Depends on your age and physical condition/energy level.....for the reasons stated above.
I did what I though was long trips on Dyna, Heritage, etc. (500 miles a day) and I'd be ready to get something to eat and find the hotel, the bed and TV until I fell asleep. Then I got my first bagger, an Ultra Classic. All of a sudden I was pushing 800-1000 mile days and at the end of a 500 mile day I was still in condition to get off and party the night.
So, in short, yes....it can be done. But it'll not be near as much fun as doing it on a bagger with fairing and windshield. Once you cross over to the high side, you'll find yourself taking a lot more long distance rides and enjoying them a lot more. Speaking from experience.
