floor jacks
« on: January 31, 2018, 10:34:04 AM »

lots of floor jacks out there but I used to have one that would allow all four wheels to oscillate.  Does anyone know of a model like that or what are you using that you like?

The J&S is a nice unit, i had one but I now use a Pitbull because of the "table" that allows the bike to be rotated while lifted. This makes it better for me, I can sit on a creeper stool and spin the bike as I clean/detail. The J&S is just as good of a lift (no better IMHO) but does not offer the roller bearing supported table.
I have noticed several lately on Craigs list here local, might check that. Back to your original thread topic, I know of none with 4 pivot wheels but they have the pivot wheels at Home Depot, Harbor Freight etc if you really want them.
That being said, I have not seen the Pitbull guys at Daytona for awhile, R they still in business?

I found no real use for the pivoting table as I can roll around it on my Snap-On work seat.  DO NOT buy the Harbor Freight version.  It's a pile of crap.  The flex in it is unsafe.

Have you actually used the pivot table? You can turn the bike so YOU are always on the side without the jack. Makes you closer and bike more accessible. Rolling me around the bike never achieves this. No comparison for me. And as I said I at one time owned both but sold the J&S after using the spin table on Pitbull.

I would have trouble spinning the bike on the table in my garage.  Don't think I'd have enough space for it.  Do you have a pic of it or a link to yours?

I agree.  I have had one for five years and love it.  Watch their videos on utube or their website.     Great people at a small company in Wisconsin.  You can buy one at their plant near Appleton and save shipping

Depends on how much $$ you want to spend and what you use it for. My Sears Craftsman $89 jack works perfect for myself and friends....

Hard to believe J&S is asking $500 for their lift.  I've used both Pitbull and J&S, and I like the Pitbull better; it comes with the T-Handle, the one-piece locking device, and a foot pedal to lower the lift.

Much more convenient to lower the Pitbull while standing (with J&S, you have to kneel to release the bottle jack) and to engage/release both of the lock arms simultaneously with one hand.

and to engage/release both of the lock arms simultaneously with one hand.

this i'm not following.  the lock arms are easy to engage or disengage.  esp. engage.  flip them over, however you want whether it be with one hand, one per hand, one per hand and foot, whatever....  and then as you jack it up, they will go into a lock slot.  jack it up further, and they go into the next slot.  until you reach the top.  to disengage, you just have to pump it up a little to release pressure, then you can flip them up, again, however it floats your boat to do so.  then when you release the valve on the jack, it slowly lowers to the ground.

i do no have to do any funky gymnastics to do so   :nixweiss:

Skratch is pretty spot on.... But whatever floats your boat.  I also like that J&S is built in the US.  (Wisconsin).  It's a very high-quality product, so you get what you pay for.

I have the pitbull for 17 years. Changed the bottle Jack once. Also the screws which hold it to floor will rust out occasionally and need replaced. I think the actual thread in the frame is shot this time as a new bolt feels stripped out already. See how good the lifetime warranty is if I can find the original receipt!

This was the video comparison that sold me on my J&S Jack.  It's a head to head comparison between J&S and Pitbull and some other POS...

Thanks for posting that video, dm.

I'm in the market for a better lift even as my cheap one has reached the end of life (hey, it was only $89 bucks on sale....) but it was cheap and in the video mine reminds me of the Harbor Freight unit...time for a change/upgrade.

I'm going J&S.  I like everything about it and the video comparison sold me.  Now onto the quest for the best price.... ;D

A point I would make about the J&S jack I use, is that it has a smaller footprint for those of us with space limitations. I store mine vertically against a wall when not in use. I'm sure the Pitbull unit would be fine, but I went with the smaller size...

Thanks for the suggestion, OBB, but I don't do da bookface.... ;D

Actually, a member here has offered their used J&S for a fair price....considering that option.

I did find that the J&S website offers free shipping at $499.  If you go to Amazon, J&S offers the same jack for $470....with $59 for shipping.  Cheaper to order it from the main site....hmmmmm

 :2vrolijk_21:
I don't know what Pitbull makes right now, so this might be what's available new, and I'm working with out-of-date info.  Two things I noted: That video is a pure infomercial, probably made by, or for, J&S.  Second, I've never used a Pitbull that was like the one in the video--the one I've used is much different and built much better.

The big plus about having all four wheels oscilate is that you can move the bike any direction you want both horizontal to you or perpendicular, if you catch my drift.  Great for moving bike around garage thru space that wouldn't accomodate moving it horizontally.

Just pulled the trigger on the J&S jack with the oil tray etc. Just seemed like the right way to go. Price was fair.

Not taking any chances with the new ride.

The J&S is the only jack I've used that didn't make my butt pucker when I put my Ultra up on it. It also works on Dynas without adapters.

Ended up tapping out frame holes to next size up and new bolts. Just holds it from sliding around on floor when working.
As for feeling good when on the lift. 18 years and no straps. Rotated on table top you have to watch the rear tire as it swings around. Doesn't hit anything when lifted to top position and Jack moved around easy in either position. But I just like to keep an eye on it. I recommend the pitbull but have never seen the other in person so do t know how they compare.

So I used my J&S today to do my Primary, Trans, and Crank Case oil changes for the season in my garage.  The piston on the jack seemed to have failed, although it may be partly my fault.  Not sure if it had enough hydraulic fluid in it.  Was a bitch to get it back down.  900 lbs comes down in a hurry if you don't do it right.  We figured it out but man that was a butt puckering moment!  Just ordered a replacement bottle jack from J&S.  Not taking any chances.   Glad all fluids are done along with spark plugs and K&N air filter element.  Maybe a bit excessive as it only has 4500 miles on her and I did the first service at 1000 at the dealer.  Not paying $350 plus tax to have someone else over tighten my plugs.  Felt great to do it myself...   :apple: :pineapple: :pepper:

So I ordered my replacement bottle jack from J&S today and apparently, it's failure was not related me at all.  J&S said they have been dealing with many issues like mine and have switched to a different bottle jack.   The regular bottle jack costs about $41 plus shipping but if you have the air/hydraulic version, that bottle jack is $130.  They don't manufacture their own so that sucks...

If you have a J&S jack, you may want to contact them and give them your serial # to see if yours may be a potentially affected unit.  You won't notice the problem raising the bike, bringing it down is where I had my issues....
