Yaffe Bagger Nation 10" Monkey Bars on FLHXSE anyone?
« on: August 29, 2010, 09:08:39 AM »

Checked out Paul Yaffe at Full Throttle in Sturgis and really leaning towards the 10" Monkey Bars. Anyone installed Yaffe bars on the CVO Street Glide?

Not interested in other brands just Yaffe.

Ordered a set to my specs.   :bananarock:

Contemplated this order since May.  Issue I have is that the MBB is a strong looking bar that could look to aggressive when compared with the overall front end and softness (nicely speaking) of HD parts.

I've spent a long time speaking with PA to discuss the best option for me / bike.

I want the MBB to sit below the fairing and not up in the air.  Plus most of my riding is fast country (England lanes) riding and did not want the high-up ape look and ride.  8" will work with stock cables or so PA tells me.

Ordered a set of custom 8" Monkey bars around 4 weeks ago and still have a few weeks to wait.  I have a plan to makeover the front bars, moustache and headlight.  Will report back soon.   :2vrolijk_21:

Awesome the 8 sounds good using all the stock connections, gets me wondering where that will wind up in relation to the fairing mirrors?  I really like the MBB styling and everything else I look at doesn't call to me?

I am trying to decide between the 10 and the 12 I want to keep the fairing mirrors, Personally Just don't care for bar mirrors.

I would like to be able to sit on a bike with each bar then it would be a quick decision. Definitely not a tall ape fan at least today? I really like the look of the 10, but if the 12 is just above the fairing I can live with that if it helps the mirrors. I am going to out Heat Deamons in them anyway. After all the years on Softails having my hands in the wind isn't a concern for me.

I have a custom Corbin seat on order and I really want to see where that puts me before I change the bars.

Looking forward to pictures of your install

I have a corbin solo like a few others have.  It placed me an inch higher initially.  We've just returned from a 3800 mike round trip from London to Malaga, Spain and have to say that the bike's bars and seating position is now perfect.  It's dropped back to stock and a little further back - best seat of all times IMHO.  I'm sort of in two minds whether or not to change the bars.  Part of me says no.

Problem is that I have a spiced rum inner fairing one week away from delivery, a set of the MBB's, new mirrors, lights etc etc and it's either a re-sell or I just do it.

The 8" will keep stock cables, but you will lose the fairing mirrors.  The position of the 8" is just above the top of the speaker.

I'm fully expecting the bike of my dreams or a complete mess making exercise to the tune of £3k.

Cheers

Like Nike's slogan says "Just do it!" I am sure you'll love it.  :2vrolijk_21:

Glad to hear you like so many others love you Corbin I like yours better as I got the Dual Tour but the BSR wanted Heat too! Gotta keep her happy!

If I recall correctly you taller than I one of my concerns is the shorter pullback on the MBB I'm vertically challenged at a 31 inseam and 32 inch sleeve.

However as I sit and imagine it seems the higher position actually closes the gap some? I'm going to do it regardless it's the only way to know for sure.

We hope someday to go to one of the European Rally's maybe I'll get to see your's in person some time  :nixweiss:

Your right.  I'm 6'5" and have ape arms.  Keeping close to stock feel is important, but having them a few inches higher and further away will help.  I see on the inside back cover of American Iron in either July or August there's an advert of a mustang seat on a Street Glide in burgundy.  The guy's not huge and the bike has the 12 MBB - looks nice with the kury lights and a few mods.

European tours are the way to go.  Get your bike shipped here if and when, use my place as a base and head out  :2vrolijk_21:

I'm with you, the proof is in the pudding and given the amount of time I've been thinking about it there's no choice but to go for gold.  Expect pictures early October unless someone here want's to come for a trip and replace the inner fairing and bars for me??

Cheers,

Not interested in other brands just Yaffe.

YES and I absolutly love them...
I have them on my 09 S/G
They (hand grips) come up just above the speakers housing...
just the look I was seeking...I didn't want anything above the fairing since I ride in the winter time...
I didn't want the 10 575's since I felt they would be a bit short so I opted for the 10" PYO Monkey bars, which actually measure closer to 11"...I also felt that I wanted the additional 30* angle built in the rise of the bar...
if you go to his site there are several pics there that have all the various heights of the bars in comparison to where they will sit on the inner fairing...
here's another link and on the 2nd page you'll see there are several pics from various angles...
http://www.hdforums.com/forum/touring-models/494823-pyo-monkey-bars-finallyyyyyyy-2.html
Also for what its worth I went with 4" over on my lines...Could have gotten away with 2" on the brake line and 4" on the clutch...The wires on the right side was the most time consuming out of all I had to do...
paul
Also If you want a set of 10" chrome I know where 1 set is so you won't have to wait...

