Most miles ridden in day?
« on: July 22, 2009, 12:50:16 PM »

Curious to see what the most miles anyone has ridden in a day (one day from getting on the bike in the AM to gettin off it in the PM but on the same day) and on which model if motorcycle it was done on?

I know there are lost of variables....weather, type of bike, splash & dash vs sightseeing, terrain, traffic density, personal stamina etc.... But on the best riding day you have had what is the furthest you have ever ridden? I have read guys that say 850-1000 miles and I say
                                                                    :coolblue:  *cough*bulls**t*cough*  :coolblue:
but at the same time my hat is off to anyone who has done that. For me personally about 650 miles is the max I have gone and that was on non-CVO Road King before I got my CVO SEEG. How bout you?

Eight hundred to a thousand isn't that unusual; I know several people who have done Iron Butts.  So far my longest is 672, but if I hadn't been home at that point I could have stopped for a couple hours and made a thousand.  A thousand is only about 13-14 hours actually in the saddle.

Okay...for the high mileage Iron butt guys how long did it take (number of hours) you to do those miles in that day, if you remember.

Marty,
Here's to you.... :drink: :drink: :drink:!
I missed meeting you and a lot of others at the NW GTG last week in Hood River as I am taking a few xtra days 1st week of Aug to ride to Utah National Parks/4 Corners/Colorado and back so I had to hang close for work. By looking at all the pictures I can see what a great time I missed.
We are looking at one long day (800 miles +/-) on Aug 1st to start the trip so after my return I'll post my new longest distance.

Keith if it is hot be carefull. When it gets over 95 I am only good for 500 miles then I melt. We do a lot of 800-900 mile days on long trips.

Picked up the '04 Pumpkin SEEG in Great Falls Montana, left at 6-6:30 AM, got home to Campbell California around 8:30 PM.  1085 miles to get used to a bike I had never ridden.

I've rode 1,000 miles several times.....on my Ultra Classics and once on the SEEG.  Terrie and I have rode 800 miles days a couple of times.....me on the SEEG.....her on her Dyna once, going to Sturgis and just a month ago when we headed up to Canada, on her Street Glide.

It's not as difficult as you might think......leave at 5:00 a.m.  When you stop for fuel at 150 miles, you drink a little Gatorade, maybe eat an energy bar......oatmeal for breakfast (the breakfast recommended by the Iron Butt Riders Assoc.).  When you stop for gas around noon as you're filling up, she's inside getting the burger or whatever the fast food is (Wendy's, Carl Jr. etc. all have salad bars) so that the meal is ready as soon as you walk in the door.  In the late afternoon you may want to have a 5 Hour Energy with your dinner meal (I used to drink the Red Bull.....till the caffene started causing problems) to help you get over the hump.

By mid day you're already in a rythum and it's "just another 150 miles......just another 150 miles, etc." and those 150 miles start seeming closer and closer together.

I'd not suggest this kind of riding your first day out......it's a lot easier after two or three days of riding.  And it's certainly not sight seeing.......it's interstate freeway riding to get these kind of miles in.

That's similar to what Chip and I did coming from MA (we left at 0530). Only stopped to get gas, bathroom, snack, and stretch legs. I did try for the first time one of those 5 hour energy drinks and didn't get tired. Since this was my first time trying it I had a breakfast bar with it because my stomach was empty and don't know if it was the combination of just the way the energy drank was, but I shared w/Chip that it almost tasted/reminded me of liqour. :nixweiss: Irregardless of the taste it did the job. :2vrolijk_21:

:huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2: Taking it with something.......even a diet soda or gatorade, breakfast bar.....anything......it helps.  It tastes nasty.....but a mouth full of any vitamins (all the B vitamins in a mega dose) tastes nasty.  Now I'd be lieing if I didn't tell you that I like seeing the look on people's face the first time they drink one of those 5 hour energy. :huepfenlol2:   The orange doesn't seem to be quite as bad as the berry.

I get it on Amazon.com by the box, other wise it gets pretty pricey.  Costco has it, too.

Ohhhhhhhhhh.............and so you really do ride a motorcycle? :nixweiss:    I heard that was a myth.          :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:

I did 716 miles on my 2000 Screamin Eagle RoadGlide. It was from Sturgis South Dakota to Tomah Wisconsin. I left Sturgis at 6 A.M. and pulled into Tomah Wisconsin at 8 P.M., It took 14 hours including gas and food stops.

