Wouldn't it be nice if they spent the money educating cage drivers how to notice an oncoming motorcycle and not pull out in front of it.  Boycot Georgia for now!

Another interesting "tidbit" I found out about recently is that FDOT---The white cars you think are only interested in trucks can chase, stop, radar speed trap and ticket passenger vehicles and motorcycles in any state.

So they can chase you through GA into Florida and still give you a ticket.

Also apparently they have jurisdiction over local and state policing agencies any time it comes into question!!!!

So we now have another national policing agency along with the FBI, U.S. Marshall's Service and ATF.

Drive safe!!

Wow, that is pretty crappy.  I like riding in North GA but may stay out of there for a while.

Here's a portion of an email that was written by a local ABATE officer and forwarded to me.  Seems these road blocks will be set up at MC events.

 Tim,
Thanks for sending this out. I mentioned it at our ROAR Rally last week. We received notice of this from MRF a couple of weeks ago. This should concern us all. NHTSA has been offering these "grants" and it appears they are looking to model what New York did last summer. They set up road blocks outside large public motorcycle gathering events and stop every rider to "check" their safety equipment, gear and insurance and lecture them about riding "safety". They only stop the bikes and never the autos who are running over us! MRF and ABATE encourage you to contact the Sec of Transportation, Ray LaHood ( 202-366-4000) and voice your displeasure at this discrimination. I also encourage you to contact your State Rep and State Sen to demand answers from the Ga State Patrol about their plans for this grant. This should be a close up view of possible discrimination that should motivate all Ga motorcyclist!

Not just a Georgia problem. AMA has been on to this for a while. Just one more example of prejudice against motorcyclist.

Curious about what safety equipment is required that they'd have to pull you over to verify possession and use of.  States might require helmets, eye protection, even long pants or long sleeves.  Even if gloves and footwear other than sneakers were mandated it's all seen visually without a traffic stop.  As for some "lecture" on anything civil law enforcement has no right to demand I accept such a "service" from them absent a court's order.  Such a stop would be one of the rare times when the OiC had to compete to say as much as I was.

Maybe DOT approved helmets?

Georgia does not specify helmet rating! Just have to be wearing some type of cover!

 :nixweiss:

Had the same thought.  And it would at least be an excuse.  But even that can be a an awfully quick check.  And to my knowledge GA has no DOT requirement.

It's one of the several states with some variation of the asinine requirement that helmets are required and that approved helmets are listed on some docket of approval maintained by a Board of Public safety.  Except, of course, there never was such a list.  So there's nothing approved.

GA may have updated their statute since then.  But I remember the Alspach case ten years or so ago in which a GA state court ruled the state's helmet law was unenforceable for just that reason (it being in practice too vague.)

SEAT BELTS!!   ;D    ;D     ;D

You laugh but several years ago there was a seat belt moment in Missouri.  At least close enough....

A now retired state Senator was also a physician.  He was also adamantly opposed to any change in state law that would allow riders in Missouri to be without their helmets.

Each year or so an attempt is made in the state legislature to change the law.  One of the years the law seem to have more traction than most the Senator used the advantages of his seniority to add an amendment requiring seal belt use if a rider chose to ride without a helmet.

It was obviously ka ka.  Everyone knew it.  But it killed the bill that year.

To my knowledge I believe the above statement to be true unless there have been revisions I am unaware of recently...

It's not about enforcement at all, it's about GETTING THE GRANT MONEY FROM THE GOVERNMENT.  The Georgia Patrol could care less about law enforcement (believe me I know), it's all about revenues and how much money they can get their hands on.  They'll put whatever they have to on the reporting docs to justify the grant, then take the money and run with it.  Not only will they get the grant $$, but think of all the ticket revenue they can/will produce by using the "program" to stop more bikers out there........

With statewide revenues way down and spending still out of control, the Governor of Georgia and just about every municipality and county have mandated that every revenue producing entity across the state ramp up revenues and collections immediately.

So what if it's not the right equipment, here's your ticket now plead your case in court......  9 out of 10 folks will just send in the money rather than take a day to spend in court or hire a lawyer to fight such a small amount.....

Maybe we'll jumpstart change by collectively sending a strong signal out today by voting.  Both parties suck - how about we form the MotoScoot Party? :2vrolijk_21:
