Title: Critter Gawking
Post by: Chains on February 16, 2016, 06:35:55 PM
Since we missed the 2015 Maggie Valley GTG, we were not inaugurated into the Crtter Gawking Society.  Today we left the chalet in Gatlinburg and headed to Maggie Valey to search for critters. Could not take 441 out of town as it was closed due to snow and ice. Undaunted we decided to take 321 and head up to route 40 then take 276 to the Valley. After we ate lunch at Apple Andys we headed to the park in search of critters. We had 3 successful sightings.  Here is the first.

Hoping for a honorary CGS membership.

Still remember the most "uh oh" critter gawk.  The year at Cripple Creek.  Tooling along in a long line of bikes and, well now, there goes a bear cub across the road to momma bear  ::) .

Gentlemen (and Twolane),

As President and Grand PooBaa of the CVO Harley Critter Gawking Society I feel compelled to iterate that there is absolutely no need to formulate a petition on Jims behalf for entry into the Society. As has been stated in other threads pertaining to the subject of entry into the Society, the beauty, or dare I say genius, of this organization is that every member of the CVO Harley site is already a member. While it is true that there will only be a finite number of Charter Members, defined as those 12 individuals who attended the first expedition in MV in 2015, any and all current forum members are invited and encouraged to participate.

Cudos to you Jim, my friend, for taking the time to gawk at critters and to post said gawking evidence on the site. I would mention that part of the fun of gawking is to name the critters that have been gawked, kind of like the true scientist do, but feel free to use your own flair if it were.
For instance if the elk were located near the visitors center, one might call it a Great Smoky Oconaluftee Big Balled Bull Elk. Since you gawked it, you get to name it.

I do suppose that we need another classification for those members who choose to participate in Critter Gawking activities such as you have demonstrated. Let it be known from this point forward that any and all members who choose to participate in Critter Gawking activities shall be permitted and encouraged to refer to themselves as Active Members of the CVO Critter Gawking Society with all rights, privilages and accolades.

Well, with that said.... As I am a big fan of 2K's avatars,, Does that mean I like looking at jiggly critters? Is that even a correct classification or is puppies a better term?

While Critter Gawking is usually confined to non-human species I reckon the same rules apply...

You gawk 'em you get to name 'em. But you have to post pictures.....

Don

The next time a bear runs out in front of you, snap a picture, come up with a name to identify the species, and post the picture...

Then you can add "Active Member CVO Harley Critter Gawking Society" to your moniker.

Will do.  Actually had a camera slung around my neck that day.  The little bastard came across the road two bikes in front of but I was paying far more attention looking over in the direction he was going for momma bear than I was to grab the camera in time.  I snapped a couple pics but missed him.  Bad aim.....

Does the goat on the hill in MV count?
Title: Re: Critter Gawking
Post by: SHRADER on February 21, 2016, 04:25:20 PM
Well

The goat would count if he hadn't already been classified by another member. If I remember correctly several of us first identified him with a spotting scope just after breakfast one morning, we even named him George and his companion is Georgette. Since that time George has become the defacto Mascot of the 2016 MV GTG. The Society would welcome any pictures that you may have of George, if in fact you have some photos, but as he has already been classified he may not be used to secure active membership status.

Title: Re: Critter Gawking

Critters should be alive and well as no harm during gawking may occur to said critters. Gawking at dead critters is considered bad form and does not count for inclusion to the society.

Very nicely put Eric....

Yes all critters are to be alive and well for inclusion into the Society, however one can use unfortunate opportunities such as these to practice naming the species if one desires...

Hmmm, ok, I'll give it a shot.  He lost his antlers when he decided to run through rather than jump over the fence.  So he's not that much of a "he" anymore.  So I'll go with mod-doe-rater  :nixweiss: ?

Good name Don, I really like it.

I might add that we normally try to include the location and other specific details to more clearly define the species, so in this case a more appropriate name may be A Southern Missouri, Fence Hitting, Rigormod-doe-rater.

I disagree with the above, a South Carolina Roadkill/Fencekill Antlered/Antler-less Deer is considered a rare find if the body is still warm/slightly cool. You just can't in sporting terms mount the head or antlers. I would vote for inclusion into the society once properly identified and resubmitted along with some sausage in Eureka Springs this May.  :2vrolijk_21:

No Eric, you won't.need an absentee ballot.