Those are the same height as mine...So I would have to say YES they are the 10"...
Get ahold of DCCDFW.com and tell him I sent you...He has 2 sets, one 10" and either 12" or 14" on his rack...
enjoy

ordered them today they shipped today from directharleyparts.com 319.95 shipped I purchased the 12.5 " MBB-125-c
I liked the 10" but was afraid I would lose the fairing mirrors and don't want to. Besides the majority of posts I read users stated over and over I wish I went one size up? if they had 12's they wanted 14's if they had 14's they wanted 16's so I figured what the heck go for it!

Please excuse my next question due to niavete,

What is the purpose of those?

I realize how stupid that question may be, considering all the other stupid stuff  we put on our bikes.
after all it is a bagger

looks?
fit?
handling?

To my eye it looks like it puts your hands in direct weather (no bat wing protection) and not sure it is better for handling,
so that leaves looks and Fit

Hey Wheels, do you know what all is needed to go with 10"s MBB's?  Are new cables and wiring required?  If so, what length?  I am wanting to do this, but I wanna swap out to stainless lines if needed.

Thanks,

I'll admit I went with 12.5" monkey bars mostly for looks and fit. Looks is personal taste, and needs no further comment.  8)
As for fit, I have a pretty shabby back, and having my arms up at shoulder level is more comfortable, for me, on longer rides. With the stock bars I get cramped in my lower back.
Hands are exposed to the wind - a pro in the summer, a con in the winter

BUT - The truth is I was amazed at the improvement in handling, which I didn't expect, but which is actually consistent with the physics of counter-steering. The angle of leverage is greater, so on slow or sharp turns - or quick swerves - you have more force on the handlebar. I imagine true ape hangers, where you're reaching up above the shoulder line, might incur some other physics, and it becomes "pull steering" instead of push steering.

Fish
I have the 10" n my09 S/G and had no problem using the stock wires...No additional wiring are required...However with that said I would if I new then what I know now I would add the extra length of wiring to the existing wires to allow the connectors to sit and lock into the factory supplied locations rather then have them relocated else where...
cable are a different story...I understand that the stock cables will work but I know of no one that has confirmed this...I ran 4+ on all the lines and if I had to do it again I would opt for the +2" on the brake and the +4" on the clutch...I went with the polished S/S cables that magnum offers...
Really looks nice...
I have all the wires run internally which the right side is just a pain in the a$$...But it is do-able...Just be patient...
If you have ABS then you will have to have the dealer hook the bike up to some kind of unit and bleed the brakes which will allow the ABS feature to kick in...However you can bleed the brakes just like you would normally do and all will be fine you just wont have the abs feature, but it will stop just the same...Cost should be .5-1.0 hr labor for the ABS brought back on line after the system has been bleed...
best of luck in your enterprise undertaking...

Thanks for the info on this.  I'm not sure that I am up for all this, but if I paint my inner, it would only make sense.  Now, the question, how will my wife feel about this?  LOL!

I've decided to go with at least the 12.5" bars.  Likely from the same online seller as you too.  Have you found out what size cables/lines are needed?  Thanks Wheels

Not exactly I ordered the Monkey Bagger Bars and they sent OEM Monkey Bagger Bars (Road Glide) So I have to get them exchanged.  >:(

I emailed them yesterday no responce I am about to call them. I can tell you holding the 12.5 OEMS up there they seem shorter than expected?  :nixweiss:

So I am glad I at least went 12 I have had some PM's saying they clutch and brake cables need to be 2" and 4" longer but will wait till I get the correct Bars and measure myself.

Nice seat and back rest wheels.  Following JCZ's recommendation I ordered a similar set-up and love it.   Looking forwards to seeing the bars :2vrolijk_21:

I love my Monkey bars! I will tell you once you order them don't hold your breath! Mine took 4 months to get. I ordered them in mid February thinking I could put them on before riding weather was here. Finnally came at the end of may and did not give me the correct brake line parts with there supersize kit so I had to order a line from the stealer. If I were to do it over I would just get the bars from Yaffee and get my own lines etc... That being said I would not trade my monkey bars for anything! I get lots of compliments and love the ride!!!! Good Luck!   :bananarock:

Mine are 14" Monkey bars. When I sit on the bike my arms are straight out level with my shoulders. Perfect IMO.  :2vrolijk_21:

They are fine with the 12.5", had I done the 10" I don't think I could've used them?