961 miles on a 2003 Ultra Classic, including about 120m in the rain.  Left Rapid City at 5:30a and pulled in the driveway in Des Plaines, IL at 11:05p.  80-85 all the way.  Got up the next morning and rode to Lake Geneva and back (another 105m).  I was 58 at the time...I'd do it again in a minute!!

800-ish is a pretty comfortable day on either of the bikes here now.  But they fit me well and are set up well for that kind of thing.  Longest on either of them is about 1150 in a day.  Longest ever was about 1250 in a day.  Bragging rights go from years ago.  Much shorter day.  About 725 or so.  But on a hardtail.  That's when I was young enough to still think that pissing blood at the end of the day was somehow macho or cool though.

My hat's off to you guys-couldn't go that far in a vehicle with 4 wheels in a day.  Built cheap I guess.

I can't do it in a four wheeled vehicle, either.  Can't tell you why it's easier on a bike. :nixweiss:

I've done one 1000 mile day, documented, and I think it was ~17.5 hours.  I also have done an un-documented back to back 1000 mile days in ~42 hours with 6 hrs sleep in the middle.

It's no problem on these bikes.  Ernie Z, on a new bike?!?  I don't know if Icould have done it!   :bananarock:

OK Chip I'll have two scoops of rocky road!!!!!

1000 plus mile trips are pretty normal if I am on the road and want to get there! Which is all of the time. I usually run in the 80 to 90 mph range as long as the traffic will let me, and I am not in the GREAT STATE of VIRGINIA! They don't seem to have professional courtesy.

Not claiming to have done it, but one of the tougher Iron Butt certificates is 10,000 miles in 10 days.  I know a guy who has done that.

I've been getting it at Sam's lately - they have like a 12 bottle box that knocks it down to like a buck a bottle or so

wish they had this stuff when I was at Officer Candidate School or The Basic School - many late nights this would have helped immensely with

Just did an Iron Butt a couple of weeks ago. 1022 miles. Left at 3:30 AM and got home at 8:30PM----17hrs.  Stopped for gas every 150 miles or so.  You get in the groove and it's not so bad.  But I don't need to do it again!!  Crossed it off by bucket list.

Yea Smuuth....but try explaining that to somebody who doesn't ride.  Kind of like  :wall:  Those of us who ride and ride often totally get it. :2vrolijk_21:

Somebody was having a phone conversation at Mt. Hood.....explaining that these people have rain suits for the rain and cool vests for when it's over 100F (good thing she didn't tell him that Andy had his portable mister with him).  He told her that stuff is for wooses.  I'm betting he hasn't rode 12,000 miles in the past six months.  She went on to tell him.....these people out here don't trailer to events.....not one trailer in the parking lot.....they ride regardless of what the weather is. :2vrolijk_21:

1050 and the first 8 hours in a heavy rain. Rain stopped about 3:30AM, sun came up at 6:00AM and it was smooth sailing from there. Total time was abour 24 hours. Minneapolis to East Texas.

2007 rode from Fresno to Bellingham, WA took us 23 hours and 30 minutes, two of the guys on the trip were on Dyna's and they hated it after about 12 hours in the saddle. 1084 miles, done in the summer and pretty hot, almost passed out from the heat.

We recently rode through Mojave and Death Vally temps around 115 and was like sitting in front of Hair dryer blowing full force at you.  We bought hydration vests from Silver Eagle Outfitters at http://www.coolingapparel.com/shop/vests.htm
and what a world of difference.  Still felt the heat but was a heck of a lot easier to stay in the saddle.

Somehow the Iron Butt guys are making me feel like Richard Dreyfuss comparing his appendix scar to Roy Scheider's Shark Bite scar in the first "Jaws" movie but...

~500 mile from Spearfish SD to Fairmont MN (halfway home to Chicago South Suburbs)  Ran the remaining 485 the next day. On my FXR3.  My brother rode with me.  His first ride on a brand new Sporster 1200 custom.  Talk about Iron Butt! We had to stop about every 125 miles for gas / streatch / food because of the Peanut tank.

915 miles Panama City Fl. to Williamsburg Va. To be honest I have never heard of anyone riding as much or as long as I do until I joined this site..... I was thinking I had issues there for a while :)

I could have done the 1000 miles for the Iron Butt.....but I was home so end of ride.

