How many teeth?
« on: January 17, 2010, 04:29:09 PM »

Looking to replace front drive sprocket on my 07 ultra to a 30 tooth. Does any one know how many teeth the stock drive belt has and how much shorter a belt would have to be? Also wonderinging if anybody has done this and if they found a harley belt to work or went with an aftermarket.

OILCAN1, I looked up a article on the Baker Trans company in one of my old magazines and it sayes that generally if you decrease your tranny pulley by one tooth it will move your axle backwards .125 inch. I went from a 32/70 combo in my 95 heritage to a 30/70 and I managed to use the same belt. I don't know how many teeth your stock front pulley has, but if you are decreasing by only one tooth and you have the ability to slide the axle back .125 inch (1/8th) you should be okay. You could also check this on the Baker web site, or call them. My experience is that they have a friendly tech dept. CAHDBIKER (FYI this article was from 2001)

OILCAN1:

Got parts coming to change my '07 Ultra, and going with the Andrews 30t sprocket #290306 and H-D belt #40056-07 which is 1 tooth less (136T) than the stock 137T belt.  Both belts are 1" width.

Andrews states that 2 teeth less on the gear should equal +/- .250 rear axle position change.  One tooth change on the belt should equal +/- .280.  So this should be a "wash" and keep the adjusters close to where they are now.

Talked with a couple '07 owners on this change, and they are extremely pleased with the results!

Stock ratio:  34/46 to 32/66 = 2.790

With the Andrews 30t:  34/46 to 30/66 = 2.976

HTHs!

I ran a 30T on my 07. A 1 tooth shorter belt is required. Huge improvement!

The 30T pulley and belt are available and collecting dust at my shop because they wouldn't fit my 09 with the new chassis.

Contact me direct if interested.

Just got the bike back this morning. While it was there they discovered the bearing on the trans shaft was loose ended up replacing all the bearings and the main shaft. Oh well thats a whole other story.

The gear reduction is awesome. take off in first is much easier, roll on are way better and crusing at 70 to 75 is right at 2900-3000 rpm perfect sweet spot for cruising.

I'm taking a hard look at doing the 30T swap on my '09 SE Ultra,  are you saying the new chassis change prevents the newer models from making that swap??

The 09-2010 use a different length belt than the 07-08. The 30t front pulley will fit, but requires a 1 tooth shorter belt that I couldn't locate at the time. I think someone has recently found one.
I just bought a 31T for my 09, should work with the stock belt and will provide the same 2.97 final with the 09-10 stock 68T rear. Same final gear the 07-08s end up with when the 30T front is used with the stock 66T rear. Confused yet? That hurt my brain.

Steve

PS- used 30t and belt have been sold.

The '09 and later Touring models have a 1/2" longer wheelbase, different rear sprocket, and different belt.  So while you can still change the gear ratio by changing out trans sprockets and belts, you will need to use different parts than the previous models to achieve the same final results.
