128 upgrade 2020 CVO Street Glide
« on: May 13, 2020, 10:59:48 PM »

I Just picked up a 2020 CVO Street Glide in Sand dune. I’m loving the smoother idle, mechanical quietness and Smooth power delivery but missing my 117 twin cams 125 HP and TQ so I opted to upgrade to a Fuel Moto 128 big bore kit. We are looking at the 10.75 to 1 compression kit With stock heads and throttle body adding a Fuel Moto Jackpot head pipe, Fullsac 2.25 baffles, Dyno Jet Power Commander with a Fuel Moto map and auto tune and a new cam developed by Woods and Fuel Moto. The cam is either a 22E or 22XE that is brand new and just being released from testing. According to fuel Moto it makes better TQ then the 22X and gives a very smooth power delivery. My goal is strong roll on power and effortless acceleration while still pulling from way down low and smoothly. Any thoughts on this set up? I love my 117’s top end pull but it is not as smooth or happy under 2750 To 3000 RPM as I want for relaxed riding. it’s also very sensitive to throttle inputs and is very jerky when making small throttle movements.

Sounds like a decent build... Keep us updated... Did you even consider the H-D 131 kit??

Yes I did, but I wanted more sound and $$ for $$ way more options after market. 3 cubic inches is minimal. I want the higher low end TQ and sound of non catted header.

I do not know anything about Fuel Moto's / Woods new cams.  I do know lots of people are happy with Fuel Moto kits and results.  You should be able to see in the 130's for torque with stock heads and throttle body.  Compression has a lot of effect on the Torque, is that his low compression Kit?  The M8 will easily handle more compression than that.

To me the shape of the torque curve, where it start and how big the area under it is more important than peak numbers.  Does Fuel Moto have any dyno runs with these new cams?  I like torque to come on strong by 2300 rpm or so and hold good and flat until at least 4000 rpm or more.  I prefer peak torque around 3500 rpm.

I understand not doing the 131 kit, there are pros and cons to both ways.  I did a 130 on my CVO RG, not a kit.

They show a peak of 142 TQ with the 22X cam in this configuration and the XE is suppose to be stronger. It’s making 125 ish TQ at 2000 rpm quickly climbing to over 140 by 3000 RPM and pulls HP up to about 5000 RPM then levels off.  My current twin cam 117 comes on later and pulls more HP but I think I’m going to like the roll on power of this set up more.

I was just asking about the H-D 131 kit.. I went aftermarket 128 with headwork and I’m very happy with my setup...Lots of great choices for the M8 platform...

Just looked art 3 different builds using the 22x and stock heads and TB with 10.75 compression.  Nice torque curve, comes on early and long and flat.

Yes it does. I called Fuel Moto and got info on the 22X-E and it’s suppose to be very similar down low but pull HP to 5500 RPM! Sounds like a winner for sure.

I have a 2019 CVO Street Glide that I put the Stage III with SE498 Cam, K&N A/C, 4.5" Street Cannon's, Fuelmoto (Jackpot) 2/1/2 headers w/baffle in, Thundermax tuner. This cam pulls really well and runs through town very easy. I would recommend this build without hesitation. I did speak to Fuelmoto for recommendations on a cam and they suggested the 222. If someone can show me a graph that shows a similar rate of pull but more obviously, I'd get that cam but right now I don't dare to touch it.

The dyno results are after a SEPST w/autotune (wide-band) as the first and low pull with the speed limiter still enabled so couldn't get a full pull. The rest are after changing this to the Thundermax. The tune isn't very steady but I think now after I have 1100 miles on it, that graph will be pretty good. If you ping me I'll repost the new one but I have to get time with the tuner and that's hard right now.

Dyno results are as you all know speculative and I think this feels like more than what is listed.

That is one seriously odd looking dyno sheet. Not the numbers but the configuration. Is this a 128 build or a 117 with a cam? My goal is high low end TQ that ramps up slow and carries HP to 5500ish rpm.

This is a 117ci Stage 3 with the first pull being with a Screaming Eagle  Pro Street Tuner and Autotune.  The rest were after the same build, just replaced the SE PST with a Thundermax. Please give me some more feedback as to what your speaking to as I'm interested to hear.

