Slung a wheel weight and dented rear fender:(
« on: September 09, 2012, 11:07:12 PM »

Made a 540 mile trip last Saturday from Georgia to Alabama to Mississippi on up the Natchez Trace Parkway to Nashville and back to Georgia in one day.  Just now had a chance to get her out for a good detailing only to find that I have an outward dent in the rear fender and the paint has cracked away.  I just had a new rear tire put on two weeks ago and noticed when detailing her before our trip that I had to clean the sticky residue off where my wheel weights were before the newtire.  They had placed them (or new ones???) on the other side of the rim.  I put her on the lift and looked for the weights. NONE, they were both gone!!  Made a call to the service as I was just sick.  He said they would order me a new fender.  It just made me sick looking at it  :'(  Hubby suggested putting back on my 2 up seat to cover it...Out of sight, out of mind....for the moment.
Anyone else have this happen????

I spose you could consider yourself lucky,,, that the weights didn't hit anything a little more delicate,,,, as in one self.

I don't have that possibility,,,,one of the reasons I chose to use balance beads a long time ago, I reckon they're a good thing.

You have to be very careful with the cleaner you use on you wheels with stick-on weights.  I have noticed that harsh/strong cleaners will attack the glue and and make the stick-on weights very loose.  Luckily I found this on my bike BEFORE the weights came off.
I solved the problem by marking the wheel with a marker, removed the weight, cleaned the rim and weight then used a strong double sided tape to reapply the weight.  I no longer spray cleaner directly on the wheels, takes longer to clean the wheels but it eliminates this issue.

Happened on my Springer, something ran up the rear fender and acted like a pinball, cracked the paint in three places.

I am very careful when I wash the bike and only use the Glare products.  The original weights lasted 20,000 miles....makes me nervous of them going back on.  I'll have a little better idea of what is going on when the Service Manager returns from being out with the flu. Might have to look at going with the beads.  (At least while I have the solo seat off, I'm going to send it off to have some custom work done to it.)

This is a very common problem.  I have never used a harsh cleaner on my rims.  At ~5k miles, I walked into my garage one morning to ride to work, one of my front wheel weights was lying on the garage floor next to the front tire.  It fell off in the night!  I stuck it in my pocket and went by a local dealer after work.  They cleaned the rim with aerosol brake cleaner, put new tape on the weight and stuck it back on.  It lasted less than a week; gone, but no dents.  I'm riding w/o one weight because dealer is out of them.  Two days later, a second weight was gone.  I wiggled the third/final one, it was floppy, so I pulled it off.  Dealer finally got some weights in, so I bought 4, only needed 3.  I got home, the instructions actually say to put a couple of drops of super glue on the double sided tape before applying to rim.  I put three weights on, with super glue on the double sided tape, and they are still there 4k miles later.  Why didn't the dealer use super glue on the double sided tape when he put mine back on?  They've probably never read the instructions, my opinion.

Hi. How do these balance beads work please? Are the beads put into the tyre before fitting tyre to wheel?
