William Harley and Arthur Davidson grew up together fishing and tinkering with motors.

They eventually tired of long trips to their favorite spots.

So they shifted gears.

Working in the basement of the Davidson home in Milwaukee in 1901, they mounted a motor on their bicycles to speed them on their way.