Thanks

The dyno sheet reads different numbers for the TQ and HP when you follow the line across. Left side is 120 right side is 125 on the same line for example. As far as the actual numbers go you have a very big TQ dip in the cruising range just over 2000 RPM and very low low end TQ numbers for a 117. My guess is your exhaust is hurting you and or the cam. Take a look at The dyno sheets on Fuel motto’s website. I’m looking more for the smooth Flat line TQ That pulls everywhere. Your build is more off a high end HP build.

Yea I did see that drop and to be honest, the shaky line concerned me more than the dip but I did see that as well. The Cam in here is HD Torque cam 498 and agree that down under 2500 it loses but when I need to do something I always downshift anyway but I am looking for another cam. I was thinking maybe the S&S 475 or Red Shift 468. Maybe this new Woods 22x-e cam.

My bike regardless of the sheet pulls right to redline. It's waiting to have the Autotune pushed to the base map and a dyno run completed. I'll know more then and I'll post. I haven't seen any Stage 3 builds on FuelMoto site to compare what I have too though.

The SS 475 cam can be tricky to tune, but runs great if you can... The RS 468 is the way I would go with your above build... Just an awesome all around cam...

Any thoughts on the 22XE cam from Woods that Fuelmoto has in comparison to the RS 468? I'd like to eliminate that immediate dip in torque and have a higher overall torque gain. Not sure if I can get another 5 HP out of this or not, but I see 114ci bikes without the Stage 3 getting my results.

Does anyone really know other than compression, what the differences are with the stock 117 cyl and the stage 3 cylinders? Like if I got some 11.1 pistons, and have the same cam etc. what's the diff? Why did I have to spend $3k?

I’m thinking the 22 XE and the RS468 are very similar. I really like the look of the dyno sheets with the 22XE. Killer bottom end but pulls out to the right better then the 22X. What size are your baffles? What is the compression ratio on your current build? At the end of the day,  Sheets are sheets, all that matters is the smile on your face when you rip it:)

I looked at that 22 XE as well and it's on Woods site now. Although their site is so old it makes my Grandmother look young! They have pic from 2013 Torque Battles as the most current!

Anyway, The baffles are stock (non-removable) 4.5" Street Cannon slip-ons. When I went to my buddies house for Memorial day, I swapped my slip-ons for his older (2017) Street Cannons or whatever the Screaming Eagle ones were then because with the Fuel Moto header, really makes the "Glasspack" rapping sound when you have a load on it and a big rap when your on it hard. I hatted it so much I was going to get a pair of Khrome Werks pipes and he said here just put these on so I did. Much better and it actually had better pull with the quieter pipes on.

Very True, yet most choose the mufflers with the 2.5" or bigger baffles that hurt low end torque for the sake of the sound they want.

Your headpipe is fine. My go to mufflers are Cobra 909 or Fullsack and recore the stock mufflers, then you get a choice of baffles. The torque variety are 1.75 and 2" which a mild cam M8 will like.

The SE-498 cam is just not one that is going to lend itself to bottom end torque...as mentioned before, your graph is off a bit from right side to left, as the numbers on the scaling are off. It also shows "UNCORRECTED" not an SAE run so you results are showing a bit higher than others you are trying to compare to.

I had not noticed this "Uncorrected" statement. I wonder if he has the ability to do that? It's a self-made dyno with old software.

Anyway update..

So after I made it home from the Memorial Weekend and riding hard with my buddy. It was making a pretty good valve train noise like a leaked down lifter(s) in a car. I had rode it the day before without noticing it but the morning I had to leave to travel back 400 miles, I started the bike and I could hear it but with the bike cold, oil thick it was much quieter so I thought it was ok.. I get about 15 miles away and stop for gas and there is the vlave train noise. I checked the oil again, perfect, and rode it home. I called my new build connection and told him I'd like him to hear my bike. He listened to it and said, "You better not think about riding that". SO I left it there.

I went to see him after it was apart and the cam lobes were worn down (5k mile on the bike) and the cam bolt broke with indications it was hitting the cam chest cover. No other indications of any damage yet. He's going to scope the cylinders to see if there has been any damage there. No indications of metal in the oil except for small finings on the plug which I assume was from the cam but no chunks of damage. He doens't think anything is wrong up top but he's going to take this apart as well to make sure it's all ok up there.

Unknown what the issues were but in my opinion, the lifters gave up. Any thoughts? I don't have a pic of the cam but if you can imaging the round shaft being smooth and the start of and round the center tip back down to the shaft, looks like a piece of 400 grit sandpaper with a little sharp edge on the cam edges.

