Divisibility Rules for 4 and 8

**Divisible** means that a number can be split equally by another number.Ā

So far youāve learned divisibility rules for 2, 5 and 10 , and divisibility rules for 3, 6, 9.Ā

Now, letās learn divisibility rules for 4 and 8!

Do you remember the multiples of 4? š¤

Thatās it:

4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 48, ...

When a number is divisible by 4, the last two digits are divisible by 4!

So, itās important to learn these 2-digit multiples of 4:

12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 48

And these, too:

52, 56, 60, 64, 68, 72, 76, 80, 84, 88, 92, 96

**Tip:** If you can't remember if one of these big 2-digit numbers š is divisible by 4, just subtract 40 from it, and see if the difference is divisible by 4.

So is 44 divisible by 4?

If you can't remember, subtract 40 from 44:

44 - 40 = 4.

Is 4 divisible by 4? Yes! So 44 is divisible by 4 too!

Now, we know all the 2-digit numbers above are divisible by 4.

Letās try this out!

Is 4,388 divisible by 4?

Letās look at the last two digits!

4,388

88 is divisible by 4! š

That means 4,388 is divisible by 4.

Letās try another one:

Is 45,061 divisible by 4?

Take a look at the last two digits:

45,061

Is 61 divisible by 4?

No! ā

That means 45,061 is not divisible by 4.

Letās learn about 8 next.Ā

To decide if a number is divisible by 8, weāre going to look at the last 3 digits!

For these, you might need to do a little long division.

Letās try it out!

Is 4,200 divisible by 8?

Letās see if we can divide the last three digits by 8 evenly!

We canāt divide 2 by 8, so we move to 20 divided by 8.Ā

Now, we can divide 40 by 8.

Since, we have no remainder, we know that **4,200 is divisible by 8**!

Letās try another one! š

Is 7,246 divisible by 8?

Letās set up a division problem with the last three digits:

We canāt divide 8 into 2, so we divide into 24:

Now, can we divide 6 by 8? š¤

No! So, we write 0 and find our remainder:

Since 8 doesnāt divide evenly into 246, we know that 7,246 is **not divisible by 8**.

Great job! šŖ Now, you know how to figure if numbers are divisible by 4 and 8!

š¤ Now, you can move on to the practice problems!
