tach tech question
« on: January 12, 2006, 03:21:25 PM »

ok electrical guys looking for some info.... i have a project in the works that calls for the use of a 2" tach. there arent alot of MC applications here so i'm looking at some tachs from autometer.

e-mail from autometer:

Unfortunately we do not offer a 2-1/16" tach in our Pro-Cycle line.  The
2-1/16" automotive tachs would not work.  The ignition on your Harley
puts out a 1 pulse per revolution signal.  The automotive tach's lowest
setting is 2 pulse per revolution.  This means the tach would read twice
the rpm.

what do you know about products like:

naitram,
My source is not available today, and believe it or not, I can't speak intelligently on this subject! [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]  He'll call tomorrow, if you haven't already resolved the matter.  Later--HUBBARD

Is this something your considering for the new fairing project?  If so you would have one other option.  Use the Harley offered speedo/tach combination in the dash (nice looking instrument too) and other engine or electrical instruments in the fairing.

If you know anyone who has a digital tach, you might want to go take it for ride.  I didn't think I'd like the change after watching the needle all these years, but I really enjoyed the one I installed on an Ironhorse last year.  Not near as much need to focus on the tach when you're ripping thru the gears and should be watching the road (or the radar detector).

i had thought about that as well, my thought was to put tach and oil pressure in the fairing. this would also get rid of the mechanical oil pressure hanging off the cylinder head

Application helps to flesh it out a bit.  I had that speedo/tach combination in my last Road King.  Really was a handsome piece and had the benefit of being a direct bolt in.  Generally speaking the more information you've got the better off you are.  So if they were combined in the dash you could do oil pressure and and a voltmeter.  It sucks when your first indication of a charging problem is a dim headlight.

Anyway.....  there will be tons if ideas or possibilities.  Figure out what you like best and go for it.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Found this on the J&P site:

http://www.jpcycles.com/productgroup.aspx?GID=1CAB5112-CFF5-4BE8-8875-9A30DA379961&search=dash&store=Harley&page=10

Its a 2-1/16" VDO in case the link is FUBAR

should fit the bill.

Naitram,

I am not sure on the size, but what about the tach that comes stock on the police road kings.   Its a 3 wire hookup ... pink, orange, black simple to setup and works like a charm for me.   On the roadking it mounts on top of the handlebars, but should be easily reattached with another mount.