Rerouted the stock cables and they are fine also all the wiring was long enough with the exception of one 2 wire connector. It actually wasn't used but I extended it anyway in case I need it at some point.

I did get impatient and didn't wait until my heat demons came. Now they're here and I don't think I'll use them as pulling the wires was a major pain I don't wish to repeat.

You were able to use the Stock Cables and Wires with the 12.5" bars??

I just picked up a set of 10" today from Yaffe's shop here in Phoenix.  Trying to determine if I need to invest (additional $370 for the kit) in the new cables, etc. or if I will be able to use the stock cables and wires.

DO NOT BUY THE CABLE KIT.   I purchased the cable kit for ???  ~350 bucks,  and ended up only using the throttle cable for my install,  and it was really too long.  other issues ...  you dont need what he offers in cable kits ...  Happy to share the part numbers for what i received ... cheaper if purchased seperatly anyway,  and as mentioned,  they did not fit my bike.  happy to sell my leftovers if anyone wants them.

I just installed the yaffe monkey 10inch bars on FLHTCSE 04.

just a few notes for anyone interested in doing the install.

1) bars did not fit right off,  I had to mill the risers down ~3/8 of an inch for the bars to fit the fairing. This added more space between the radio and riser cap too ...  good forprevention of  radio issues.
2) you dont need the color coded wire extentions ( will sell mine if you think you do) its a no brainer to do it without them.
3) had a lot of trouble fishing the cotrol wires through the bars.  if you have issues,  i can share how i did mine. just ask.

4) i like the bars alot ...    happy to share pictures if anyone is interested, but there are already many on this post..

Dont buy them all the wiring is long enough especially for the 10" bars The Hydraulic lines too.

I did not have the problem with the risers on the 12.5's

Dont buy them all the wiring is long enough especially for the 10" bars The Hydraulic lines too.

I did not have the problem with the risers on the 12.5's

Wheels...you were able to use the stock clutch and brake lines with those bars????

Yes rerouted the Hydraulic lines and all the wires were long enough with the exception of a 2 wire connector that comes out of the electronic throttle. It was unused and had a dummy plug. I extended it by 6" soldered and covered in heat shrink.

If anyone needs pics on the re-route of the lines I can post some

Are you putting a new fender in the front with a 21" wheel?

No using the stock fender but I did get fender spacers in case the old trick of drilling out the rear hole isnt enough  :nixweiss:

I would really like to see the re-route of the hydraulic lines....I am putting on WO 575's over the winter--I am sure the wires will be long enough, just not sure about where to route the clutch and brake lines.

Ok, day started out great for the new 10" Monkey Bar install.  Outer fairing off, Radio out, inner fairing off, controls off old bars, wires out of plugs - down to pin connectors and old bars off all in hour and a half.

Then the nightmare began.  Three and a half hours later and broken pin connector I finally had the throttle side wires pulled thru the new bars.  Clutch side went thru easy.  Finally got new bars on and controls back on - took quite a bit of wigglin and holdin my tongue just the right way while I pushed and pulled to get them lined up properly.

Then the process of fixing the broken pin connector and getting the wiring all back into the plugs.  Got the radio back in - stripped one screw puttin it in!  Lower fairing and ignition back in, hooked it all up and tried the controls to see if it all worked ---

Everything is backwards!  Left turn signal initiates right,  Right initiates left.  Horn is the start button, high beam activates fuel pump, start button is horn and fuel pump (on/off) is high beam.  I also have NO Brake Lights.

Good part is that I DID NOT NEED the install kit from Yaffe,  used all stock cables and wires and they work fine for length without any re-routing.

And the bars LOOK GREAT on the bike.

Can't wait to get this all fixed and ride.

Finally got it figured out  ;D

I SWORE I kept the right side plug with the right side controls and bolts when I took them apart and the left with the left so that is the way I wired it back up when put it together.  Sat and looked at it for a while this morning with a fresh head and good ole cup of joe in hand.  Realized I wired the left side wires into the right side plug and vice versa.  About twenty minutes later and she is good as gold.  All back together - looks great  :carrot: :jalapeno: :cucumber: :pepper: :pineapple: :orange: :mango: :bananarock:

Goin for a scoot to test em out in a few.  Thanks for all the help with the wiring pics, didn't need them after all.
