insulted by local dealer on trade in on my CVO
« on: August 19, 2006, 09:23:48 AM »

2004 Yellow cvo deuce with screamin eagle II pipes, hd backrest, 06 high def headlight, 7000 miles, brand new rear tire, bike is in show condition not a scratch on it, $500.00 worth of LED lighting, six speed screamin eagle trans installed, hot toppers on EVERY bolt and nut, with all original parts in boxes. He had the nerve to offer me $15000.00 trade in value.  That tells me the bike depreciated 15,000.00 in less than 18 months.  Not bad will reconsider my 5th harley purchase. Hondas are not even depreciating that damn fast!!!!  Bad feeling in my gut as to where harley is headed now never thought i could say a bad thing about them in regards to retaining their value.  All work was performed by dealer.

The good days are over for Harley trade-in's. They are using Kelly Blue Book which shows trade as $15,300. NADA is higher but they want to take your bike for the lowest price. Sell at retail and buy at wholesale.. Retail on these bikes $20-23k. Try to retail it. CVO bikes have a much smaller market.
After you have owned a CVO bike, I guess you will try a newer CVO or go over to Big Dog or something like that.
I don't see any Harley I would have to have today.. My next bike will likely be a Big Dog..
I bought a FXSTDSE2 used last winter with 144 miles. Low $20k range.
Best of luck, sounds like you have a nice bike...

Never; NEVER, bought a bike I was going to ride for it's resale value.  If it maintained well that's just icing on the cake.  If you didn't buy a bike as expensive as those bikes were because you loved, but instead got it for any other reason the screwing you're sensing was self-inflicted.

I always thought the whole H-D line of BS about re-sale value was how you talked wifey into letting you buy the damn thing. Me, $7K ( 1984 FLH, my first brand new H-D) or $32K ( what my 03 SERK cost me new out the door)  I love em, can't live without em. One's good, two's better, three is damn near orgasmic !

Big B

PS
From what I'm seeing around Dago, you're dealer will re-sell your bike for $5-7k above what he's offering you for it. Post it here, E-bay, your local motorcycle trader publication for $22k or BO and see how it goes. Best of luck to you.

Gary, had a few bikes but never had any wives.  From the outside looking in, however, the process doesn't look that dissimilar.  Those that tinker and adjust and repair have a long and happy go of it.  Those that look for perfection right out of the box and never change seem to be trading in every few years.  So you must be on to something  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] .

Post it on this forum or Bike Trader.
It will sell!
Spiderman is right. That dealer plans to sell your bike and make 5 to 7 K.

Either that or I'm listening to my accountant..... "Cheaper to keep her". [smiley=nixweiss.gif] [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]
When we went to sell our 98 Road King we found that the price we were willing to part with her at, was not at the same level of value on the street.  It is paid for, the insurance is cheap since we hardly ride it, and when one of our regular rides is down, we have a spare.  Brother comes in from out of town, he's got a fine ride.  So we found it cheaper to keep her.   [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Oh, were you talking about marriage?   [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Who hasn't heard all the who shot john about how Harleys hold their value or how they hold their value better than the "jap" bikes.  I enjoy the whole "Harley" thing as much as most, but I'll admit that my third bike is an '06 Yamaha FZ1 and I love to ride it.  I paid about $8,300.00 for it new and it will out perform anything Harley has to offer.  I will be able to enjoy the Yamaha for a year or two and maybe drop $2,000.00 to $3,000.00 when I sell it.  Try that these days with a Harley.

I currently have an '04 V-Rod on eBay and I'll be lucky if I only drop $9,000.00 or $10,000.00 on it after 2 years.  The way V-Rods are selling I could drop $12,000.00 to $14,000.00 on the bike.  I'll keep it before I take that kind of hit.

There are a lot of reasons to buy a Harley, but don't be taken in by the "HOLD THEIR RESALE" story.  Those days are past!

EBAY EBAY EBAY....You are stupid if you don't sell the bike on EBAY. I say this because I just sold two used Harley's and broke even on the first and MADE $3600 on the second. Both were Peace Officer special editions in immaculate condition and I did very well on them. I was offered $18,500 for my 06 Ultra at the stealer, I wanted to get $22K out of it on Ebay and it sold to the high bidder for $24,600  [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif] . That extra $$ paid the taxes on my 07 CVO and the remainder went directly into the new bike. It will cost you less than $100.00 to sell the bike and you will get thousands more than trade in.
