the Aux plug I have now. Last night after reading some threads about the Garmin GPS had me thinking today while working at my part-time job about acquiring one of them. Shame on you guys for putting all these ideas in my head. ::)

Seems like every time I want to do something on the bike I need some new tool. What happened to the days of a set of wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers and a BFH would take care of everything. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

No kidding, Don.....   very wierd.
So!  On with the question....   If I was a chicken chit, and had fat fingers, no special tools, and no handy six year olds to mess with the nuts, would there maybe be a pair of wires coming out the back of the radio that I could splice into for the aux connection?

Breeze I've not had one open but Dude said he'd done a few.  However....  having been inside of too many other devices doing things that either were or sometimes weren't on the menu what you'll likely find is pretty straight forward.

Look for the connection points on the board where the current aux connector mounts.  On to those  solder points tap a wire pair.  Bring that wire pair around back and hang another jack on the end of them.  Same thing as adding another jack by splicing in to the harness to the current jack except that it's surface mounted and not wired.

Nothing really in the way of "special" tools likely needed.  Normal stuff to take the fairing off.  A long allen wrench is very handy to get the radio out.  And a soldering iron.  And, of course, the BFH.

Since Dude has told us the job is do-able that means the contacts points needed are accessible once the cover is off.  That's all we really needed to know.

Yup...  that's what I ran into when I got there, and then got to thinkin " what's the difference between a cord running from the dash to the dash vs a cord runnning from the GPS to the dash", and then I just put it all back together and had had some more rusty nail to wash the thoughts around.......   I hate not thinkin ahead... :o

For stereo there is probably three wires...just in case somebody tries to follow your instructions...

Sure.  Good thought.  Had visions of a mono plug in my head when thinking out loud there.  The task would be the same though.  So a BFH and a gallon of Elmer's glue and you'd be all set.

Breeze I can only think of a few reasons I'd screw with creating and using a mount in the back of the radio.  If the unit's power was going to be hardwired from the back of the cig lighter you'd already have the harness draped through all the time anyway so could just avoid the clutter in the front of radio.  Even if not hardwired for power inside the fairing if two devices were on the bike A LOT then gaining the second aux port might justify it.  Neither of those circumstances apply to my use though.  So I never screwed with it.

one thing i remember hearing is that if you do this you have to stick a dowel in the front aux port so that the radio knows there is an aux input...YMMV.

If you can figure out the sensor mechanism, this also can be bypassed.

surprised that these people never tapped into the HD radios...I have one of their aux inputs for my Ford HD F350 Radio...

There is a jumper to cut on the back side of the harness to allow the aux port to work when there is nothing pluged into it. I have a radio scheduled to modify next week so i'll post pics and a how to soon.....

oooohhh!  I hadn't thought about the jumper/presence switch.  I would have been SSOOOO mad!
SOoooooo.......
What about the simplicity of mounting a FM transmitter somewhere in the fairing?  Then your AUX would still be available for other uses, (whatever THAT might be), and you could just set your GPS up as a favorite FM station...
Is the fidelity good enough for use with the MP3 player
Is the transmitter strong enough to overcome the stray local sttion onthe same channel
Is there an FM transmitter unit avialable that is conducive to our mounting desires...

The problem with the FM transmitter option is the fact that you will have to change stations depending upon your location...putting it in the fairing won't allow that capability...

Also the Fm transmitter will not have the same sound quality. The way I have done the rear jack the front jack will still work. You just have to only have one input on at a time.

Makes sense to me.  I'll wait for details and then wire it.  At least then I can keep all the wire going through the access hole in the fairing instead of draped across the front of the radio and dash to reach the AUX connector.  That will also let me get rid of the intermittent hum from the poor connection in the AUX hole on the radio....    [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]    Thanks for sharing the smart stuff...