I have to say the 09 is much more comfortable then the 06 staying in the saddle on these bikes is easier then sitting at this desk :)

A bunch of us have just completed the Iron Butt 1000 miles in the UK, it was hard but achievable, and if you guys have ever seen the state of the roads in the UK you will know that we have some additional challenges like 60 million people on a land mass smaller than Florida, and the joys of the M25 as well! I think I was the only CVO rider.

I also did Windor to St. Tropez in 16 hours (some 860 miles plus a chanel tunnel crossing) that was a real joy compared to the Iron Butt, as the French roads and low traffic levels are a real contrast to the UK.

1070 miles from Spearfish SD to Champaign IL on a 2003 Heritage Soft Tail.

Started at 7:00 AM in SD and finished at 3:00 AM (next day) in IL. The worst part was traveling east crossing time zones and loosing day light. And we stopped for full meals, we should have just snacked to keep moving.

I'd do it again.

Just wondering what your thoughts on all this are, now?  Still the same or have they changed?  Are you planning your first 800-1000 mile ride?

I've only done a little over 700 miles in a day, but I'm not one for riding in the dark.  I could easily see doing 1000 miles with an earlier start and making it entirely in daylight.  Two weeks ago, I got on the bike early on a nice morning and thought I'd go out and fill the tank before waking anyone to see if they wanted to go for a ride.  After fueling up, I decided that I'd go for a little ride myself for a bit and I ended up putting 500 miles on by the time I got home that day.  Nothing like a little casual ride to nowhere.  I don't think I could do any of this without a rider backrest though.

JCZ, to say I am impressed by all you high mileage guys would be an understatement. My riding partner and I are leaving at 5AM on Saturday (Aug 1st) heading for somewhere south of SLC. Provo would be about 760 from here and we figure for sure we'll do 800 miles minimum that day. I was going to post a ride report as we move along the trail and post some pictures too so when I do I'll let you know what we ended up riding.

I was looking back to some trips I made on my '05 Road King and on a trip to LA to see my son I did a 650 mile day, half in pouring rain and half in 30 mph headwinds in Southern Nevada.

Once we get to Southern Utah on this trip and start into Zion, Bryce and Capitol Reef Parks we have the rest of our days planned at about 350-400 miles as we loop back up through Colorado, Wyoming and Montana.......mostly to be able to enjoy the ride and take in the scenery.

Not wanting to start a new thread, I will ask this as an addition to this one.

How many miles have you done 2 up?

My wife seems to do very well in my opinion, she does like to drink a lot of water on the scoot and we all know what that means.........we have to stop more often.
She also doesn't like to ride fast on highways... 80 max.

Anyway....I believe the wife and I managed a ride just under 500 miles last year. I was very impressed with that, most of the riding was done on back roads and some highways.

Not sure if I can expect much more then that, she enjoys riding just not as much as I do.

Funny thing, I have to run down to NC Friday night and I told her I may have to trailer due to thunder storms we may be getting.........she cocked her head to the side and looked at me like I was crazy. She knows I very rarely trailer my bike.

Spent good money on the trailer and never use it.....but I guess at least I have one if I need it.

I think I may have to ride just because of her reaction...... :)

Now, that changes things. With my wife on the back, we are lucky to get 300 miles in. She gets really crabby after 250. things start to hurt and she is fatigued. The fun gets gone then too. So we keep it short when she rides along.

Keith,

Grats on the new high mileage day, but after reading the first post where you said

Quote
But on the best riding day you have had what is the furthest you have ever ridden? I have read guys that say 850-1000 miles and I say
                                                                      *cough*bulls**t*cough*

You did 750 in only a little over 12 hours  :huepfenlol2:   I am thinking you may have hurt some of these guys feelings.   :nixweiss:   :huepfenlol2:

You misse part of the adventure of the journey.  Just two of you riding........no resevations, just wing it.  Now ya gotta turn around and do it again this coming weekend.  Just so you can say you did 800 miles in a day. :huepfenlol2:

But then we all know that half measures avail us nothing....shoot for the 1,000 mile day. :2vrolijk_21:

Not sure how many 1,000+ miles I have ridden in a day - never counted.  On long trips we usually hit 700-800 miles or more as long as we feel ok.  Burning as much daylight as possible, usually.

