Title: Heated Grips
Post by: jpswino on October 31, 2014, 01:48:58 PM
Never even thought of such a thing on a motorcycle until I got this 2015 CVO SG.
I guess this is not part of the SG? Or am I just blind to how it operates?
Somebody inform the chopper guy about this luxury please.

For $37K the SESG should have heated grips but they don't.  Either put on the Harley brand or Heat Demons.   Neither are an easy install.   Make sure you like the bars before going with heated grips.   No use doing it twice.

I agree!  and actually, if you look at the specs in the HD catalog, it states that the CVO SG has heated grips and passenger floorboards, but the bikes come with neither!  It appears that the HD marketing team copied the text from the SERG specs and put them on the SESG page.  I had to buy both already.

They do not come on the Road Glide Custom either, only on the Road Glide Ultra.

Okay, that's where the confusion is !!!! I keep reading that I have heated grips but for the life of me could not see or find how they operated. I don't feel quite as dumb now........... ;D

HD Heated Grip failure is very common. After two or three sets, most folks go with the Heat Demons. I prefer the Heat Demons as I can choose the grips I like. And once installed, I can change grips if I want to.

True that.
I've owned 4 Harleys that had OEM Harley-Davidson heated grips now since 2004.
NOT ONE of those heated grip sets lasted beyond a few months. Not one.
I love this brand and its history, and I love the product, but I can't help the feeling that sometimes WE are the ones being taken for a ride...

I thought Harley had finally sorted this problem.!,,, I know many had problems with these heated grips from years up to 2011, as they had more returns than sales and even the hd parts guys weren't recommending them!!

Anyone got issues with them from model years 2011 onwards?

I am thinking of having them on my new streetglide, but one things for sure I can't stand the 2015 "triangular" shaped "cheese grater " grips they don't even match the floorboards.
No if I have them I will put on last years heated slipstream grips, they match better and are a lot more comfy.

I put a set of the rumble collection grips on my 2012 when i purchased the bike and they still worked great when I traded it on my 2015.  I also added the new matching heated grips to this bike

I must be an exception.  Have had HD heated grips on the last three ultras (first ones I installed myself last two came stock) and have had no problems.  Current 2013 CVO ultra has 15k miles and almost two years old still working fine.  Just luck I guess.

I bought a pair of Heat Demons but never put them on. I gave them to a friend, who still hasn't put them on either.

Apparently there would be some reaming needed on my Chubbys 575 bars that I didn't want to do, and I didn't want to to go into the bars again anyway.

I use Gerbing heated gloves when needed... but these days if it's cold enough to needed heated gear, it's too cold for me to enjoy the ride anyway.

When I was getting my accessories put on at the dealer before I picked up my ride I asked and wanted heated grips installed. The stealer did everything they could to talk me out of it. Telling me how bad the Harley heated grips are. I guess I would have been in there for repairs/replacements more than the sound system....lol. They did. I wear Gerbing heated gloves now. They are not so bad and do keep you warm. I remember that back in 2011 there was a member here that got a CVO SG WITH heated grips factory installed. I think if I remember they where put on by accident at the CVO plant in York, P.A.

Just out of curiosity, what type of heated harley grips are you guys installing? All of the ones in Harley's catalog say, " not for internally wired handlebars". If you want the CVO internally wired grips like whats on the SERG, get ready to pay up. My dealer quoted some ridiculous price. Each grip was priced individually. I think it was like $350 or so for the right and $ 150 or so for the left. They also did not seem very confident that they could be installed on the SESG. They said something about different bar diameters. Anybody know if it can be done?

The grips have always had that note about not being wired internally, and yet Harley has been wiring them internally on CVO's since 2006.  And they are the same grips as those in the catalog.

I ordered the parts from the 2015 CVO Ultra for my new CVO Street Glide. THey plug right in. All the wiring for them is on the bike. Harley even put the correct connectors on the bike to make them plug and play. They are a bit on the spendy side, but work well and are internally wired. Most of the HD heated grips are made so you can only run the wires externally.

Oh ya...my Heat Demons quite working today......don't know why yet.

When I first installed my heat demons they would not work due to a defective left heater. The controller would not light up or anything. The left grip has an electronic component glued to the inside of it. I was getting power to this component but not through it. I called Heat Demons and was told that it was a fuse that would blow if things got too hot. In other words some type of "heat fuse"? Heat Demons replaced the defective heater and all is well.......for now.

Are you saying the new 2015 CVO street glide has all the wiring for the heated grips already in them, just with a plug at each end, is that the case buddy?

sounds like they should have done this years ago and the labour charge should be cheaper as they do not have to go into the bars to fish wires through.

This was NOT the case for the 2011. The wiring harness had no connections or plugs in for the heated grips or the AUX lamps. A wring harness had to be made for the AUX lamps. Then the same would have had to be done for the heated grips. Ish. If the wires and connectors where in the harness I would install the heated grips. I THINK the 2012 CVO SG did come with the plugs ready to go in the harness.

I am on my third set of HD grips on the SGSE3. Had the first set fitted at delivery, they lasted three months, second set failed and were replaced just before end of two year warranty, and now on third set which are now a year old and functioning ok.

Great, hopefully this last set should last you! :nervous:

Anyone had a set of these heated grips fitted on say a 2011/12 bike and had no problems for going on 2 years?
Just want to find out the longevity of these grips, and maybe the later production grips are of a better quality I hope!! :D

The 2015 grips still need to be threaded through the left hand bar. The power wire is by the left fork leg with the correct connector, and the right side is all wired and the correct connector is taped under the infotainment. You still have to lift the inner fairing to make the connections and to pull the left side wiring through.

The 2012 Had only the throttle sensor wiring. I had to run power to the fuse box and change the plug on the throttle sensor to make them work...

And yes My 2012 grips were never replaced. They worked as good when I traded it in as when I put them on. Most of the time I never turned them above setting 2

Never had a problem with my heated grips on my 06. Problem now at 70,000 miles, the rubber inserts are tacky to the touch and the chrome is starting to wear off the grips.  Looks like I will wear them out before they stop working.   Do I have to refish new wires when I replace them?

Mine are installed and working fine.  Just in time for the first freeze!  They are the CVO grips from HD.  Wire through the handlebars.  I do notice that the left grip warms up quicker then the right, but not a big deal.

Does anyone know if the heated hand grip kit #56100107 will work on a 2016 CVO SG. They look the same as the grips on the CVO Limited but a lot cheaper than the individually priced grips.

They will work just fine....if you install as per the directions.

If you want to run the wire internally on the left side of the handle bars you will need to make some modifications to the left grip
1) Cut off the fuse block because it is to big to slide through the bar
2) Cut a channel in the grip end so the wire will not be pinched in the grip clamp when tighten down by the switch box.
I did this on my limited and softail with little difficulty.

The last ones I installed on my CVO Street Glide and  Road King, I ran the wire on the outside as per the instructions....I just ran the wired under the switch box and wire tied along the clutch cable. Not noticeable at all.

Also, no need to run wire to battery.  Just tie into the  P&A  circuit

If you get stuck please feel to PM me.
