Greetings from Upstate NY
« on: May 17, 2007, 09:51:49 PM »

I have been lurking for a while and you guys and gals have been really helpful. A quick official intro. 57 years old. Semi retired. (20 hours a week consulting). Married 37 years, two grown kids, no grandkids yet. Have been riding since 72. I have included a pic of my 77 FLH. It was my Dad's. He is gone now. I've had it for about 15 years. I had to remove some aftermarket lights and bling, but kept it pretty much as he had it. Rode JAP bikes before that. I bought a 03 FLH standard, and an 04 Superglide. Traded them in for a 05 red CVO FL Classic. That was a great bike. I traded it for an 07 SEUC, also red. Not much to do to it. Shorter antennas, some chrome, removed the catalyst from the mufflers. Goes on the Dyno with a PC3 and try to get the rear cyl to run cooler. About 3K miles. Was an early production bike and now I know some things to watch for after monitering this site. I have a 66 Chevelle conv. and some other stuff. I am a subscriber to the "most toys" rule.  Planning to get some touring and camping in this summer. Now I'm even boring myself. Anyway, please keep interest up. This is a great website.

I love the seat and the tour pak is a very interesting shape.   :cherry:

Welcome to the site Tompen!  Great looking rides.

Last time I saw a shovel similar to yours was at the Barber Museum in Birmingham.

Nice looking machine; I had a new blue ’77 Electra Glide. 1977 was the first year for the “Comfort Flex” seat; what a monstrosity. I believe it was around 1982 when the frame mounted seat was introduced; frame mount conversions were very popular as I remember. Funny, but it’s kind of nice to see one that hasn’t been converted. It looks like your machine may have been painted; the color looks correct (from here) but in ’77 the fairing and bags were Birch White.

I have to chuckle looking at your mirrors. These mirror heads were famous for coming loose and rotating on the stem. The head is fastened to the stem with a ¼ x 20 set screw with a 1/8” allen socket head; this coincidently is the same part number for the fastener used with the earlier front axle caps (ask Spiderman). :)  One method that worked pretty well to keep the heads in place was to drill a shallow countersink in the stem with a 5/32” drill bit; even then the heads would work loose; I wonder how a “dab” of RTV would work in that application. :)

Prior to 1982, H-D didn’t have a large tour pack available, so large aftermarket tour-pac’s were common; although I don’t recall ever seeing one quite like yours. The mufflers are OEM and I believe that the extensions are an H-D accessory; although a number of vendors made them. The passenger backrest is an aftermarket offering; Ray-Cad maybe. The OE timer cover has been relocated to cover the slot for the OE passenger foot-peg mount. The side cover around the battery is an accessory; the set came with left and right covers; the cover under the seat is also an add-on. The passenger footboards were a popular aftermarket accessory; I have the same set on my ’78. Kromette gas cap covers; it doesn’t get any better than this; in a crash I understand that it was not unheard of to catch your “privates” on the cap cover as you were being ejected; now that would make your eyes water. :)

Great looking FLH, tompen.

djkak is correct on all counts. The tour pack was aftermarket and designed to hold two full face helmets. The cover opens from the back and won't open with the rear seat back. When Dad had it, it had 2 rear wrap around bumpers lined up with red lights and chrome guards on the tour pack. Chrome went bad over the years. The fairing and tour pack were in fact white. Two choices for plastic parts then, black or white. Paint technology is better now. Actually the fenders are origonal paint. The rest was painted 3 years ago. Runs very nice. Brakes suck. I did move the brake pedal down so it is like the new one.
Thanks to everyone for the warm reception.

Tom,
Welcome to the site. Loads of great info and real good people here. Upstate NY? I grew up in a little northern town called Massena. Any further upstate than that and you were in Quebec speaking French Canadian.

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome. I do like the RED. It sort of shouts at you. My 04 Dyna and 05 SEEG were also Red. I will keep the Shovel the factory blue though. Just seems right.
