Strange whistle, is it normal ?
« on: August 15, 2017, 06:22:00 AM »

Hello all,

on my new to me 2014 Road King CVO, i notice a whistle which seemed coming from the gear box like a turbocharger. I know that there is a whistle on 5st gear but this one happen on all gears...

Do you have an idea of what it could be?

Thanks in advance for your help, Pit'

Is it more prevalent when you are in a left hand corner? A scalloped rear tire would be my guess.

Could it be air blowing by the bottom opening of your steering stem?  Seen that once on a metric bike.

Rear tyre is ok. It's more like a mechanical noise...

If I can safely assume your "whistle" is more of a "whine", and further assume it actually is coming from the transmission, you may have one or more bearings going bad.  The inner primary bearing has been problematic since the Cruise Drive was introduced, and there have also been instances of the shaft bearings on the right side failing.  Btw, the 5th gear whine that was considered normal in earlier models wouldn't apply to your 2014, the gear set was changed to helical from spur or straight cut several years back.  The only gear set still running spur gears now is first.

Ratcheting primary chain tensioner locked?  Sometimes my '12 and '13 would sound like they had a turbo charger louder than the exhaust.  I replaced the POS stock tensioner with a Hayden M6 tensioner.  Helped a lot.  You'll still have a whine, but much less.