To overturn a Presidential decision requires a vote of a least 3/4 of the Charter Members in person, at a venue of his choice. So the next available time will be MV16. To veto a decision requires 3/4 majority of members present, so I don't think he's got a chance....

Susan was so lucky back in 1966 to lasso such a fine catch as myself. In fact it will be 50 years on March 31st, I am a saint to be so good a catch. All good reading,.....At the moment I'm going to take the chance and pop back to some Critter Gawking. I took this at 07:30am
I do believe  they are called "Canlish Geese", as I'm not being to sure of being a member of Critter Gawking Society I've posted this on the off chance it would be accepted as a Critter Gawking post and if I my point out the critters have been named.
Doe to the fact I live on the other side of the pond I thought I my hitch a ride with them by tying a bunch of their legs together to a harness. Then catch a lift on their way back to your side of the pond in order to make that MV16 Vote.
But all I got from them was a lot of "quaking and honking" the thing they do,.. one can only imagine what their reply to my suggestion was  as they flocked off quaking and honking :nixweiss:
So I won't make it there to VOTE!! (some one may vote twice) ::)   BTW. no pass port required when traveling by Canlish air.

longlast, over here in the ColoniesStates I believe they would be called Canadian Geese. They have a nasty habit of pooping all over everything. ( It may be good that they escaped your attempt to harness them into an air cargo device to bring you and your bike across the pond to Maggie Valley 2016. I doubt you would ever be able to clean all that poop off yourself or your bike.)
I noticed some white or very lite gray birds also in the submitted photograph. What kind of bird/flying animal are they? Of course only our illustrious President/Grand PooPa is the sole member to be able to confirm membership into The CVO Harley Critter Gawking Society. However,
you do get my vote and should be our first European member. But remember these guys aren't as nice as I am and are a hard bunch to sway!

I agree on the pooping issue that's all they do on their visit here. Perhaps these graceful shameless critters would give Grand PooPa a visit and poo, swade the hard bunch on membership confirmation?
The little white birds are "we call,.. "chit gulls" they do the same as the geese but with one factor their pooing is air born. When they're flying around beware of incoming  :'(   Thanks for your vote   8)

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah!
Susan was so lucky back in 1966 to lasso such a fine catch as myself. In fact it will be 50 years on March 31st, I am a saint to be so good a catch. I hope she gets me something nice for our anniversary like a pair of heated slippers. I'm getting her a new gas powered electric start blower for the driveway.

H'mmm them there is a consideration - seems you and yer spottin scope are a year late to the party. Them goats was spied and verified a year earlier with the picture posted  :huepfenjump3:

Although if 2015 is the official beginning I guess I'll have to stand by and gawk as that was the first MV I missed since I started going due to my injury and resulting surgery from waterfall gawking.

Longlast,

Let me be the first to officially congratulate you, our first Active Member from another country with all honors, privilages and accolades.

Congratulations, and/or Cheers!!!!

I might suggest that you could choose a name that is, shall we say, a bit more creative for this particular species other than Canlish Goose. Earlier in this thread a dead whitetail deer became a Greyhoundious Chased Southern Missouri Fence Wrecking Mofo Rigormo Doe Rater.

The next time a bear runs out in front of you, snap a picture, come up with a name to identify the species, and post the picture...

Then you can add "Active Member CVO Harley Critter Gawking Society" to your moniker.

On behalf of the CVO Harley Critter Gawking Society I wish to extend a personal invitation to you to participate in the 2016 Expeditions which are scheduled for WV in July and MV in September. I am hearby reserving the passenger front seat of my F150 exclusively for you at the event(s) of your choice. The only stipulation is that you not attempt to modify said seat in any way from its factory form and function.

In addition, I am also offering to provide deluxe accommodations, at my own personal expense, at the 2016 West Virginia Gathering at the Expedition location, which is situated at a secret location between the scenic Bluestone River and the Norfolk Southern Railway. Entertainment actives at this location include; swimming, fishing, hunting, grass mowing, and as a special added incentive a personal tutorial on the operation and maintenance of a 1962 Allis Chalmers Track Loader.