That metal travels. A full teardown is now needed to fix it right. What happened is not all that relevant but the method to get it fixed and what parts are inspected and replaced is as well. Plus a full flush of all the oiling system is imperative. That metal gets into the rods as well.

Hi I saw your response but wasn't able to respond at that time.

How should this oil flush happen? Just change the oil filter a few times or oil and filter? Seems the filter and the magnet would pick anything up in 500 miles?

So I had this kit installed (Fuel Moto 128 10.75 to 1 compression with Jackpot header, Wood’s 22XE cam, stock throttle body and heads and fullsac 2.25 baffles , we loaded the base map from Fuel Moto And ran 3 auto tune sessions On the Power Vision, the AFR was only off by 1.5%, so the map was on the money! This is the nicest running smoothest bike I have ever owned. The power is Effort less and everywhere, it runs smoother then stock. I was going to have it dyno tuned but it runs so well I’m afraid to mess with it LOL. I like the sound of the Fullsac 2.25 baffles way more then I thought I would. Sound clips do them 0 justice. This set up is perfect for a bagger, super strong low end but carries way out. It almost feels like a VVT set up:)

1RoadKing,

That's great news. Glad to see everything is working as you "Didn't expect" and are extremely happy.

So update on mine. My bike wasn't done last Friday as I had hoped. He is still waiting on the economy to get back to normal so when someone orders parts, the manufacture has them and they can be delivered.. So I also spoke to two big Internet builders that we all watch their videos from. They both said it's unclear what may have been done to any Babbit(?) bearings on the crank. My original issue when this first started was my Stage 3 installed from the dealer with 6 miles on the bike failed because they never put a tune on the bike. This caused the bike to run extremely hot (like hot as Hell) and it scored the cylinders badly. HD replaced the CYlinders, pistons, and rings and called it a day. Well as it turns out, this may have caused issues that would occur down the road which is now! My cam (SE498) lost it's temper and disintegrated. From speaking to these builders, they said there is an issue with HD Lifter Bore size where they have an accepted tolerance of 1.5 thow - 3.5 thow and when you get over 2.5, the lifter is unable to get proper oiling into it because of the nature of how this oil is injected into the lifter. If there is too great of clearance between the lifter and the bore, there is no way for the oil to get into the lifter because the bore is too far away from the lifter to force the oil into it. Thus the lifter while it's traveling up and down leaks down with not enough oil, and causes the pushrods to be loose and cause valve train issues.

I think here is where my bike is. The guy working on it is checking the bores of the lifters, checking the cylinders to see if they are OK. So we'll see if they pushrods come in and my bike is done by Friday..

Lifter bores? Well there are far bigger problems than that which should be focused on. If not this motor will never be right by performing partial repairs.
A flush means while the engine is out the oil cooler is flushed with clean fluid such as kerosene, all passages that lead to the pan flushed, the pan removed and replaced. After a failure like you described a new long block or a full tear down and most of the major components should be inspected and/or replaced.

Do you have any Dyno sheet from the build? I'd like to see what that cam did with the 128.

Unfortunately, no. I have not had it on a Dino yet.  My guess is 125 to 130 HP and 145 TQ. It pulls so hard from 2000 up its intoxicating lol. The base tune is so good from Fuel Moto that I’m in no rush to have it tuned.

After running this set up all summer I’m tickled pink:) the power, sound and refinement are top notch. I would not hesitate doing this exact same build again. I’m going to have it tuned I. The spring just to make sure it’s the best it can be, but the canned map runs better then any bike I’ve ridden. I’m also interested to see my numbers. The bike also runs very cool.

Update, added a SE64 MM throttle body with Ward intake and had the bike Dino’s and the numbers are awesome. It was in STD but a 5th gear pull so should be in line with Fuel Moto’s 6th gear pulls in SAE.

Really nice! I know this is a month old but I had been following your progress and I like what I see. I'm planning a similar build with the same 128 kit that you used from Fuel Moto. I have already done the cam chest upgrade to all S&S plus the RS468 cam. I purchased a slightly used Stage IV kit from one of the members here and I'm going to re-use the CNC heads and 64mm throttle body and intake from the kit. I already have the complete Fulsac setup including 2" baffles and TTS and throwing a new set of Fueling lifters in for good measure since I have well over 20k on the S&S's.

I hope that I'm as happy with mine as you are with yours!!

Got her back yesterday and did a short heat sync run and all seems good. Dyno tune is set for this coming Thursday so not much riding until then with this "get me by" tune.
