State police tonight are crediting two unidentified witnesses for holding an unlicensed drunken driver who tried to flee this morning after he ran into a motorcyclist, a school bus carrying children and a utility pole in Sussex County.
“The actions of the two witnesses were commendable,” Master Cpl. Gary E. Fournier said tonight, “and without their assistance, this suspect may have eluded capture.”
Motorcyclist Thomas Pavlic, 48, of Milton, was admitted to Beebe Medical Center in serious condition after the 6:50 a.m. crash on eastbound Cave Neck Road, east of Diamond Farm Road near Milton, Fournier said.
Pavlic, who was wearing a helmet, suffered multiple serious injuries, he said, but they are not believed to be life-threatening.
Pavlic was slowing to stop behind the Milton Middle School bus – carrying three boys ages 7 through 10 – as it stopped with red lights flashing and its stop sign extended to pick up more students, Fournier said.
But a car behind Pavlic, driven by Marcos D. Perez-Matias, 19, also of Milton, failed to slow down, he said.
Perez-Matias – drunk, unlicensed and talking on a cellphone at the time of the crash – first hit Pavlic, who was thrown across the roadway, and then crashed into the school bus before caroming off the road and into a utility pole, he said.
Perez-Matias then tried to run away, Fournier said.
That was when the two witnesses grabbed him and held him until state troopers arrived, he said.
Cape Henlopen School District bus driver Bonnie E. Mills, 67, of Lincoln, and her passengers were not injured, he said. Perez-Matias had minor injuries but refused medical attention at the scene, he added.
Perez-Matias was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, first-degree vehicular assault, driving without a license, passing a stopped school bus, leaving the scene of a personal injury crash and operating a vehicle while using a cellphone.
Lacking $4,201 cash bail, Perez-Matias was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution near Georgetown, Fournier said tonight.