I hope this in some small way atones for your exclusion last year...

And by the way, you need to officially name your critter(s).

As President of the CVO Harley Critter Gawking Society, National Vice President of the Hill Billy Rocket Riders and a Certified Zen Master of Pondering, I am not sure that I understand your question entirely. I don't think that any of us are particularly unusual, quasi-entertaining at times perhaps, but not unusual.

The really unusual stuff doesn't happen until a GTG, then the total foolishness begins. At MV15 we determined, among other things, that certain tasty table snacks will maintain quite a nice flame when lit, that the folks who decide the paint schemes for the CVO motorcycles determine the colors by going to Helen Georgia to observe the patterns of the butterflies they encounter, and that a lot of fun can be had by forming a Society dedicated to the observation of all types of animals...

Don't worry too much I'm sure you guys will fit right in...
I am certain that others will soon chime in...

All I know is I named the white one George and Mikeytee named the brown one Georgette. That's there names not the official Critter Gawking species name which went something like The Great Smoky two horned, rock climbing, head butting, mountain Goat of Comfort Inn Bald.

You don't need a decimalized number, you are an Active Member in good standing, with all honors, privilages and accolades.

Thank goodness TN lives in South Carolina though just barely. Those could be The Great Savannah River, Black Feathered, Dead Animal Control, Predators. Very rare as you can only view them along the wild and free Savannah River. Not to be confused with their cousins the Turkey Buzzards or the Black Chimney Hugging Buzzard of Coastal Georgia of which the latter is rare indeed.

I was not actually the photographer of the photo, a young associate of mine took the picture yesterday with his cell phone from the roadway. I suspect given the fact that there is no place to park that he was driving. Given the circumstances I think he did pretty good.....

They are very difficult to photograph due to their superior sense of hearing and eyesight. They are also light on their feet so they are difficult to hear as they approach. I may have to use a trail camera if all else fails. I'm sure if I miss it there will be the tell tale mounds they tend to build during their romp in the pine straw. Time will tell, I will do my best.

I don't know if you truly realize how rare this photo is. What I think you may have is akin to a photo of Bigfoot, swimming with the Loch Ness Monster, in Willy G Poolboys private pool.

What I think I see is one Homosassa Red Headed Crane standing with two Homosassa Beheaded Cranes. We may need other Critter Gawkers to confirm this, but that is what I think it is. Truly a once in a lifetime unbelievable shot.

I hearby decree that during the WV GTG next month, there will be a meeting of all available Critter Gawking Society Members to decide a proper course of action to study these rare creatures. I know it might be a slight inconvenience, but it may be necessary for several of us to move into your new house for a couple months, to help with this effort.

These critters may be even more rare than one would think - in the 1830s people ate them like turkeys. Just about wiped out the species 'cause they were tasty apparently. Great capture Chains...

No Film Crews as far as we seen, but the Buffalo have been winning the Buffalo vs. Tourist game, Buffalo 4 Tourist 0... we were pretty nervous as we had a bigger bull, way to close for comfort, for a couple of cow pokes form NW Iowa. All's well that ends well.

Yes, and those sightings were verified, certified, and officially noted with photograhical evidence.  How's that Bigfoot repellant going?  Just hearing about it the other night has caused us to be Bigfoot-free for over a week.  Powerful stuff!

Absolutely Clay!!

There were multiple, and I mean multiple, Sasquatch sightings during the recent MV GTG. It was almost unbelievable!! It was a virtual Sasquatchapalooza!!!

I have a picture of one of the sightings but I am afraid that it might be too shocking for the general public to see. I mean this fine organization is generally a G rated environment and I am not sure that most folks would be ready for such a shocking photo.

If however there was enough interest, I suppose I could post it with the approval of specific folks such as Neal and Gary, and with a disclaimer of course.

Surprising they are faster than a normal turtle but by the time I got my phone he was pretty far away. If you run up on them they tuck in fast to protect themselves.  They have burrows all over this area. If you run them off more than likely a rather fair size rattle snake takes over the burrow so turtles are my choice.   Saw a skin 7 1/2 feet long two streets over from us of a rattlesnake the guy killed in front of his house in April while sunning itself on the road.

