Official: NY Governor caught on wiretap
« on: March 10, 2008, 04:24:08 PM »

NEW YORK - A law enforcement official has told The Associated Press that New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer's involvement in a prostitution ring was caught on a federal wiretap.

The official says Spitzer is identified in court papers as "Client 9," and the wiretap was part of an investigation that opened in the last few months.

The official says the New York governor met last month with at least one woman in a Washington hotel. The law enforcement official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

NEW YORK (AP) — Gov. Eliot Spitzer, accused in news reports of being involved in a prostitution ring, apologized to his family and the public on Monday at a hastily called news conference. He did not elaborate on the story.

With his wife at his side, Spitzer told reporters that he "acted in a way that violates my obligations to my family."

"I have disappointed and failed to live up to the standard I expected of myself," he said. "I must now dedicate some time to regain the trust of my family."

The New York Times reported earlier in the day that Spitzer told senior administration officials that he was linked to a prostitiution ring. The report cited an anonymous administration official.

The Times reported that a person with knowledge of the governor's role believes the governor is identified in court papers as a client of a prostitution ring. Four people allegedly connected to a high-end ring called the Emperors Club VIP were arrested last week.

The Web site of the Emperors Club VIP displays photographs of scantily clad women with their faces hidden. It also shows hourly rates depending on whether the prostitutes were rated with one diamond, the lowest ranking, or seven diamonds, the highest. The most highly ranked prostitutes cost $5,500 an hour, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said the defendants arranged connections between wealthy men and more than 50 prostitutes in New York, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Miami, London and Paris.

The Times reported that the governor's travel records show he was in Washington in mid-February, and that one of the clients arranged to meet with a prostitute on the night of Feb. 13.

The case is being handled by prosecutors in the Public Corruption unit of U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia's office. Garcia spokeswoman Yusill Scribner said the office had no comment.

Around a stunned state Capitol in Albany, lawmakers and staff huddled around televisions to see the news conference. A media mob gathered outside the office of Lt. Gov. David Paterson, who would become governor if Spitzer was to resign.

Spitzer, 48, built his political reputation on rooting out corruption, including several headline-making battles with Wall Street while serving as attorney general. He stormed into the governor's office in 2006 with a historic share of the vote, vowing to continue his no-nonsense approach to fixing one of the nation's worst governments.

Time magazine had named him "Crusader of the Year" when he was attorney general and the tabloids proclaimed him "Eliot Ness."

But his stint as governor has been marred by several problems, including an unpopular plan to grant driver's licenses to illegal immigrants and a plot by his aides to smear Spitzer's main Republican nemesis.

Spitzer had been expected to testify to the state Public Integrity Commission he had created to answer for his role in the scandal, in which his aides were accused of misusing state police to compile travel records to embarrass Senate Republican leader Joseph Bruno.

Spitzer had served two terms as attorney general where he pursued criminal and civil cases and cracked down on misconduct and conflicts of interests on Wall Street and in corporate America. He had previously been a prosecutor in the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, handling organized crime and white-collar crime cases.

His cases as state attorney general included a few criminal prosecutions of prostitution rings and into tourism involving prostitutes.

In 2004, he was part of an investigation of an escort service in New York City that resulted in the arrest of 18 people on charges of promoting prostitution and related charges.

Never mind Spitzer, I couldn't care less if the guy was caught jackin off in front of the monkey cage at the Bronx zoo. Would someone please explain to me why with all the problems in this country with Asian Triads, the Russian Mafia the Cali Cartel (to name one) 12,000,000 illigals running around, Al Queda on the loose, and a bazillion other real problems, our government spends money and manpower resources trying to find out who's getting laid and how much they're paying for it. I'm sorry, the old link between prostitution and street crime just doesn't apply when you're talking $5,500 an hour. Investigations of this nature are political motivated fishing expeditions intended to catch someone like Spitzer with his pants down (no pun intended) When the hell are we going to wake up and be like the Europeans who couldn't care less what their politicians do with their sex lives so long as they do a good job of running the city, province, state, country etc. We think of ourselves as the greatest nation on earth and yet we are so preoccupied with sex that we are forever looking like a bunch of church lady prudes to the rest of the world. Can we just accept that men and women have sex and not always with their "legal" partners and move on ? I live my life, you live yours, I go to work, you go to work. You govern, I'm the governed. None of any of that has a damn thing to do with who's doin what to whom between the sheets, in the hall closet, in the backseat of a limosine or whatever the hell.  :soapbox:

So what's the point.  No average person cares what he does with his own time anyway.  As long as he is fulfilling his duties as Governor it shouldn't matter.

The reason for the wire tap that nabbed him as a john was because he was being investigated in a money laundering case since last summer.  It wasn't about a Governor trying "to get some" but about REAL criminal activity.  BTW, he has thumped his chest over the last several years about being NY State's "Top Cop" as Attorney General before being elected Governor.   I think a true leader should have some values.  After all, he's married with three daughters.  That should matter to someone.  He's the biggest hypocrite of them all.

You are correct, I agree with you whole heartedly, there are lots of problems facing this nation that are way more important that who Spitzer is poking his pencil dick into, but that should not disparage the fact that he is a lying, cheating hypocrite. Our government is spending billions on the "war on drugs", and yet in Cal you can buy pot in a vending machine for having a hangnail, this world is full of irony, but "I live my life, you live yours" and we all look away, I think not! how pretentious that would be, to call this the greatest nation on earth, if we dont hold ourselves to the values that we profess.

just heard they're giving him 24 to 48 hours to resign,,,  or they're going to start impeachment proceding.  this whole investigation started as a IRS thing on cracking down on tax abuse.  they found more then they could deal with,, and turned everything over to the FBI.

what a mess.

The guy is a typical rich kid who wanted to save the world and stop bad guys except while excempting his own behavior.  Typical liberal holier than thou, I have money, (inherited type) I have education, and I'll tell you how to live.
Fox just had a media researcher that said not one story on any other channel mentioned that Spitzer was a Democrat and that he was a Super Delegate.  But everyone knows Larry Craig was a Republican.

I think Mrs. Spitzer is either afraid that he is owed favors by every lawyer in NY state and will not help her divorce and or they have a prenuptial agreement to protect his millions.  Estimated worth $500 million.   That's a lot of knob polishing!
They (Feds) also released that he is a frequent flyer at totals over $80K.  He could have had a CVO and picked up chicks anytime and had $40K for beer!  Or rebuild the motor Howie style.

I think many have a problem w/ this 'cause it's a trust thing. He broke a trust w/ his spouse and the rest of his family. I value trust in a spouse, friend, coworker or site member. When it's broken I take it personally. But we have seen politicians at the highest level break those trusts and many forgive and don't forget. But to build a total agenda on a platform and then violate it clearly crosses the line. Good riddance.
