detachable windshield
« on: July 14, 2004, 09:36:54 AM »

Hey, have any of you switchblade riders been able to locate a windshield that will fit over the stock headlight fairing?  I have been searching and so far I have had no luck.  I've tried dealerships, Memphis Shades, and some others and have come up with nothing.  If no one at this site knows I guess I'll just have to get one and have it cut out.  If any one can help I'd really appreciate it.  I love my DWG3, but on long rides (with a helmet pulling on my head like a parachute!) it gets less than comfortable.  Thanks for any input.
Stay safe, and ride man, ride!

Hey Tortureking,

One of the best things I added to my FXDWG2 was my detachable windshield.

Hey Buffy,
Thanks for your photos and info that you sent. It really helped a lot.  I've been busy traveling for my job and getting my baby ready for a road trip and I finally finished it off yesterday with the windshield.  I took a short ride last night down I95 and man what a difference!  Between the Corbin seat, the Kuryakyn forward control extensions, Boss Bag saddlebags, and the windshield, I think I'm ready for a long haul, and when I get to where I'm going I can strip this thing down to sport mode in under 2 minutes!!!!  I"m also  really happy with my sissy bar attachment because I got rid of my sideplates (opening up the rear fender area) and I can lose the luggage rack and sissy bar with the ease of 2 screws.  I'll stop rambling now, you'll have to excuse me for being so wound up.  I'm just happy with how it turned out and I wanted to thank you for your input.

Take care, stay safe, and ride man ride!

Hey Buffy,
Thanks for the compliment but I have to tell you I was a bit on edge shaping that thing.  I think the damn force must have been with me or something 'cause it did turn out pretty good! So to answer your questions...

A)  32"---  331/2" with my Frye engineer/harness boot! [smiley=wideeyed.gif]

B)  it is the 3" extension kit, which with my old Badlander seat my reach was just barely perfect.  Now with the Corbin Gunfighter and Lady seat my reach is comfortably perfect. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

C)  the chrome cylinder is a 10" billet storage tube which is good for maps, tools, and stuff you want to keep dry.  Word of warning.... loctite the bottom cap as you will have to buy a less expensive 7" tube to replace the one you lost!!!! [smiley=wink3.gif]

Take care and stay in  touch, maybe we'll meet up somewhere along the way..............

Thanks for the quick response.  I just may have to order a set of the 3 inch extensions......

I'll let you know how it turns out.

Tortureking,

By the way, I have the exact windshield that you have AND the small "sport" windshield.

Believe it or not, there is LESS wind with the smaller shield! -

Thanks to this dicussion group I now have a great detachable windshield for my scooter (the HD dealership said it could not be done). I must say it took a lot of nerve to buy a $600 windshield (e-bay for $320) and put a saw to it, (the wife blew her top) but it turned out GREAT if I do say so my self. I'll post a pic if I ever figure out how to post it. Thanks again for all your help Buffy, and thanks Tourture King, just seeing that some one else did it gave me the confidence I needed. Well bibn8r,

Happy to see that you accomplished all these things at once.
Let's see:
saved marriage =        $30,000

custom windshield =     $1,200

increased confidence = priceless

If your pics are loaded into your computer as a jpg., you can post them rather easily.
whether you start a thread or add to a thread the procedure is rather easy.

Make certain that here is a subject filled into the box if not type one in.

Type in the message body with a description or something that you want to talk about.

Click the browse button.  A screen will pop-up that you need to select the picture you want to post from. Select the picture and click open.  The address will appear in the box next to the browse button.  Once that happens click the post button. Do not hit preview, only hit post.  Hitting preview will never work.  Do not attempt to make it work. Just hit post.  If you are stuck on this.  Ask for more help and we will help you.

How about 8 days at Maggie Valley with 80's during the day and 60's at night and without a DROP of rain! It was HEAVEN!

Spent everyday heading out in a different direction and loved evey minute of it.  Most days were spent in the Great Smokie Mountain National Park and every night was a different restaurant!

What a way to celebrate a new decade!

Can't wait 'till the next gathering there to see all of y'all again!

