110 rings
« on: October 04, 2021, 01:35:59 PM »

I have a set of 110 cylinders and pistons from a '12 cvo and was checking the ring end gap. .017" top ring and .028" second ring.  I was looking in my '07 service manual and Harley calls for .016" min on top ring and .014" min on second ring.  Was there a change in specs over the years??  What would you folks suggest for end gaps?    I intend on doing a top end on my '07 Ultra.

Also, are the Hastings 2m5299 rings an acceptable replacement for the way over priced Mahle rings?

Thanks

The .017" and .028" were checked on a set of cylinders that had 4000 miles on them.

Problem is when you put the cylinders in plates and measure you will likely have bore distortion.  New rings does not fix that. Nor does ball honing. So a bore oversize is appropriate and you get everything properly fit. Otherwise just clean everything up and run it.

Just to be clear, the rings were the used ones out of those cylinders.  I was curious what the gap was and checked the used rings in the used bores. Top ring nice, second seems way off, but maybe specs changed since '07?

I assume you are using Total Seal gapless rings. Is that right?

When I did my 07 I was going to use Hastings rings  but went with Total seal. Also found that the 07 piston (at least in mine ) the ring width is 1.2 in the first and second Grove and 2.5 in the oil.

Gapless are optional with Total Seal and you can only use a gapless in the top only or second Groove only not both
