I've been through all that brain damage. I'm hoping by just doing the rebuild, i'll have $3,500-$4,500 in it. hopefully $3,500, but you know how that goes. I could buy a Jims at $6,800-$7,200 and tell HD to replace the 110. Then I'd have two engines, one HD 110, in the crate still, brand new. That means I'd have $3,400 in the new HD 110 engine. Even if you gave me $3,400 for the new 110, I'd rather have the 113 than the Jim's 120. Would you give me $3,400 for a brand new 110???

Plus, I've got a black v-rod I need to sell. Plus a 30' camper, and an ultralight aircraft. i'd rather have the $$.  ;D
So it's a garage sale/ Ribfest is it  ;)

Hard to tell from the pictures.  Wheel fairings too?  Man, that's not an ultralight.  That's just a weakly built semi-fixed-wing aircraft.

Dad was the flying nut. I flew for a year or so, on another one he had previously. Actually pretty boring to me.

Dad crashed these things time after time. Landed in corn fields many times. New wheels, axles, props, etc. If you think HD's are expensive.......

That's cool Ken, I had no idea you had that.  It's been years since I've flown a plane.

Bob, I'd make you a deal of the century on this one. A man with 9 bikes surely needs just one aircraft.

Get it Bob
Then Ilene can take flying lessons.
Then we can go to Europe.

I like it when a plan comes together!

Question about motor options.  The Jim's 120 is an early tc style motor isn't it with the old style oil pump and cam chain tensioner?  The 131 has all the new features I think.

Howie, what makes the rebuild a 113?   What cylinders & heads did you recommend Ken use?

Just trying to get my 'database' complete before I (hopefully never) have to make a similar decision.

Thanks,

Jerry

Ken, ultralights are supposed to crash.  At least it always seemed that way to me.  Back when they were at the height of their popularity they were also falling out of the sky all over the place.  Fortunately they rarely had too far to fall so, at least some of the time, the people pretending to control them didn't even actually die.

I actually broke one once.  For some stupid reason the local airport used to allow an unltralight operations area at one end of the field.  Was taking off in a 172 with wheel pants and felt this little thump as I was maybe 20 feet off the ground.  Circled around to let the tower eyeball for a possible bird strike or something and saw a bright lime green ultralight cratered in.  Jackass had taken off right underneath me and got a wing in my wheel.  Couldn't believe he was pissed at me.

Yup Don, that's the way I saw it. they were crashing right and left.

The last photo I sent was an old Quicksilver. It was fun to fly, it'd land 20-25 MPH. You just never made it very far away from home. It was a "true" ultralight. The last photo was a Rans with a Rotex engine. It is a lot better engine than the Quicksilver had. The Rans has a cruising speed of 75-90 MPH if I'm not mistaken. Technically it's an experimental plane, not an ultra-light.

I may not be able to sell it actually because of new laws. It's supposed to be FFA approved to sell now. I may have to part it out. hmmm. May be the best thing to do with this 110 engine.

Hey, Anyone want to buy a crank shaft out of a 110 engine? It's absolutely as good as brand new! No lie.

You ought to be able to charge extra for the special "concentric rotation method" that it offers.  Oops, never mind.  You can only charge extra for things that are unique....  ???

Hi Jerry. First off, I did not recommend his 113 engine components, the dealer did. I reviewed his options with him before he made his decision on which direction to go. Then I made some recommendations on the crank, camplate, oil pump, and throttle body. My understanding, and Ken might know more (but probably knows less :P ), is a new crank, Timken conversion, SE camplate, new OP, SE everything else top end. Heads, pistons, cylinders, pushrods, lifters, 264 SE cams, etc. If he can pull off a complete 113 build with all new parts, for under 4 grand, it's sounded like the way to go.

The option of a spare 110 for $3500 and a Jims motor in the bike isn't a bad option either. But Ken's got better things to do than store a spare stock 110 for 3500 bucks! ;)
