Suspension upgrade
« on: July 06, 2020, 12:43:27 PM »

So after riding around on my new 2020 RG Limited I have noticed how much better the suspension is compared to my 15 CVO Street Glide. Is it the street glide to road glide comparison or is it that the Street Glide is almost 6 years old and things get weak? I am thinking it's time to upgrade the front and rear suspension on the 15.  I don't need the best of the best....but what am I using--Ohlins front and rear, Legends, etc? Front and rear should match--no?

Legends! Lifetime warranty, great shocks. Never had a complaint from the hundreds that we have sold and installed!

I used the FKC102 cartridges on the front and the HD772 Blackline shocks in the rear on my 2016 CVO Street Glide, it road like a different bike afterwords.

For the rear on my 2020 CVO Street Glide I used the Russ Wernimont Designs shocks and I cannot believe how good these shocks are. I have used the top of the line Ohlins on my previous CVO, these simply blow away any other shocks I have used. It felt as if I changed my seat as well. Matt Laidlaw has a video on them:

No problem with the remote resivore interfering with the plugs that go in the rear of each bag?

None whatsoever. It also has a arm that rotates the reservoir away from the bags. You have to order the correct set. They are the best shocks I have ever used. Bar none

I had RevoA H-D Version shocks and now have the Fox IFP-R shocks H-D Version and I prefer the Fox IFP-R by a lot. They are much smoother on small stuff and still resist bottoming very well on large hits. However I’m not sure about the Fox front cart rides in H-D yet. They seem really good 2 up but too stiff 1 up. I’m giving them a few thousand miles to settle in before I make a real decision on them.

Curious as what makes them so much better than all the others?  I currently run Ohlin on one bike, 134 inch and really like them a lot.  I have legends in the front of that bike.  Was looking and legends all around for this bike.

I watched the video, I like the idea of smooth.  However I am more of the guy that runs the corners or canyons as he says, so my Öhlins are set a bit firm.

What ever I do they will be 13 inch shocks, extra travel helps.

I also got the 13" shocks. I ride the same as you. These shocks are almost magic. On the street with rough roads they are luxurious ride, in the twistys they are keep the rear planted, and I have never bottomed out even once. I called and talked to them before I bought and their description sounded too good to be true. I was impressed. My Ohlins HD 357 I thought was wonderful but frankly this is way beyond. You can set the shocks for whatever type of ride you want, but from the factory it was awesome and I did nothing but set the sag.

Bought an 18 DVO RG a year ago, and found the stock shocks to be extremely rough.  Based upon all of the good reports on the Legends, I went with the REVOs front and back.  While definitely an improvement over stock, I find them to still be very hard going over rough roads.  I traded a number of emails with Legend, trying to get them tuned in, but still find them very harsh on rough roads.  Disappointing for me.

Tempted. The stock shocks on my cvo are pretty darn good though,  can push the bike hard enough through the twisties to scrape the floorboards riding 2 up. Today, I took the bike on some rough and tumble sections of I-81 under construction and the bike felt planted at high speeds.

Well shucks, doesn’t seem to be a clear winner here.  I’m looking to upgrade my stock 2018 CVO RG suspension all around and it looks like there’s been some good experiences all around.

Although any shock asborber is a wear item. I had heard so I asked the Ohlins sales guy at Daytona a couple years ago and Ohlin does recommend a rebuild around 20k. I can't remember the cost but it was several hundred dollars and of course you had to ship them back for this procedure. Being rebuildable is great, at 20k seems not so great to me.

I had about 36K on my Ohlins, they felt like there was no damping, so I shipped them off to Ohlins and almost $400.00 latter I had a new set again (that price included shipping to and back to me) I think next time I may look into another brand.

I have had mine rebuilt twice.  I believe right a 250 each time.  They had just over 30K miles on them each time.  Ohlin has a booth at dayton bike week and they rebuild then there.  Ride in, the remove your shocks, install loaners.  They call when done and you come back and they install your shocks again.

Much difference in ride / handling between Ohlins and Legends?

Anyone experience both?

My wife will be having a back surgery in a couple weeks.
And wanting to change the rear shocks to absorb those harsh jolts.
Will the Legends do what I want to accomplish?

My wife will be having a back surgery in a couple weeks.
And wanting to change the rear shocks to absorb those harsh jolts.
Will the Legends do what I want to accomplish?

I see it's been about a month since your post, hopefully her surgery was a success. Yes Joel, Legends will make you both very happy but make sure you get the 13" Revo A's and set the sag properly and start out at 3 for rebound. It was a night and day difference for me, and my BSR actually enjoys the ride now. Checking the sag from time to time will keep your ride and handling top notch as well.

The wife's surgery was October 26th,  and it's been a tough few weeks. But also better each day.
Doctor said that it went very well and post op x-rays look exactly how he wanted.
Along with stating up to 18 months for a full recovery gives me plenty of time to sit on the fence and decide what brand of shocks to get.
The OE air shocks are ok for me as a solo rider, but I believe that an upgrade is needed.
I will see if the Indy that I know more on a business relationship than a service location will let me cruise on his ride for a comparison,  he sells Legend and installs many sets each season.

I have heard good things about Super Shox also. For me, I'm gonna have to wait until the border is open for travel as I want to buy and get them (no decision on brand made yet) installed in the US for substantial savings!

Just put them on my 2016 cvo sg, huge ride improvement!

I have these shocks in the 13” non-heavy duty version. These are really soft shocks!! I’m 205 and my wife is 125. It’s my opinion that in two up configuration like us, that the HD shocks should have been purchased because we’ve bottomed out before quite a few times. Ok so you say adjust your springs. I have exposed about 1.5” of shock screwing the spring rate up so that it rides well. This again is without having the tourpac on nor loaded. When the wife and I did a trip last year we had the tourpac loaded and bags and we bottomed out too many times to count and I was pissed. The springs are just too soft.

Now, the ride these give going over moderate bumps is incredibly nice like a Caddy. But if you hit that one section in the road where they put too much blacktop and bam your going to bottom out. I’m going to call the company and see if I can upgrade to the heavy duty springs.

No problem with the remote resivore interfering with the plugs that go in the rear of each bag?
None at all I have these and installed them myself. The belly of the bike just needs to be supported and it’s easy

Tempted. The stock shocks on my cvo are pretty darn good though,  can push the bike hard enough through the twisties to scrape the floorboards riding 2 up. Today, I took the bike on some rough and tumble sections of I-81 under construction and the bike felt planted at high speeds.
Hey Kojac, run up 88 a bit from Bainbridge. I said I’d never travel that Fking road again. There are heaves in that highway that completely bottomed my bike out all the way up until i got on 787N. I came over 206 from Ithaca. I’ll do 20 into Duanesburg from now on until they rebuild that road. Holy CRAP!
