Antennas - What Side?
« on: August 13, 2014, 08:37:21 AM »

I read on another forum that the CB is on the left.  Mine is on the right.  That's not to say that the dealership put it together the right way.  I'm on vacation with my bike and I left my shop and owner's manuals at home.  Which goes on the right and left? Thanks.

Historically the CB has been on the right, and the AM/FM on the left, as viewed from behind the bike.  According to the parts diagram for the 2014, that arrangement is still correct, left AM/FM, right CB.  If you know someone with them mounted the other way, you may want to tell them.

When you remove the original antennas you will find extremely small CB and AM/FM on the side base area of the original antennas. I used a flashlight to illuminate so I could see the markings.

My bases are the way Jerry stated.  Like scott said, the markings are on the antenna mast and can be easily put on the wrong side.

There is a marking on the base of the antenna that tells you what it is for. The CB antenna is marked, "CB." It is on the right side.

This is a common problem with the dealers.  They arrive without the antennas installed.  Mine was wrong and so was my friends bike.  The CB is on the right as looking from the rear of the bike.

Does it effect the operation of either the CB or the AM/FM to have them reversed? Is the antenna specific to CB or AM/FM?

Yes, the antennaes are different.  Screw one off and they are marked cb or fm in small letters at the bottom of the stem of the mast.

The dealer here got it right. What suprises me is that the FM ant. cable is more like the screw down connector you would expect on a normal CB but the CB cable is just a wire on a ring butt connector. I was expecting something more substantial unless the signal is brought in on the road side and passed over to the curb side via some sort of wiring you don't see under the plastic and the small wire is some sort of ground. There isn't going to be much of a grounding plane for the antenna hanging off the back of the tour pack on a bike made mostly of fiberglass except for the frame, engine, tank, and finders. I guess I may be putting too much thought into this, force of habit being an old retired U.S. Navy comm guy.
