Cannonball Bike
« on: August 14, 2014, 10:53:54 PM »

Came into work last night and saw this sitting outside. 1927 Harley Davidson JD.
Jerry who works in our maintenance department is running this in the http://www.motorcyclecannonball.com/
He just finished rebuilding the bike this past week and was out getting a few break in miles. He is bike #109.
Wish the picture was better. (Cell Phone)

He certainly did a fine job restoring that JD  :2vrolijk_21:

Wish him safe travels and good luck in the Cannonball

Yeah I agree. Thats a long cross crountry ride. Why someone would put all the time and money into a nice looking classic like that then beat the crap out of it is beyond me.

I don't know either.
Maybe I should ask myself the question. Why did I purchase a $30,000 motorcycle only to having to put another $5000 into it so it could make it from Florida to Washington without having something go wrong with it?

I have a friend running the cannonball for the second time on a 1928 HD JD.  I wish I had the time and money to do it myself.  It is a contest of man and machine (old one at that) against the world.  It will truly test you and your McGiver-ness to get from coast to coast.  A lot more challenging than an ironbutt.   It is like climbing Mount Everest, you just need to test yourself and your wits to do it.  If I hit the lottery (which I only play 2-3 times a year) I would do it in a heartbeat.

It looks like Jerry (see first post) is doing very well, presently in 13th place.
I did not mention this before. But Jerry is doing this ride with his wife. 2 up all the way. No personal support vehicle.
You just have to love the adventure of this.

Yeah, I saw your friend and his wife pull in yesterday, in Junction City.  I thought what an adventure!  Then I thought of the extra stress it puts on the old bike.   I was talking to a friend at the J City stop and he told me there was another rider that had his wife in a sidecar, but it was to much stress on the old machine going up the steep grades so she had to get out and push.  That night he took the sidecar off and put in the support vehicle as well as his wife.

I hope Jerry has some different sprockets for his bike or his wife may be pushing him over the Rockies.

I agree - with the time and money (mostly the money) I would do it in a second.... :2vrolijk_21:
