« on: September 14, 2014, 10:58:55 AM »

Hey Now, gotta buy new tires and while yall are sitting around today maybe you could give me some input.
My second set was replaced under recall, so now its time for me to buy them.
I cant find the rear in the dunlop elite size 180/55b/18  any sugestions on what to do?

                                                                                        Thanks

The subject has been discussed many times since 2009, and unfortunately the situation hasn't changed in the intervening five years.  There is no legitimate replacement for that 18" rear tire other than the stock Harley branded Dunlop.  You can get the front tire in the Elite series, but not the rear.  Feel free to search for other brands, but the only thing you will find are a few radial tires designed for lighter weight sport bikes.  They don't have a high enough load range to meet minimum specifications for your bike.

You'll also find only HD dealers can sell them (referring to the Dunlops). The best you can do on price is order from a discount dealer like Surdyke HD.  Until Sept 17th at 3am, Surdyke is having free shipping on orders under 20 lbs (you may have to order the tires on two separate orders to qualify).  $170 for the front, $237 for the rear, and no tax.  Retail price is $212 for front, $296 for rear.

FYI...Latus HD has the Dunlops a little cheaper than Surdyke.

Load rating is a problem on the others as well.

Nope.  The load rating of the stock tire for the bike in question is 80 or 81, and the V-Rod tire is 74.

at one time there was a class action going that the stock rear tires had too light a load rating...

soooooo.... they changed the rear wheel and made tires that do have a high enough load rating, it appears the idea was to prevent folks from using the too light tires as cheaper replacements...

Not really.  If a customer installs a tire that doesn't meet the minimum safety requirements like speed and load ratings, Harley would have no liability whatsoever.  The same would apply to Chevy if some nimrod installed rims and tires that didn't meet the minimums for that vehicle.  The manufacturer cannot be held liable for actions by others that do not comply with their minimum specs.

Harley has just chosen rim and tire sizes that are unique so they could corner the market on replacement parts, plain and simple.  There were plenty of rims and tires they could have used, but they chose instead to create new unique sizes that no one else uses, and then arranged to have Dunlop make an exclusive Harley branded tire to fit the oddball rim size.  They started with the CVO's, and now that they've gotten away with it for many years it appears they want to try expanding that anticompetitive arrangement to some standard models.  Make no mistake, it's all about making big bucks selling replacement parts.

Check the New Model Drivel they put out for 2014 that basically states you must use only the brand and size of tires that comes from the factory.  It's pure BS, very similar to all the BS they put out for decades trying to convince people they had to use genuine H-D parts to maintain warranty coverage.  Federal law states quite clearly that isn't the case, but that didn't and doesn't keep Harley from trying to BS customers.

I asked Michelin (at Biketoberfest) about tires for the '09s, "The 19 fronts are coming soon, haven't heard anything about the 18s, either front or rear..."

He said that Michelin uses registration info as the deciding factor whether or not to produce a tire.

I doubt if there are enough SE tourers for a company to make a tire that will only fit a limited production bike.

Dunlop already has the 130/70B18 in the American Elite series.  It's Dunlop part number 31AE78.
