I've got my boardtrack racer bike build completed now and would like to cut down just a bit of the loud cracking in the exhaust. I have dual reverse cone mufflers with removable baffles.
I could use fiberglass insulation, but I'm guessing that would burn out quite quickly.
Ant thoughts or suggestions?

I used ceramic cloth for mine. That stuff holds up to heat!

A friend of mine uses steel wool. Not sure how he got it but he has a gigantic roll of it, almost seems industrial size to me.

Not sure how well steel wool works. I know it makes a good fire starter. I once was polishing my chrome regulator cover on my Panhead and it caught on fire. I think the Boy Scouts use steel wool and a 9 volt battery to start fires.

It’s been in the mufflers on Kathy’s bike for 30,000 miles and they where on my old bike for 10,000 miles before that. :nixweiss:

My ceramic 1/2" thick insulation is not here yet, tomorrow I believe.
The exhaust wrap is literally like a loose woven seat belt material made from fiberglass, at least that's what I've used. It would be way to restrictive in my opinion.
When I pulled out my baffles yesterday, the fiberglass packing that was originally in the mufflers, before and after Jet Hot ceramic coating, had blown down the exit end of the reverse cone in the mufflers and was doing nothing at all. When I repack the baffles I will use the same stainless thin gauge wire they used and make sure that the start of the baffle packing is sewn into the perforation of the baffle to keep it in place. I'm sure that even with the ceramic insulation it will gradually get louder as time goes on, but for now, they are almost like un-baffled drag pipes in loudness. Not my cup of tea personally.

I got my 1/2" ceramic insulation the other day and wrapped both baffles. One wrap of 1/2" is all my cans could hold. I used exhaust wrap stainless cable ties and some stainless thin wire to retain the insulation snug around the baffles.
Not a not of difference in loudness though. I think if I were to cap off the center pass-through perforation disc that would force the exhaust to go out and then come back in again into the center chamber. Probably won't do that though, just get it ready to sell and move on.
One thing I did notice though after firing it up, I was spitting fiber out the exhaust for quite some time... :)

I have used steel wool. There is heat resistant "racing" Muffler packing is readily available from dirt motocross bike after parts suppliers.
