External Breather Install
« on: January 04, 2021, 06:36:43 PM »

I had a rare day off today and since it's not exactly riding weather here in Washington I decided to tackle what appeared to be a fairly nominal task. After seeing several suggestions on this site and researching on the internet and U toob It was time to take my Ventilator A/C off again and do what I hope is another upgrade.

I started by removing the little breather hoses that route that nasty hot oil vapor from the breather bolts in the  heads back into the throttle body, then marked and removed the backing plate so that I could drill a couple of 1/2" holes in it for re-routing to the out side of the A/C.

After drilling and cleaning up the holes I put a couple of rubber grommets in them for a clean and tight fit.

Then ran some 1/4" vacuum line through to a T on the backside.

Then I ran a piece of 3/8" out and down under the bike. I chose not to use a filter or catch can at least for now, so we'll see if that changes after a few rides. The cost of this upgrade was under $10.

Also the video that I got most of my info from was this one;

I really wasn't crazy about having a tube running down the side of my motor but until I come up with a more discrete
or cleaner way to route my line, this'll have to do.

I agree don't like the look of a rubber hose running down the side of the engine but I also would think you'd need a catch can somewhere to keep oily residue from blowing back onto the bottom of the bike. I definitely don't want residue all over the bike underside & dripping on the garage floor like in the '70's.

I ran two short lengths of plastic hose behind the backing plate into a T then forward and down under the engine.
See if it’s noticeable with a similar picture.
It’s been on for about 1000 miles no drips from the filter on the end.......yet.

Started out for a test ride after work today since the weather was cooperating and while waiting for a traffic light about a half mile from home some dumb b***h in a beater ran in to me from behind. !@#$%&

No major damage, rear fender and some other items will need to be replaced and I didn't go down but it sure ruined my week. So I didn't get the opportunity to check out the breather system. Guess that's the least of my worries at the moment.

Glad you didn't go down and are not hurt.   That really sucks, let me guess beater had no insurance.

I know when I got hit, the itch did not have insurance.

Anyone using one of the kits that route the fittings and hoses upwards toward the tank so theoretically the oil solids will run back into the heads?

I would be very interested in this information if you would be so kind as to pass it on to me. Getting it out of my Ventilator as I did was the big thing but now that I have everything bypassed, what I do with it, is the million dollar question.

Yeah Dave thanks for your kind words. I just got off the phone with her insurance co. (Travelers) and she apparently has coverage. Next is to go and get an estimate at my local dealer and get the ball rolling. Harley painted parts.....oh boy, hurry up and wait, but you know all about this, huh Dave?!
