Title: Oil Cooler
Post by: NYChog on February 18, 2005, 07:16:50 PM
Hi all,

I wanted to install an oil cooler kit on my bike.  I have a 2005 Electra Glide Classic.  I was checking out the 2005 Harley catalog and I see that  on page 454 there are two oil coolers one is a premium oil cooler and one is a super premium oil cooler.  there is  about $135 dollar difference, which to me is a big difference.  Which one should I get?  And Why?

Thanks in advance :)...

I can't tell you which one to buy, but buy one for sure. I put one on my 2002 Ultra I had and it dropped the temp up to 35 degrees compared to a friends bike w/o a cooler. Either way it's a very good investment.

An oil cooler is a good investment for the bike. I'm not sure of the difference in the two other than looks, and you can add another $45.00 to the "super Premium" for a chrome cover. They both have thermostats built in which is important because in cold weather the cooler is bypassed.

The super premium has a built in thermostat which opens the cooler at a predetermined temp. Works with a spring I think. The engine fitting is different to accomodate the thermostat.

It's sad I don't know this, but I don't have a clue.  Of the two cooler choices mentioned which one is the unit HD hung on the SEEGs?

Hey Kbiforce

I was just wondering which oil cooler do you have?

I have a SEEG now, but on my 2002 Ultra I had the 62868-99B which was the smaller one. I think it's discontinued now. . I see it in the 04 catalog but not the 05. The only thing I didn't like was that adapter wanted to loosen up on oil changes. If I went that style again I would just loctite the nut.

The difference between the 2 units is strictly cosmetic, their is no difference in functionality so, if looks don't matter buy the less expensive one!!! [smiley=1syellow1.gif]

All I can say is the chrome cover is a pain it packes with dirt and crap that the fender dosen't stop and is a bi**h to clean.

Magoo, hit a gun shop.  I've got some cleaning "wads" which are basically just small plugs of a very soft sponge type material that go over the end of a cleaning wand and are used to push through shotgun barrels.  Just radically shortened one of the cleaning wands and with the front wheel fully deflected this is a perfect tool for cleaning between the teeth of the chrome cover on the oil cooler.  Takes no time at all.  Does a good job.  And can use it to both wipe wax on and wipe wax off when the times come and I'm feeling that energetic.

Wax on, wax off.

The difference in the two new style coolers is, the Super Premium cooler has a new replacement oil filter mount with the lines coming from it(you can buy it in chrome or silver) -the cheaper cooler hooks to an adapter that mounts between the existing mount & the oil filter.

Both have thermostats.
