A penny works great for getting black marks off of chrome pipes.......use an older Canadian penny 'cause they have a higher copper content.

If your talking about black marks from boots (or plastic shoes like flip flops - don't get me started) then oven cleaner works well for the big messes...

The best I've found are "oops" or "goof off" paint remover from any hardware store. Works great.

Road Rub is great stuff. Hard to find in shops but readily available from Internet sources.

Best thing I've used is SOS pads. And no they do not scratch chrome. They will scratch aluminum though.

On really stubborn spots I have used # 0000 steel wool saturated with WD40.

Never Dull works too...I have a can that I've had for 5 years and have only used a very small portion of it thus far.

Be very, very careful with oven cleaner. It will remove the powdercoat on the engine/transmission if left on too long. There's a member here, and I won't mention any names, that can attest to that first hand.

road rub works pretty good used it for a long time until I came upon this...and it also works to make the white walls white...if your still running whitewalls!!

I use mr clean scrubber as well. If that doesn't work I add a little brasso to it and I haven't found anything that it won't remove. Then buff it off and there is a nice shine to boot.

X2 to the sos pads, I tried it on some old stock mufflers and works great, no scratches!

I've seen it at only two Harley dealers and I've visited quite a few over the years. Don't know why more do not carry it. But then most want to keep more space for the 'quality' moco items I imagine.

SOS or any other steel wool DOES scratch chrome. Try GOOP remover, it's cheap, can be bought at the Dollar Store or Big Lots, get the kind that is safe on plastic and will very little effort it will wipe away black on your heatshields and leave no lasting damage like steel wool/SOS.

When it comes to chrome or aluminium, the best that I have found is Californian Purple Polish here in Australia....I had assumed that it was developed over there in the US....still...it's not even mentioned....by the way, it is non abrasive and awesome, I'm surprised you Yanks are not raving about it...ha ha

The Magic Eraser is hands down the best thing I have found to use on chrome! Using the Magic Eraser combined with Mothers Chrome Polish....there is not anything I have not been able to get off.

Oven Cleaner works better than anything i've ever tried.. Saturate on a rag and dap the boot mark areas, let it set for a few hours and wipe off.. that simple.. DON'T SPRAY THIS STUFF, you dont want any overspray on your paint, it will do damage... if you want to remove really quick,, heat up up the pipes,, i.e. let motor run awhile, then dab the areas,, let set for a few minutes and wipe off..

I had a couple of marks on the pipes that I got on the very first day I got my bike. I still don't know exactly what got on them but I have had professional detailer's try diesel fuel as well as a host of other products to try and remove (you can imagine how pissed I was after seeing it after my first ride!) and nothing worked. After seeing this thread, I went on-line and ordered the Road Rub. The day I received it and before I got a chance to use it I went on a ride and thought I had dodged a plastic bag to find out about 50 miles later that I didn't dodge it and it was stuck to my front pipe (which I couldn't see when I was riding). I pulled off as much as I could (as I burnt the hell out of my fingers) and then rode home to see (pray) if the Road Rub was any good. Not only did it get all the bag off, it got rid of those original marks I had had since day 1.
Amazing product that I couldn't recommend more!!!

I finally put some marks on that I was having trouble getting off. I tried all of my normal items and they did not work. I think this will work with all marks, if not it is worth a try.

After my ride yesterday I got a dry cloth and put on some gloves and rubbed the mark and it came right off. The pipes are not hot enough to burn the cloth, but of course they will burn your hands. Just be careful.

Just get the bike to operating temp and rub them off with a dry cloth. One time I use a piece of wood behind the cloth and scrapped the mark. Just be-careful with the hot pipes.

I've been successful using carb cleaner for years, then using Turtle Wax Chrome cleaner for the insoluble portion, if any. Don't get agressive with the chrome cleaner as you could remove the chrome down to the nickel or copper plate.

Not an HD item, pricey for the size, no sales push etc.
When I first saw it and asked the counter guy if it really works he handed me a sample to go ou tand try. Came back in and bought one.

Works pretty good. If I have something other then just light boot marks I carefully use a razor blade to get the thicker pieces off.

I have also found that my pipes get so hot if I run them long enough (Blowing Rock, NC to Central New Jersey) most of it burns off anyway.

I think the reason you don't see this everywhere is because so many people have so many other methods that they think work great...as evidenced by this thread. I've tried almost all of the other methods mentioned, and Road Rub will be your choice once you use it one time. It works, it's easy, and it does no damage. My local Harley dealer stocks it and so does the local leather and accessories store, so I have no problems finding it.

I have been using bar keepers friend and it makes a little paste with water, that I the use to rub off with the microfiber cloth. I the wipe it off again with a dry cloth and the marks are gone. I had tried the easy off and it didn't work. Magic eraser usually has worked great on other things,I will have to try it on my pipes. My damn boot keeps hitting the pipe, even though I concentrate hard on getting it right up on the floorboard!

I cleaned the pipes yesterday on my SEUC to get boot marks off. I tried GOOF-OFF and it didn't appear to touch the marks at all. Went to a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser with water only and that took 99% of the marks off with just a little rubbing. Used a penny to scrape off the last few small stubborn spots and finished up with the Magic Eraser. The pipes look like brand new again. I was very impressed with the Magic Eraser.

Works like a charm and easy to find both. No scratches either....

I will have to try the Mr. Clean product, however. Reading the posts and from some folks at work, it seems to be the bee's knees in cleaning just about anything/everything.

Ok, Magic Eraser took some of it off. The black from the boots was no problem for that. The melted rain gear however was a different story. SOS pad and water got it after the oven cleaner didn't even touch it. I was working with cold pipes though.

Most of these solutions seem to be related to boot marks or melted rain gear/plastic. What I have a problem with is those little black spots of asphalt that burn on to the mufflers after a road trip. They cover the entire mufflers and are baked on hard as a rock! I can find any solvent that will dissolve them! I don't want to rub on them because experience has taught me that rubbing removes the chrome plating along with the spots. Anyone find a product or procedure that takes them off with out damaging the chrome plating?

You have to look into this yourself..... I Have Never needed to use it , But a friend of mine uses XYLENE to get tar and

asphalt off his bikes and truck(they paved a new road that he travels) He swears by it! Read up on it,it's very potent

I would try WD-40 first

Xylene, I've heard of it never tried it. Will do but proceed with caution. Thanks for the tip. I'll give a report back.

Don't smoke around Xylene or for sure you won't have to worry about the little black spots.
