I would be suffering from butt-hole pucker leading up to and through every good bump.  That's a fair bit of mass raising up even ever so slightly and then coming back down on the bed straps and their pin mounts with each of those bumps.  Even if the bike is strapped down well the weight transfer up and down is still putting energy against it.

Probably fine?  Sure....  HPS (heavy pucker syndrome)?  Absolutely.  Motorcycles like long bed trucks.

Could you find or fab or long piece of C-channel that the front and rear wheel could rest in?  That way all the weight transfer wouldn't be happening against the tailgate.

As Don said it would pucker me up too. But if you would block under the frame at the back of the truck you could move most of the weight from the tailgate to the bed of the truck

Go to a recycling shop and get a 8 inch I beam 8 ft long and place the bike on it.
When you're done sell it back to the recycling company.

Depending on road conditions and type you could return with your tailgate looking like it was sandblasted. When I was in B/S I fixed a couple where tailgate was left down on long trips. Stone chips killed them.

That's what I have done in the past. I also do that when I trailer as to not compress the suspension much.

No way, I would borrow or rent a trailer. Maybe even wait for the weather to clear and ride the 1000 miles.

Same here. Allows me to suck the bike down solid without loading suspension

That is a definite do not do. The tailgate hardware is not meant to hold that load. You would need to get a tailgate support for your truck similar to this one:

Uhaul has a couple of motorcycle specific trailers.  I’ve used the larger one to haul an Electra Glide.

be careful with the tailgate down & trailer hitched. jackstand handles get in the way & tight turn situations can put gate into the trailer. fwiw.

Get yourself a sheet of 3/4 plywood to extend to the end of the tailgate. Works great.
