Rain Sock
« on: September 25, 2013, 10:03:29 PM »

I'm looking to see how many use the rain sock and under what conditions. The OM seems to indicate it's only used when the bike is parked, but I tend to think it should be used anytime the bike is in the rain parked or moving. :-\

I didn't even get one. It varies by region and here in AZ we don't get too much rain, so I guess "they" think you only ride near home.

I once had the engine stall while on the highway in a heavy rain. I had to coast to the shoulder. Of course I then remembered to put the rain sock on. It took a lot of attempts to get the engine restarted but once it was going with the rain sock on, it ran just fine in the remaining heavy rain.

After having my scoot start bucking during a fairly heavy rain, I now leave mine on all the time. Don't think it restricts enough air to effect performance and I have got used to the looks.

I use it more when I am washing the bike than when riding since I try to avoid riding in the rain. When I do get caught out in the rain, or think I will be, I put it on. Don't think it affects performance much so leaving it on all the time wouldn't hurt anything.

I never used to use the rain sock, either while riding in the rain, or when washing the bike.  I kind of like the CVO 110 emblem on the air cleaner.  The rain sock just makes it look like any old aftermarket part, and call me shallow, but I like people to see that 110 on the side.  Anyway, we got caught in a very heavy rain a couple of months ago, and the bike coughed so bad I thought it was going to die.  Since then, the rain sock has been on it all the time.  I have found that it does not seem to restrict air flow, and acts as a pre-filter to keep bugs and dirt out which keeps the filter cleaner longer.

I just put mine on when it's about to rain and take it off when I park it in the garage when I get home.  Dry it back off and store it in that little compartment on the inside of the back wall of the tour pack.  I also like the looks of the air cleaner and the 110 emblem.

Only use it in a very heavy rain.  Never had a problem in light or medium rain.  Rode in steady rain for 2 hours straight a few weeks ago with no problems.  Last used the sock spring 2012.

Honey Badger never goes anywhere without her rain sock! I have it mounted behind the chrome cover. As was pointed out, it acts as a prefilter and doesn't restrict airflow. I never have to be concerned with riding in the rain, washing, etc.

Just remembered this.... way back when I wore boots that were not waterproof, I wore rain socks whenever it rained.

Different kind, nevermind.

Thanks Ken, sometimes things can be so simple that we overlook the most obvious solutions!  Took care of it once and for all before our ride this past weekend.

Only in heavy rain.  Otherwise, it inhibits the bike from breathing air.  More air=good.

I have played around with different rain socks on different filter set ups.  I really haven't seen too much difference from one stage 1 to the next.  Until 115 or so.
