FXR3 Fork Brace Truss
« on: December 28, 2012, 04:01:25 PM »

Hi All?
General question. My FXR3 has 39MM forks, correct? Come braces I've been looking at say for 39MM forks without chrome? Does the chrome thickness really cause these braces trusses not to fit?

Seasons Greetings Robert ...... yes, the chrome can cause a fitment problem.  I've tried a few different ones, and sometimes the clearance is ok even with the chrome ..... they all seem to be different.  The best fork brace that I've used is the Harley SE (German made - metric fasteners) Good design, well made, and if you crank on your FXR, eventually the chrome on the SE brace will start to come off. This is a little bit of evidence as to how much those 39's like to move around.  With the chrome removed from the SE brace, it fits very nicely on chrome lower legs, and it looks better polished anyway.

Short answer ...... some braces will fit, others .... no!

I did some research on this topic myself. I plan on doing the Fork Cartridges from Works Performance and Fork Brace this winter. I believe a member on this forum used the Fork Brace from CCE and it worked fine. Here is the thread: http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=45345.0

Installed the CCE fork brace on a friends '91 FXRS Lowrider.  The CCE unit was well made, well finished. The fitment of this brace was an issue because of the chromed lower legs. It had to be 'wedged' between the forks with the axle loosened, per instructions. Then the axle was tightened to spec.  I rode his bike after the install, and it handled better.  My only concern with this brace was the 'tweaking' of the forks when the axle was torqued to spec.

The SE brace is a better design in my opinion .......
Happy New Year!

I did some more research tonight with regards to upgrading my front suspension. I am now looking into the Ricor Intiminators. Can you guys give me any feedback regarding those? Lucille, can you elaborate on the problems regarding the CCE brace. My FXR3 obviously came with chrome lower legs and I would like to keep it that way. Any issues with fitment when it comes to the SE brace and chrome lower legs that you know of? Thanks for your help.