The longest I ever documented (gas reciepts/witnesses, etc.) - by both Long Distance Riders & Ironbutt were 2 back to back days:
1,210 on the 1st day & 1,195 on the 2nd day - total of 2,405 miles in 47 hours.  Jacksonville, FL to San Diego, CA.  Started out in the rain but first day only.  Great ride.  Round trip that week was just over 5,300 miles & a lot of fun!
Link to my 50 CC Ride

Last year did 4 rides that were 500+ miles in less than 12 hours - longest of those was 665 miles and the total for that day was 947 miles (16 1/2 hours).

Longest 2 up day - about 600 miles and quite a few with my BSR that are 500+.

I know Anne & I did 775 to Maumee, OH in 2007...I think that wa our longest two-up.  Then on to St. Cloud the next day for another 625.....then to Glendive, MT for another 550 but we were down in Jamestown, ND for about 4 hours, total of 2050...but that was when we were having problems after South Bend, IN.  Blown Throttle Position Sensor(TPS) and other sensors finally fixed in Billings....which was our original destination after 3 days.

When you are cruising past the Roosevely NP on I-94 in the middle of nowhere with the sun setting and the bike is shutting down it is very nervewracking...every mile felt like five!

From Glendive to Billings I probably had to keep the bike at 50mph to avoid loss of power from the fault TPS.

you guys have easy rides - big country, no borders ...

In small, good old Europe, it's quite difficult to find a place more than 1.000 miles away  :D

We did it once, because of an urgent recall from my office - Dubrovnik => Dresden, some 1.500 km (a little less than 1.000 miles) in 20 hours - it was no fun.

I schedule not more than 300 miles/day and that's easy, nice and fun.

That long ride wouldn't be one I'd look forward too either.  Here we can count on long stretches of adequate roads and plenty of services.  Dubrobnik might be the gem in Croatia's crown but the roads to get to that top aren't my idea of a good time.

If anyone is interested in documenting their long rides, here are a couple of places that offer certification:

Link:Long Distance Riders
LDR offers certification for rides of 500 miles all the way up to Coast to Coast rides (USA) and also offers 2 rides for those who use the metric system (most of the world)

Link:Ironbutt Assoc.
IB certifies rides from 1,000 miles & up as well as a variety of rides around the world.

Well now we are in Steamboat Springs after riding the Silver Thread Byway (South Fork to Gunnison after Durango-Pagosa Springs-Wolf Creek Pass) instead of the Million Dollar Highway out of or overnight in Durango last night. As of getting off our trusty steeds tonight at 5:30 (Pacific) we are at a total of 2160 miles since 5AM Saturday.
We crossed four 10,500 ft passes (one at 11.500) and the Continental Divide 3 times today. Be in Jackson Hole tomorrow and Missoula on Thursday. I'll have a ride report and some pics to post later over the weekend.

Im gonna get some patches next year!!!

That sounds like a lot of fun!  Hope I get too ride more next year too - so far this year has been less than usual.

On that Coast to Coast Ride, between LDR & IB, I got so many steenkin' patches & pins that I don't have anywhere left to put them as far as vests go.   ;D

No mileage record breaker here, I did 300 miles last Saturday on my Buell 1125R. I definitely choose the wrong bike to ride that day. :'(

I have no plans on ever going 1K miles in a day.  I ride for fun and that does not sound like fun to me.  500 to 600 is the most I will ride before stopping for the night.  I don't need to prove, even to myself, that I can sit on a bike for 24 hours.  Good for you though, if you really enjoy that kind of riding. :2vrolijk_21:

I've ridden over 1k 2 different times.  One tip I can share is that you have to do 90-95mph to keep up with a cager that is doing about 70-75mph.  The extra stops on the bike are necessary but it sure does slow ya down!

I have done  1000+ mile days but our troup leader Dave visiting from Australia makes my rides look like a ride around the block.
He is about half an hour off completing a ride from Seaside near Portland to Charlston SC in approx 48 hours, i think thats over 4500 miles (unbeleivable but correct) He is on a Kawasaki. A huge ride no matter what you are riding

Has your buddy been to the states that many times that he wanted to see how fast he could ride coast to coast?

 How many traffic tickets?

What was the average speed?

That log looks to me like a 30 day log.  4500 miles in 50 hours is an average of 90 mph.  No way is someone going to do that.  1 cops stop will ruin your average, and you'd have to be doing over 100mph to make up for gas stops.

Been years, but went from the Midland-Odessa airport west of Dallas to Baltimore in under 24 hrs.  Someplace about 1700 miles.  Much less traffic and it wasn't a Harley.  You could get out in the less populated areas and run pretty good.  Of course, 125hp and 600# made it fun!