TK:  Looks great!  On a different subject, do you have the PNs handy for your detachable bag setup?  I love the look of the stock WG3, but I don't have room on it for anything larger than a toothbrush (well, I don't have storage space for anything, actually.)  Love the idea of detachable bags and sissy bar.  Thanks.  kc

They are Boss Bags. Model S31 (means they hold 31 cans of the beverage of your choice in each side!) They have a website...bossbags.com. Call them to speak about luggage rack, sissy bar, turn signal set up. I have the Kuryakan sissy bar mount that runs under the passenger pillion which does not touch the fender strut and exposes the entire rear fender.  The bags are big, solid, extremely well made, come with locks, and when you remove them they have bullet covers to go over the mounting posts so that you can not tell they were even there! I love'em. Oh yeah and they're a lot less expensive than the HD bags.

Buffy,

Sorry, I know you've been through this, but I plan on doing the windshield project this weekend.  Can you be more specific about how you knew where the windshield would hit the visor?  You say you made a cardboard template, and your picture helps, but I am thinking of using the quick release windshield from Harley and it appears to fit a bit differently from the detachable with mounting kit you appear to have used.  Can you give a bit more detail on the making of the template?  In my mind that is the critical piece of this project.

Thanks!

Johnnys_Glide,

It was actually easier than you think.

First, I removed the headlight fairing (easier job than you think!)
Then I took a piece of cardboard and laid it done on a table.
I then placed the trailing edge (closest to the handle bars) of the faring on the cardboard.
Now you can use a pencil to trace the contour of the fairing.
Then I cut out the cardboard.
I took the windshield (with all mounting hardware removed) and taped a VERY wide spot so the saber saw wouldn't scratch it.
I then took the cardboard and laid it on top of the windshield and traced the cutout onto the VERY wide tape.
Working slowly, I cut it with a fine toothed saber saw and finished it off with a belt sander.
Then I added the chrome door edge molding from Pep Boys.

Thanks John,

I appreciate the step by step instructions.  I ordered the windshield and mounting hardware from Liberty North (your hometown and mine) and will actually PAY for it on fathers day weekend so as to get double Harley points.  FYI, the quick release version of the windshield doesn't work as the clips make contact with the headlight cowl.  Be sure and drop me a PM next time you are in town, I would love to show you my ride...it looks a whole lot like yours as you've inspired me on two things now...the seat (but I added the Ostrich on your advice) and now the windshield.  I know, I know...I should post pics, but I don't have a working digital cam right now.

Be WELL!

If anyone wants a template for this job in the future, let me know and I'll send you one.  I have about 1/4" clearance all the way around the fairing.  I saved the windshield cutout, --- and if you're interested, can save you some work.  PM me if interested.

CVO,

Per my PM, I ordered the Compact (Full Height) windshield, HD P#58627-99.  I presume that will be important to knowing the exact cut out.

Thanks again...

Thanks for the clarification.  I just got confused on all the different names Harley has for all the different windshields.  I will get the supersport one as I would prefer to use your tried and true template.  Thanks again!

I'm so glad I found this forum.  I have a FXDWG2 and need a windshield and would liekto keep the fairing as well.
I'm going to order the Sport Windshield Kit for Softail® Custom and Dyna® Wide Glide® Models Part # 91820-85A and cut it out  :orange:

You're absolutely right, lots of info here to both save you money and help you spend even more. I modded a couple of full size WG windshields:

Have thought of getting one of the Super Sport ones as well as I like that look too.

Time and Money - if you have more of one, you can get by with less of the other.

As I recall, I used a coping saw. Be sure to tape off the area and draw the line on the tape so if you slip, you don't scratch the windshield. You can always sand or dremel down any rough spots or cover it with the edge molding in chrome of gold to hide any rough edges.

Hey Guys...
I installed the windshield over the weekend...
The windshield helped out a lot but I think I need something a little bigger for the amount of highway driving I do..
My thought is to get a bigger windshield with detachable mounts...

**Which detachable windshields will fit out FXDGW2 bikes?**

I recently purchased a Fxdwg2, and need a windshield.  I see a number of people mentioned having them.  But I missed the details on models and make.

Thanks
Sam

You can get either of the HD quick release models or the permanent mount that fit the 2001 Wide Glide. You can also get the HD Sport shield. The trick is you have to cut the plexi to fit around the sport fairing if you don't want to remove it.

The way i did it was to remove the fairing, lay the large end on a piece of paper and trace the outline. Put some wide masking tape on both sides of the lower edge of the plexi to avoid scratching thw plexi. Lay that outline you traced on the plexi and trace a line on the tape. With a coping saw, cut just a bit more than the line from the windshield to give a bit of extra room. Smooth the edges with some sanding. I put some door edge molding on mine to spiff it up a bit.

You can see how it looks here:
