FLTRSE3 Review in Hot Bike Baggers
« on: August 10, 2009, 03:34:40 PM »

I've just finished reading my October 2009 issue of Hot Bike Baggers and Jeff Holt’s article regarding his comparison between the 09 FLTR and 09 FLTRSE3. I didn't find the article very flattering of our bikes or of their owners; especially when he says, “I equate this bike to the brightly hued “hey look at me” Lamborghinis that are popular with the nouveau rich.  I felt he could have done better but then again perhaps I prejudice.

They have to sell magazines.  They're supposed to review bikes not their riders.  But when they're not very good at what they're supposed to they grasp at what they can.  Or they shill for their advertisers.  Most of the bike rags are written to that level.

Read Jeff Holt's self-aggrandizing editorial in the same edition. This will tell you more about the man who wrote the article.

Oh, and check his math, too. He says something about buying a stock FLTR, dropping in a 110 kit and a few goodies and "pocketing the $15K difference". Not sure how he figures $15K difference when the side-by-side comparison at the end of the article shows only a difference of about $13K between the MSRP for the FLTR and FLTRSE3.

Of course, if I could find a dealer who would put a 110 in a FLTR and sell it to me for $2k below MSRP for the stock bike, I'd be all over that...

I am less and less impressed with Hot Bike Baggers with every issue that shows up in my mailbox. I won't be renewing my subscription. Time to re-up for EasyRider and In The Wind. At least there is a bit of unapologetic tit-tillation in those rags. Plus I met some of the editors in Sturgis. Good guys one and all.

Just my $0.02 worth...

I caught the math thing right off the bat. He is a terrible writer, in my opinion. That chain of magazines had some good people but apparently let them all go. The guy that works there that uses the middle part of his name as his signature really is awful. I wonder how many bikes he has ever ridden, not many based on his observations of new bikes he "tests".

IMO there are very few bike magazines out there that are worth the price of a subscription...

Anyone have any favorites?

I enjoy "Cycle World"...expecially Peter Egan..

I like the AMA magazine....I like "The Enthusiast"....

I used to like "Big Twin" - but it's gone now.  I used to like "Hot Bike" - but it spiraled downhill...

I stopped reading bike rags after, "SuperCycle"; "Voice of the American Biker" went under. Have some old back issues stashed somewhere.
The "new" bike magazines are all biased in one way or another. Probably showing my age by mentioning, "SuperCycle" magazine. Oh well..
Ol' boy in "Baggers" magazine was probably jealous because he didn't have the money to buy one, so he chose to knock the machine instead..

My Panhead was once on the cover of SuperCycle.  1987, I think.  I didn't realize anyone else ever read it.

I read the article, pretty lame like the rest of the magazine. The comment about buying the stock bike and turning into a SERG says it all, the guys a thinker.

No, but last week I had some gray poop on my saddlebag. Damned birds in the walnut tree behind the house.

I think people that add accessories to their bikes see value in SE bikes but if you buy a bike and don't ever add anything you won't get it.On the value side.  Ride safe JDO

Jim, SuperCycle was my all-time favorite magazine. Owned a stock '82 Shovelhead FXS at the time when reading that magazine, and lived in Lancaster County,
South Carolina. My local "Dime Store" used to handle the magazine in their selection rack. "The Good Ol' Days" I guess...Wish I had a bike that they were interested in taking photos of, back in those days.. My bike was still considered pretty new, then..JohnT.

Article was ok.  His math was bad as Rick pointed out.  I cought that right a way.

I had done some of the math to add a 110 to a RG and a few other things I wanted, and then compaired it to a SERG.  I saw laws than 3K savings by the time I was done.  CVO seemed like the better deal

He did have one thing right though.

More than once he said it was more stable and better than a batwing.

Try to remember the important thing about your bike is how you feel about it and how it makes you feel. Who cares what some dip@#$% motorcycle mag writer thinks. He probably rides a moped!
