Title: 2018 FLHTKSE steering neck question
Post by: VRODDAVE on April 25, 2020, 02:20:02 PM
I recently bought a 2018 FLHTKSE.  ~5k miles.  While tinkering on the bike  I have noticed that it is nearly impossible to keep the Front wheel straight while on the jiffy stand.   Front wheel just seems to fall to the left all of the way all by itself.    I have never noticed anything like this on my previous bikes.

The reason this concerns me is because as the front tire falls all the way to the left it has a tendency to pull the bike forward which leaves the jiffy stand slightly pointing to the rear.

So, the question is is this normal? Or do you think the head bearings need to be adjusted with more tension.    I would not be looking forward to making that adjustment unnecessarily lots of work I think,  and I’ve heard that doesn’t need to be done until 25,000 miles. Please correct me if I’m wrong

Thanks in advance to any of you experts willing to give advice

Dave

Hey Dave......I don't recall that you wrecked the SEEG.  I hope you weren't injured to badly.

Yes, if the bike is fully suspended the front end should fall away to which ever side the weight is slightly tipped to.  When the dealership does the fall away test, they do it to both sides (once the bike is centered and balanced) to ensure that it's reacting correctly.  But as I recall, it's supposed to fall all the way to the stop and bounce back a bit.  Maybe Jim or somebody else in the know will be along here to give the specifics on the fall away.

Hey JCZ,   Yeah, crash that bike about four , maybe even five years ago. Lost track of time.  Seems like yesterday.   we talked back then I told you I didn’t think I could ever ride again and you assured me that I would. Ha ha ha as .    you got the windshield pouches off of my SEEG for your new bike as I recollect

So, I don’t have any way to elevate the bike from the ground anymore as my motorcycle Jack got stored far away in my dads shop .

But the steering falls all the way to the left while on the kickstand even if I straighten it up it will fall right back.  Just seems weird to me ha!

The 2014 and up steering head bearing preload check is totally different from the old method, and it does take more work.  It's actually similar to the methods used on the non-touring models going back a long time.

Check the attachment for the new method.

This attachment is the actual specifications, updated in 2015 to correct a boo-boo Harley had in the original.

Dave......gettin old ain't for sissies!  LOL  I vaguely remember buying the windshield pouch from you.   I still have it on my bike and it's got 62k miles on it now.

I didn't realize that you were talking about when it's on it's on the kickstand.  I'm not sure, with the newer models, as Jerry mentions, if they all do that or not.  My 2013 does not do that but I know they changed the frame design a bit.....I believe in 2014.   :nixweiss:

Not quite sure it’s “ normal” As my 2019 limited does the same thing. I’ve checked the bolt that holds the tab and all is tight.
I don’t remember my other bikes doing this, and it IS a bit unnerving when you park the bike and it rolls forward a bit and the stand is pointing back. I’m very cautious when parking now.
I think I’ll compare tabs with my other bikes, I think they are all the same back to 04?
I wonder what the dealer would  say :drink:

Mike, if I read your post correctly your 19 does the same thing. And I’m with you it is  unnerving watching that Jiffy stand lean backwards.  I have looked pretty carefully at the jiffy stand lock tab and it doesn’t seem as though there is anything wrong.  I’m pretty sure that floppier of the steering all the way left is what is causing my issue. Perhaps putting down the Jiffy stand and letting the tire swing first before dismount would make things better

And I think there’s no question what Harley would say, “they all do that“ Ha ha ha

I’ve gotten into the habit of leaving the bike in first gear, hit the kill switch, let the bike move forward or back And turn the wheel either full left or right depending on the slope BEFORE putting the stand down.

My 19 CVO road glide the front wheel stays straight when I park it on side stand, same with my wife's 19 RGS.

I would think they all should stay straight when parked on side stand, every Harley have have owned does.

I am with you Dave......  I think my front end should stay straight or wherever direction I put it. I did not want to get that Deep into moving the entire fairing forward to adjust but it looks like I might have to if for no other reason than piece of mind.      I guess if I’m going to go in that deep, it might be the right time to install some mini apes.    The handlebars on this 2018 just seeing a little week as well. I had the Paul Yaffe 10 inch bars on my last bike and really liked them.  Next I’ll be starting a new thread on installing those Ha Ha ;D.  I’ve never had a flyby wire bike before so I don’t know the complications  installing bars.   I promised the wife I was just going to ride this bike, not work on it all the time like the last one.   ;D    Thanks again for all the feedback guys I really appreciate it

Dave you're not far from Folsom HD......you might swing by and take a look at the bikes on the floor and see if they stay straight forward or to the right when pointed that way.  That might give you a starting point of reference.

I just wanted to post a follow up on this issue. I took JCZ advice and looked at new bikes at the local dealer. They did not have the issue. So I took a step back and decided to service the jiffy stand and the first thing I found was the bolt that holds the lock tab was loose. This allowed an extra 1 or 2 degrees of unwanted movement.   As the steering would fall to the left it would pull the bike forward against the slack at the locking tab and steering would fall all the way left.      When I tightened the locking tab it could no longer pull forward and steering remained in whatever position I wanted it.

I also ordered and installed the 10° locking tab found on eBay and now the Jiffy stand locks in a slightly forward position.     I am happy all the way around with the fix.

Thanks for all the feedback
