Front tire wear
« on: October 24, 2007, 06:53:27 PM »

Hello, I'm the newbie. First of all, thanks to whoever left a business card on my bike at biketoberfest, it was a card for this website (that i didn't realize existed). Anyhow, My 04 SE2 wore the front tire more on the right side than the left. Not really cupping just bald tread. Some people suggested brake caliper, but our bikes have dual brakes. I replaced tire at 8400mi (good mi?). Now it has about 1500mi on the new tire & i think its doing it again.  Any help or replies much apprec...

I'd be very curious to hear what people think regarding this.  My friend's 05 Roadglide w/spoke wheels did the same thing.  Right side of the tire was almost new, left side was gone.

It's most likely an alignment issue.  The wheel is running not straight to compensate for the rear tire out of alignment.  Have it checked at the dealer or indy shop.  You can actually do it yourself.  I believe its in the service manual.

Interesting. I just replaced mine at 5,000 at the beginning of the year, admittedly early, but I didn't notice anything regarding uneven wear. I'd also recommend getting it checked out. Something doesn't sound right.

Definitely sounds like an alignment issue...brake calipers would not cause something like this unless things were really out of wack, and you'd notice that in other ways.  Either the forks are not parallel...forks are not mounted in the triple tree correctly, etc.  One other possibility could be unequal amounts of fork oil in each side, causing one side to sag more when you are riding or loaded down.  If someone is riding behind you, this might be noticeable to them, your bike running down the road like a dog trots...

There is definitely an alignment problem.  Cupping is generally caused by out of balance, poor suspension, or under inflation, or a combo of the three.

Generally, at least on the touring models, we can go through two rear tires to one front, so getting 15-20K out of a front is not unusual.  I've got 5K on my Vrod, and the front is showing very little wear compared to the rear, as it should be.

Not hard to believe on a bike on which the front wheel has to be convinced to stay on the ground.....  :nixweiss:

thanks guys for the input. i'm gonna have it checked if the new one shows more of the same. i had the rear replaced recently, so maybe they aligned it correctly this time. since the new rear i rode to daytona 2 weeks ago from n.c. (1200 mi. round trip) and had no probs. i went many miles not even holding the bars, w/arms crossed. the guys behind me only mentioned that the bike must be perfectly balanced cause they thought i wuz asleep, lol.