Mike it was the Stink Butt Mole. Rarely seen. Waterlogged, it had swollen to twice it's normal size, and figured from the swelling and smell, it was about to blow any minute.  My son found it.  According to my "rules of the pool" (made up on the spot), he found it, he had to get rid of it.  From a distance it smelled like a dead possum combined with a dead armadillo with a little whiff of long dead water rat mixed in.  Could hear the neighbors gagging in the next yard.

Certain members of the CVO Harley Critter Gawking Society, including myself and TN, recently pondered on this very same question. As I recall the concensus was that since the Sasquatch is considered to be part ape and part man, and whereas a quantity of apes is called a Troop and whereas a quantity of men is called a group, that a quantity of Sasquatch is a Troop Group.

Deducing further one can say that a Troop Group is an Army, therefore a group of Sasquatch should logically be called an Army....

Any more questions??

Truly remarkable and gorgeous critter. Some folks hate snakes, some folks like em so much they invite em to church in my neck of the woods. Me I generally leave em be as long as they ain't botherin nothin.

Yep, if'n they ain't poison they are welcome at my place. Copperheads, Moccasins and Rattle Worms beware

I dig it Jimmy

I was recently fishing on a local earthen dam and spied me a Southern WV, Rock Dwellin, Big Tailed, Copperheaded Rattle Moccssin. There are unfortunately no pictures as I was too busy trying to get the heck outta there to take a picture. I have since decided that this critter can have the dam area of the lake as I am not nearly so eager to fish there as before the sighting. I did buy me some shot shells for my 22 mag but have yet to work up the guts to go back. He was a "Biggin". his body was nearly as big as my wrist.

I gawked the remains of this rare critter in South Dakota in August. They are known to burrow underground in the Black Hills, coming out at night in packs to feast upon dogs, cattle, other varmints, bipeds or pretty much anything they can sneak up on. Very dangerous and best left alone if you come upon one…

I live out in the middle of nowhere east of El Paso, TX.  For the past year or so, we were having issues with drug runners (mules) and people smugglers (coyotes) crossing our land at night to by pass the border patrol checkpoints.

To help catch the folks, I set up some game cams near a stock tank we have on our property.  We were able to help catch some poachers.  The big deer went missing after the poachers came by.

Other then the cows, rabbits, road runners, quail, dove, vultures, we had some interesting visitors.

This is the big buck that went missing right before deer season opened.  At one time we had about 10-15 deer running around the area with a few bucks.

Jaguar?  Never saw one, only big cats I saw in Texas were cougars.  A vet used to hunt big cats near & over the Mexican border, did pretty well, sheep & goat ranchers were grateful.

It is a bobcat. We also have a cougar (feline type) who passes thru the area. I just don’t have any pictures yet.

We did have a photo of a coyote that was very red and everyone thought it was a Mexican red wolf.  The local game warden told us it was a coyote. Red wolves around here were wiped out.

Tail looked long to me in the pic.  Saw bobcats in West Texas.  Have never seen a wolf there - any kind.  Saw a lot of coyotes people liked to call wolves, have seen some reddish ones  but not as red as you describe.  Foxes, porcupines - you name it.  Cougar I saw was a female, tailing a doe with 2 young fawns at about dusk.  Let her walk, no doubt 1 less fawn by the next morning.

You have a good place & a good spot for a camera.  Enjoyed your pics.   :2vrolijk_21:

We stopped in the manatee area on the Merritt island wildlife Refuge and saw these little guys.    Was able to get them to about 10 feet away.

We then parked and got a glimpse of this Gator, there was a manatee 5 feet away from him but didn’t get the shot.   Still pretty neat to see

Certainly a scary situation for all, and we hope you & yours stay safe.

Our daughter is currently living in Maryborough, Queensland and needless to say we're worried for her safety and wonder if it is time for her to relocate.   :nixweiss:

God bless and keep all safe.

3 of them come to the house, they fly over the fence to eat the sunflower seeds from the cardinal bird-feeder that get knocked off.

The sax playing squatch sightings are rare, I'm sure he'll recruit more to form The Big Feet Band.  :nixweiss:
