Title: End of year wreck--Darn !!!
Post by: pado on December 31, 2008, 02:21:26 PM
While waiting to go to work yesterday I decided to take advantage of the 70 degree weather and just warm up the bike.  Only went about 10 miles and was almost home when a cage hit me broadside on the right.  She said she didn't see me.  Thank goodness I'm not hurt and I never dropped the bike.  The front right crash bar and lower bent into the tank.  The right rear saddlebag guard was bent snapping off the right rear bag.  Other than that I'm OK thank the Lord.

Need some input on tricks to get this repaired ASAP with the least amount of hassel.  Her fault and her ins. co. will pay.

Frank, this is horrible.  So glad you are OK, and you kept the bike up.  Get-R-Fixed soon and forget it.

Dude... sorry about the accident.  Glad you were not injured.  You are a lucky man.

I would just tell her insurance company that you are taking it to the HD dealer of your choice and they will order and install all new HD parts.  That's really about the only option if you want to put the bike back original.

I would NOT do the repairs yourself.

Take it to your local HD dealer and tell them you want EVERYTHING, AND I MEAN EVERYTHING fixed like it was new!

Glad you are OK - was a cell phone involved?

That slick copper may be a bear to match from the factory too, be patient.

Boy that sux but glad you're not hurt (are you sure???)

There are soooo many little and big parts that can get nicked up and are easily overlooked. Get as many eyes checking it out as you can. Then have a dealer you trust do all of the repairs.

Best of luck.

Got as far as "a cage hit me broadside" and had images of swaddling covering everything but two fingers slowly tapping on a keyboard.  You got hit by a car and are ok.  That's all that matters.

The other's insurance company is going to pay out on a motorcycle wreck that doesn't involve personal injury.  They're going to be jumping for joy.  Getting the bike fixed however you want won't be a debate they're interested in.  The dealer has to order the painted parts anyway.  Sounds like it's all bolt on.  Let them get the parts and bolt the stuff back together.

Pado, so sorry to hear of your accident. That really rots, but thank goodness you're uninjured! I assume that she wasn't going very fast (but fast enough). The main thing is that you're OK. Take your bike to the dealers and have them fix it up for you so that you can get back out there as soon as possible.

Wishing you a very happy and safe New Year!

Sucks to bend metal but better that than broken bones. Bike can be fixed, glad you are not hurt and did not go down! Time to lobby for a second bike while this one is getting repaired!

Sorry to hear....

I went down in Sept and the painted parts have just arrived last week for my '07 Jester.
the front fairing, left lower, left saddle bag & lid + gas tank took over 12 weeks to get.

From the way I understand it, HD only paints the SE parts in batches when they get enough orders to make it worthwhile  :nixweiss:

Good Luck & make 'em pay....

Really glad your ok
Painted parts take the longest to get in. Order them NOW even if you have to pay a deposit to get the ball rolling.  They can take 4-6 weeks.  Have the dealer handle the repairs as you never know what else needs fixing once they get into it.

Frank,

Sorry to read of this event however the good news you are in good condition.  A bike can always be repaired or replaced but not always the riders.

How do you get broadsided by a cage... and not go down??? :nixweiss: :huepfenlol2:I believe that would qualify for a miracle!  :2vrolijk_21: praise God your OK! Look at it this way, at least it happened during the winter and should be ready to go before spring. Glad your OK, God Bless!

Wow!

Glad youre OK pado!!

The miracle is in being hit and not going down, and not having any injury to your right leg!

Count your blessings... SOMEONE was watching over you.

I'll agree to let the dealer do the estimate... engine guard damage that severe may also mean damage to the frame at the mounting point. If they say to replace the frame then hell, its someone else's dime.

Absolutely agree with the frame inspection.  I'm personally aware of several instances where a bike just being dropped on the engine guard, either off the jiffy stand or just dropped...dropped caused some degree of frame damage.  You'll want the dealer, or someone qualified to do so, mic the frame angles and dimensions on the downtubes as well as checking the neck bearing for binding.

I would think that a wreck of that magnitude would result in new neck bearings along with upper and lower trees, etc.

Frank,
I'm sorry to read that you got hit. Glad you are okay! I don't now how you didn't drop the bike, had to be help from above.
The good Lord had to be watching over you. Take the bike to the HD dealer of your choice and tell them to go through it with a fine tooth comb and check everything out, the let the insurance co do the worrying. Don't sign anything until you are completely satisfied that all is well. God bless and have a Happy New Year!

Someone was watchin out for ya bro.  The bike is secondary.  I remember my accident, so I know that is not how you feel.  But mechanical can be fixed.  You cannot.  Make sure you get checked out real good.  My problems did not present for 10 years.  Although I did a header and came off my ride.  Just think now you have an excuse for some new stuff.  Best of luck Randy

Pado,

Take the bike to your dealer of choice. Don't walk... run!

Have the dealer do an estimate of repairs to present to her insurance company. DON"T let her insurance company's adjuster handle this. Your dealer will work with you to make sure everything is done right. This might take a little longer, but your bike will be as good as new when you're done.

My wife and I have both had crashes in the last two years and the dealership is the only way to go. There are just too many things that need to be checked for anyone else to do it.

Just my $0.02 worth.

Boy oh boy are you lucky!!  Blessed is more like it.  Like you say, thank the Lord you are alright.

I'll 2nd the posts that say take it to a dealer to make everything like new, and have them provide a loaner while repairs are being made.  The ins co should be delighted to do this given the potential for bodily damage.

Again, thank God for your New Year's gift of life.
