After leaving the COG Railway, it was time to circle around the mountain to the Mt. Washington Auto Road.  Ride up or take a bus?

The Mount Washington Auto Road is a 7.6 mi toll road in southern Coos County, New Hampshire that extends from New Hampshire Route 16 in Green's Grant.

The road climbs 4,618 ft from an altitude of 1,527 ft at the bottom to 6,145 ft at the top, an average gradient of 11.6%.

The Appalachian Trail crosses this area too.

I had a customer who sold his business and walked the entire trail starting from Georgia.  What makes this unique is, he never hiked before and his age at the time of the journey.  RESPECT!

For the weak hearted, beware there are parts of the road that are unpaved and fairly packed gravel.  ~ 1.2 miles

The fact that there is a sign suggests that there has been this behavior in the past…My guess, hikers attempting to get back to the bottom?
